Zonisamide is totally unrelated to any of the other anticonvulsants, but, like Keppra, the full extent of its side effects is not yet known so to some vets, it is somewhat controversial to prescribe it. Dilantin, Valium, potassium bromide and felbamate, along with phenobarbital, are all tried and true when it comes to treating idiopathic epilepsy.
I have a 1 year 4 month old German Shepherd named Melo who's been having seizures since he was 1. I just wanted to share my experience because I know its comforting to hear stories of other people that are going through what you're going through, makes you feel less hopeless. Melo had 4 seizures in the span of 2 hours, he's taking 300mg of Zonisamide every 12 hours but before take refill arrived he had ran out and that's when the seizures happened.
I kind of doubt it's the cerenia causing the drooling. It's more likely the stress that's causing it - a normal reaction in dogs to any kind of stress. While the cerenia can help with nausea and vomiting from motion sickness, it can't help with the mental end of it. Frequent breaks - like every 30 or 45 minutes on a long trip - can also help set the mental reset button.
The good news is that most dogs who experience motion sickness as pups tend to outgrow it with practice.
My German Shepherd was recently prescribed incurin and it has caused her not to eat and a little bit aggressive and scared... She also was running around with her hackles up and starting fights with my other dogs...She only had 3 or 4 days of it and then I took her off of it this last Sunday was her last dose...She still is not wanting to eat and not 100% back to herself? How long do the side effects last...It was taking me an hour and a half to get her to eat 2 cups of food...
of effexor and i couldnt sleep at nite so my doctor started me on 25 mg. of zonisamide and took me off effexor.I am having horrible side effects but dont know which med. is causing it.I have been crying in the mornings,having a constant stomach ache and my head feels very confused almost to the point of disillusion. Which med. is causing this?Should my doctor have me on antiseisure meds for depression?

she does ok with a very, very low dose but the seizures come back in 2-3 wks. Right now she is taking 1/2 tab in a.m., 1/2 tab in p.m and every other evening she takes 1 full tab (this is 16.2 mg). My vet just yesterday put her on Zonisamide 100mg twice a day. He's hoping she does well on this & can eventually take her off the PB. It will take a few days for the PB to get out of your dogs system so hopefully you will see improvement in her soon. Has your vet put her on Prednisone?
Some of the side effects reported vary due to different breeds & several other factors. We have 1 Rottweiler mix male & 2 rescued dogs (German Rottweiler female & American Rottweiler female). German Rotty was approx 2 y/o when rescued. She had her first seizure approx 2 months ago. Scared me to death. A month later she had another so I knew some of the signs before hand. My mixed male & American Rotty female were going crazy when the seizures occurred.
If this is a small dog and 3ml is a human dose, then yes, it could be harmful.....A large dog would be less likely to suffer as serious side effects.......
The same overdose symptoms can happen to a dog as with a human.......You need to look at your package warning label and read them or google side effects of this medication......
If you see anything unusual with your dog's behaviour, you need to seek medical attention ASAP.....Let us know how he/she is doing.....
Hi there, I looked on the side effects of Depakote and I didn't find anything to do with this. I've never been an angry person, nor have I really ever have I ever blasted people or my dogs. I yell at my dogs, have no patience, basically more irritability that I'm not able to control .I'm Bipolar,with mixed states, rapid cycling and have been in the last couple of months, hypomanic.
I have been seeing a regular neurologist to see if she can treat my migraines and am currently on 150 mg. of Zonisamide every night to try to help that, but I am also working with Dr. Gardner at UPMC, who is a Chiari specialist. He believes it is best to eliminate all other possibilities before actually resorting to surgery to treat the Chiari, which I respect. I go back for a 6 month follow-up MRI and consult with Dr. Gardner next week.

In 1998, needed to stop taking Buspar because the sound of dogs barking was driving me bonkers. I would bang on the window trying to stop the neibores dog until breaking the glass. The anxiety and depression I had and was trying to aleviate from a devorce was being linked to dogs barking and the sound of people eating. I started to then and still to this day wear paper earplugs and head phones night and day with volume blaring to block out what should be normal sounds.

My sleep is not disturbed -- I sleep normal as usual. I've also noticed, and have in the past, that I have some twitches. Various muscles in my body will twitch from time to time.
I hate to give her so many meds but I rather see her comfortable each day than not to be able to move - she is 11 and hope she lives a long time - I say this cause people say Rimydal cause side effects but that is after many years and I want her to live out her old age as comfortable as she can!! But as far as the trilostane no side effects so far! And she is down to drinking only 1 bowl or so of water a day and her appetite is normal - so the meds are doing their job.
