I have been seeing a regular neurologist to see if she can treat my migraines and am currently on 150 mg. of Zonisamide every night to try to help that, but I am also working with Dr. Gardner at UPMC, who is a Chiari specialist. He believes it is best to eliminate all other possibilities before actually resorting to surgery to treat the Chiari, which I respect. I go back for a 6 month follow-up MRI and consult with Dr. Gardner next week.
Hi There. I know what you are going through. My dog (12 year old Beagle) started having seizures in Jun 2014. My dog went through about the same thing your dog is going through. Apparently, my dog is very sensitive to PB. Have tried several dosages on her & she does ok with a very, very low dose but the seizures come back in 2-3 wks. Right now she is taking 1/2 tab in a.m., 1/2 tab in p.m and every other evening she takes 1 full tab (this is 16.2 mg).
I have a 1 year 4 month old German Shepherd named Melo who's been having seizures since he was 1. I just wanted to share my experience because I know its comforting to hear stories of other people that are going through what you're going through, makes you feel less hopeless. Melo had 4 seizures in the span of 2 hours, he's taking 300mg of Zonisamide every 12 hours but before take refill arrived he had ran out and that's when the seizures happened.
t find a workable dosage of phenobartibal, you might want to ask your vet about either Dilantin, Valium, potassium bromide, felbamate, or a different type of anti-seizure medicine that can be used in conjunction with potassium bromide and/or phenobarbital together called Zonisamide. Zonisamide is totally unrelated to any of the other anticonvulsants, but, like Keppra, the full extent of its side effects is not yet known so to some vets, it is somewhat controversial to prescribe it.
The vet did bloodwork and put her on zonisamide 100mg twice a day. She continued having them so vet doubled her dosage to 200 mg twice daily. She continued having them but they were much shorter in duration. So the vet added phenobarbital 1g twice daily in addition to her zonisamide 200mg twice daily. My question is about the side effects. It has been a week since the pheno was added and she is still very clumsy and can't even walk up stairs.
I developed tremors in hands and jaw, over a period of 6 months saw a movement disorder specialist had a DAT scan and an MRI both were normal, but. I wonder if I was tested too early, and wonder if Parkinson's will develop at a later time. I just can't get the thought of Parkinson's out of my head.

The first possibility that needs to be considered is Parkinson's disease. She may also get hand tremors. Let me know if you observe any hand tremors.
Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the basal ganglia, situated deep in the brain. The basal ganglia are concerned with smooth movements of the body. A dysfunction in the basal ganglia, as seen in Parkinson's disease, leads to the tremors.
Does she have any other symptoms?

Diagnosis Parkinson's in a someone in their 30's would generally be classed as early onset Parkinson's and because of the rarity of Parkinson's for that age group, misdiagnoses would definitely be a possibility. I've actually read statistics that put the misdiagnosis rate as high as 1 in 5 in general for Parkinson's.
I went to see a N/S this past week and he said he thinks my problem may be that I have Parkinson's disease. He said my symptoms don't seem to be chiari related. He put me on medicine for Parkinson's. Has anyone else been told they had Parkinson's ? Now I have to go see a neurologist next month.Boy I tell it gets better all the time. I'm getting tired of seeing doctors. This will be number 4.
of effexor and i couldnt sleep at nite so my doctor started me on 25 mg. of zonisamide and took me off effexor.I am having horrible side effects but dont know which med. is causing it.I have been crying in the mornings,having a constant stomach ache and my head feels very confused almost to the point of disillusion. Which med. is causing this?Should my doctor have me on antiseisure meds for depression?
I am really scared.I need to know what my chances are when it comes to Parkinson's Disease. My grandmother's sister had it and my Rheumy found a tremor in my upper body that is more severe on my right side. I also have muscle spasms in my legs. I have had pins and needles sensations in my hands and other symptoms, however since my mother told me this information about Parkinson's, I have become really anxious about the whole thing. Can someone please help??

Head trauma can cause and exacerbate Parkinson's disease. You do not have to hit your head on an object (steering wheel, windshield) to injure the brain. Even at moderate rates of speed, traumatic brain injuries can and do occur. Three separate processes work to injure the brain: bruising (bleeding), tearing, and swelling.

Short term memory loss seems to follow me as well. They have me on Zonisamide, Pravachol, Lisinopril, Ambien prn, Naproxen, and Soma for muscle spasms. Oh also Adderall XR 10 for idiopathic hypersomnolence. Just reading a bit oabout parkinsons and became concerned. I am 39 years of age, migraines being my main medical history though the musculoskeletal pain has become overwhelming at times. I'm still functioning, working 40 hrs.
As a long-term user of clonazepam I was curious about this, and did a quick web search. Found no information whatsoever indicating it causes Parkinson's, but there is information that people who take it get or have Parkinson's -- but this list from the FDA pretty much indicates a ton of meds are taken by people who get Parkinson's.
I suffer from anxiety and depression. My husband has Parkinson's. How can I handle his choices of driving or doing dangerous work? I can't control all his actions. He is an extremely stubborn person. To what degree am I responsible for what he chooses to do? With my health, I can't go on with this overwhelming feeling of responsibility to control his choices!! is someone's habit learning ability affected by parkinson's disease? I think the comment in this link is saying that it was affected initially but they were still able to learn habits despite having Parkinson's; is that right?
