15422595 tn?1440452745 Hello and thanks in advance for any thoughts. Our 5 y.o. Basset/Beagle mix was officially pegged with epilepsy about 2 months ago after she started having multiple seizures in a day. She was initially put on Zonisamide but after 2 weeks, she had a couple more seizures. At that point the docs added Phenobarbital. We've had her blood tested and the PB is at the proper levels in her system. The good news is she's not had any seizures since then...
Avatar m tn Blood testing is important, so if you are concerned about the side effects, get the vet to do a blood test to assess dosage levels. But, the side effects CAN continue for several weeks, before they will eventually start to subside. I know it's a hard process - but it has to be gone through - otherwise you will be back at square one. Don't interfere with the dosing without the vet's authority - and importantly, give the dose at the same time every 12hrs.
Avatar f tn Maybe I am going through withdrawal symptoms too from Effexor too. I was on Effexor and Lyrica. Effexor for depression but also for neuropathy pain in my fee also. It seemed the Lyrica and Effexor combined worked for the pain, I went to a neurologist and he took me off the Lyrica, which made me gain 60lbs! lol... and put me on Zonisamide. It has been great for my pain. But now that aI have been on it awhile I am feeling sick to my stomach every morning and my head feels fuzzy.
Avatar m tn t find a workable dosage of phenobartibal, you might want to ask your vet about either Dilantin, Valium, potassium bromide, felbamate, or a different type of anti-seizure medicine that can be used in conjunction with potassium bromide and/or phenobarbital together called Zonisamide. Zonisamide is totally unrelated to any of the other anticonvulsants, but, like Keppra, the full extent of its side effects is not yet known so to some vets, it is somewhat controversial to prescribe it.
Avatar f tn s been on 1 1/2 grain on Pheno in the AM and PM but he continues to have cluster seizures once a month. His latest blood test was 26 for pheno. We increased his pheno to the current does previously stated about 1 month ago. Over the weekend, he had cluster seizures. We didn't take him to the vet immediately since the other times, we've given him 1 gr of pheno after and within a day, he gets better. This time his seizures were at night at least 3-4 times.
Avatar f tn I have been seeing a regular neurologist to see if she can treat my migraines and am currently on 150 mg. of Zonisamide every night to try to help that, but I am also working with Dr. Gardner at UPMC, who is a Chiari specialist. He believes it is best to eliminate all other possibilities before actually resorting to surgery to treat the Chiari, which I respect. I go back for a 6 month follow-up MRI and consult with Dr. Gardner next week.
Avatar f tn To find out, you have to do a glucose tolerance test or something to see whether your blood sugar levels are in fact messed up. Raising blood sugar is easy -- eat simple carbs. Remember, Type 2 diabetes is high blood sugar; hypoglycemia is the name for the disorder involving low blood sugar. A lot of natural supplements can lower blood sugar, and biotin might be one of them, but I'm just not sure.
1402028 tn?1280858335 s have been performed. The seizure medication I was on was called Zonisamide...and it made all of my symptoms worse. I was taken off of that and put on Amitripylene, which I am currently on. It doesn't seem to be doing a whole lot but the doctor wants me to try it for 3 months and I am on month 2. My sleep pattern is messed up badly now as well; I don't know if it is from the medicines, or just lack of exercise since I'm stuck indoors so much now. Thank you for the help.
Avatar n tn I have a 1 year 4 month old German Shepherd named Melo who's been having seizures since he was 1. I just wanted to share my experience because I know its comforting to hear stories of other people that are going through what you're going through, makes you feel less hopeless. Melo had 4 seizures in the span of 2 hours, he's taking 300mg of Zonisamide every 12 hours but before take refill arrived he had ran out and that's when the seizures happened.
979826 tn?1389036358 has anyone heard of Zonisamide? i will go on this drug once i come off topamax I've been on topamax forever!
Avatar f tn Hello there, You can try melatonin which can be bought from a food supplement store. Melatonin is basically the ''sleep hormone'' it it produced naturally from the pineal gland in your brain and light and darkness have the most influence on it's production. More light, less melatonin, dark = more melatonin produced to induce sleep. It also have powerful antioxidant effect, boost your immune system and can prevent ischemic damages.
1577473 tn?1296177286 in my area to be seen by a neurologist. I saw the doctor for the first appt and she put me on Zonisamide as a migraine preventative and Maxalt-MLT 10 mg as a rescue medication as well as ordering some labs, an MRI and an MRA. All tests came back normal. The Maxalt worked well when I got the migraines but insurance wasn't too happy with it so we had to switch. She then put me on Relpax which didn't work at all.
20840438 tn?1530997576 I have a German Shepherd that suffers from seizures, he has idiopathic epilepsy. He takes 300g of Zonisamide twice a day, personally phenobarbital causes those side effects as well to my dog. He forgot his name, forgot house manners like not eating from the trash, he didn't recognize my parents and he also hated to be petted. As soon as the phenobarbital was out of his system (which took him about 3 days) he went completely back to normal.
917763 tn?1311628896 General speaking how low do you blood levels have to drop before they consider either reducing tx or putting you on a rescue drug?

3248373 tn?1346981993 try zonisamide slowly go up to 300 mg have your doctor try you on that it worked for mine, Topomax just made me anger and paranode
Avatar n tn It's time for your vet to do some more investigative work. It was reasonable to suspect a drug interaction, but that apparently isn't the problem. It's time to do some imaging studies like x-ray or an MRI to see what, if anything, is happening in the brain. This is particularly important given your information about his recent fall. Your vet may want to look into possible problems in other areas of the body as well, so expect some blood and urine work.
Avatar f tn ve had several medications from Topomax to Lyrica with no relief and am currently taking Zonisamide daily (9 weeks) with Naproxin and Imatrex as needed. I graph my headaches daily and average a 5 on a 0 - 10 scale, no changes noted with Zonisamide treatment. No days are 0. I avoid taking any OTC medications and use the Naproxin and Imatrex very sparingly. An MRI a year ago showed bulging but it was discounted as unimportant by my neurologist.

Avatar f tn Keppra (levetiracetam) is mostly excreted by the kidneys are is one of the safest drugs speaking in terms of therapeutic vs. toxic blood concentrations. Other drugs include zonisamide, potassium bromide, etc. A large percentage of dogs respond to one anti-seizure medication. For some, one is not enough and they need 2, 3, or 4 others! (I have seen it). It is not excessive to have more than one drug. Each drug works on a different receptor in the brain.
