Hi, fast heart rate is due to Xopenex. Initially, use of this drug is associated with this side effect but over a period of time, tolerance usually develops. In case if you have a pre exisiting heart disease, please avoid this drug.
Consult you treating doctor to lower the dose or frequency, other alternative is sustained release deriphylline tablets.
Without coughing, the lungs would fill up with mucous and that is more dangerous as it blocks the airways and sets up the lungs for secondary infections. For most asthmatics night time is when it tends to flare up more. That is why he is coughing more at night. It will take a few days for the steroid to kick in. Just keep up with his treatments and keep an eye on his symptoms. Especially for sever shortness of breath.
Your daughter is pretty sick in my book. I am not a doctor...but I was a nurse. I hope that you decided to take her to be evaluated in the ER...her oxygenation is a bit too low to just watch at home without equipment to monitor her. If you are still home, push for an admission or at least a thorough examination complete with an xray and lab work.
You aren't over reacting, you are being a mom! Always go with your gut, don't take no for an answer as far as doctors go.
My son had been diagnosed with pneumonia 4 times in the past four months, as well as bronchiolitis in between. He has been treated with Rocephin, Azithromycin, and Amoxil. He has breathing treatments 4 times a day (pulmicort & xopenex) has had 2 episodes of cyanosis, and been hospitalized for low oxygen satuation, wheezing etc. His pediatrician tells me I shouldn't panic and that he has asthma. He is only 13 mos old!
Thanks for the responses. I have been taking omeprazole for several years for GERD but still have heartburn once in a while, so that is worth considering. Small airway obstruction makes sense because I can take big, deep breaths with little extra effort but still feel like I am short of breath. Is there a better maintenance med than Advair and/or rescue med than Xopenex from small airway asthma? Are supplementing these meds with loratadine and guaifenesin an option?
You can do children or infant Tylenol. Just a lil tho. And a temp that's to high for a infant is 101. Try giving him a cool warm bath to cool him off if the temp is to high.
Usually the indoor pollution is much worse than outdoor, try opening up your window for 10 min a day to get fresh air in, using mite covers on pillows and bedding, buy a hepa vaccume cleaner and use it once a week (at least, also dust once a week with a damp cloth). I wear a face mask when I clean so I don't irritate my lungs. Try changing your sheets once a week.
In addition to all of this I would see your doctor again to ask about a long term inhaler.
s run a low grade temp for 13 days running, has taken codituss cough med (with codiend), breathing treatments with Xopenex, and has finished a round of Z-pack. Coughing is horrible at bedtime and through the night. Since she has a low grade temp I had disregarded an allergy. 13 days into this, I'm re-thinking everything. I'm looking for help. Is this a virus or allergy or what? She can sit in a room 6 ft from the guinea pigs and not cough at all.
However, my son has been on other medications for sinisitis and bronchitis that could account for a headache. He now off of pulmicort, xopenex and nasonex. He is currently going through allergy testing as well. It is very difficult for me to try to determine the cause of the headache with so much going on with him. He is feeling completely better aside from this headache.
