Avatar m tn Blood testing is important, so if you are concerned about the side effects, get the vet to do a blood test to assess dosage levels. But, the side effects CAN continue for several weeks, before they will eventually start to subside. I know it's a hard process - but it has to be gone through - otherwise you will be back at square one. Don't interfere with the dosing without the vet's authority - and importantly, give the dose at the same time every 12hrs.
Avatar m tn Zonisamide is totally unrelated to any of the other anticonvulsants, but, like Keppra, the full extent of its side effects is not yet known so to some vets, it is somewhat controversial to prescribe it. Dilantin, Valium, potassium bromide and felbamate, along with phenobarbital, are all tried and true when it comes to treating idiopathic epilepsy.
Avatar n tn I was worried because he usually bounced back right away from his seizures. I called the vet and they said it was side effects from the seizure and pb, they said he would be back to normal in 2-7 days. I was really skeptical because he was acting so strange but I was still patient with him. Next day he would not stop whining and pacing the house. Second day he woke up much better he remembered a few more stuff but not completely back to normal about 70%.

1577473 tn?1296177286 Hello, I am a 21 year old college student and I have had the occasional migraine all my life. In September I started getting migraines more frequently. I had a really nasty one that forced me to go to a walk in clinic for some immediate care. I got a shot of Torridol that didn't work and a prescription for 100 mg Imitrex. The Imitrex didn't even touch the migraine and I wasn't happy with the side effects.
Avatar f tn I have been seeing a regular neurologist to see if she can treat my migraines and am currently on 150 mg. of Zonisamide every night to try to help that, but I am also working with Dr. Gardner at UPMC, who is a Chiari specialist. He believes it is best to eliminate all other possibilities before actually resorting to surgery to treat the Chiari, which I respect. I go back for a 6 month follow-up MRI and consult with Dr. Gardner next week.

Avatar f tn Even safe drugs can have potential side effects. You must weigh these side effects against the benefit of controlling seizures. In short, this is a common practice to combine all of these drugs and they are not "unsafe" combinations in theory. Hope this helps!

Avatar n tn Yes, I've been reading about them. Unfortunately there is always a down side with side effects isn't there! And as I've just returned to university for the umpteenth time, I can't afford to lose cognitive function. Already I can feel that the Reductil is interfering with my gray matter! Have just come back from having a 2 hour glucose tolerance test and that was really awful too! Oh for a magic wand!
15422595 tn?1440452745 She was initially put on Zonisamide but after 2 weeks, she had a couple more seizures. At that point the docs added Phenobarbital. We've had her blood tested and the PB is at the proper levels in her system. The good news is she's not had any seizures since then... the not so good news is that she's still not adapted well to the meds after 7 weeks.
Avatar f tn ve recently went to the neurologist and they want to put me on zonisamide. But some of the side effects are kind of freaky from what I've read. I guess I'll see what happens. Hope you find something that helps. But I just wanted to let you know that your not alone in this there are blogs with lots of people with this problem. They call it Visual Snow check out some blogs and good luck.
Avatar f tn Hi I really feel sorry for your daughter. How does she survive with all that medication coursing through her body? I got my keppra dose up to 2000mg a day and I couldn't handle the side effects. With the valproic acid, I was taking 1400mg a day before it became toxic for my body. Side effects of anti-epileptics really are not cool. Anyways, to answer your question. I'm no doctor, this is all just info that I've come across in my search for answers.
20840438 tn?1530997576 I have a German Shepherd that suffers from seizures, he has idiopathic epilepsy. He takes 300g of Zonisamide twice a day, personally phenobarbital causes those side effects as well to my dog. He forgot his name, forgot house manners like not eating from the trash, he didn't recognize my parents and he also hated to be petted. As soon as the phenobarbital was out of his system (which took him about 3 days) he went completely back to normal.
3248373 tn?1346981993 try zonisamide slowly go up to 300 mg have your doctor try you on that it worked for mine, Topomax just made me anger and paranode
Avatar f tn Hi There. I know what you are going through. My dog (12 year old Beagle) started having seizures in Jun 2014. My dog went through about the same thing your dog is going through. Apparently, my dog is very sensitive to PB. Have tried several dosages on her & she does ok with a very, very low dose but the seizures come back in 2-3 wks. Right now she is taking 1/2 tab in a.m., 1/2 tab in p.m and every other evening she takes 1 full tab (this is 16.2 mg).
Avatar m tn I will do that it seems the higher dose has created this and I'm not on anything else.
Avatar f tn Many AD's have side effects that affect the libido, guess it applies to both sex es. As far as I know all AD's have this drastic effect . Hopefully you'll find one that's OK for you . Good luck.
