Why is levemir given

Common Questions and Answers about Why is levemir given

levemir

Avatar n tn Levemir takes effect in 3 - 6 hours, peaks in 6 - 15 hours, and is gone within 18 - 24 hours. It is possible your Levemir dose is gone before you expect it to be, which is why your scores are now higher in the morning. Consult your endocrinologist about possibly changing the time that you take the Levemir, as that could change your scores.
Avatar n tn Hi, If this low dose of lantus twice daily is working for you without any problems, there is no reason to change it. Lantus is written as once daily but many doctors(including myself) and patients split the dose because even though it is supposed to be "peakless", it is not for some people. At low doses it works especially well as a split dose. Levemir can be used instead, and is more commonly written as twice daily.
Avatar n tn The Levemir is NOT on a sliding scale. It is a given does once a day Or twice a day. 12 hours apart. is his 224 after eating or first thing in the morning before food or drink?
Avatar n tn It is not hypo value, why sugar bounces up, why feel shaky, fear etc. I use LEVIMIR as base insulin. Why body is obstructing sugar to low, and why it gives hypo feeling. Can any body me the reason and how to overcome this situation? My sugar is going high now.
Avatar f tn I see the confusion If I understand you, you think Levemir is used for carbohydrates. Levemir is a basle insulin, meaning it works for 24 hours. Like a background insulin. the amount of Levemir taken has nothing to do with the amount of carbohydrates (carbs) you eat. That type of insulin is called a bolis insulin, like Apedra, Novalog... that insulin is taken according to how many carbs are eating and YOUR particular carb to insulin ratio.
Avatar n tn Carbs provide a surge of BG so a surge of insulin is needed to regulate the BG, that is the function of rapid insulin. Levemir is a Basal insulin provides a long term (24 hour) insulin supply. Levemir is NOT meant to counter BG rise due to food. eating food will raise BG for 2, 3 or 4 hours levemir lasts 24 hours a rapid insulin lasts about 4 hours so it matches the BG result from food.
Avatar n tn m on novolog and levemir (levemir is just at bedtime).
Avatar n tn Thanks ever so much friend for witing back on and about my problems with opticlik as this auto pen seems to brake down every chance, I have had two of the instruments now and they just do not work right and been told by support that I should dial up the dosage very slow and I do and that doesn't and didn't help at all and it would still jam up on dosage knob so I now have the levemir lfex pen which is so similar to the novo log flex pen except the colors of both pens are different so yo
Avatar m tn Clay, It would be difficult for me to tell based upon the little information you have given. Also, you mentioned that you are taking 500 units of Insulin. That tells me that you either have made an error in your dosing or you are really not a Diabetic. No one takes 500units of Insulin in one dose. I am a considered a brittle Diabetic and I only use about 300 units every 3-4 days. Maybe that's why you are out of breath, lol. You would actually die if you took that much Insulin at once.
1353681 tn?1387083733 Hi, I have not used lantus, but I do use levemir. Both are medium acting basal insulins. Levemir works best injected twice a day. I inject just before going to bed (22 units), and when I wake up in the morning (8 units). As you can see, I don't use the same dose morning and evening, as I find I need more basal insulin at night when I am inactive, than during the day when I am active. You will need to adjust your dosage based on your target blood sugar levels.
Avatar m tn Hi, Scalp, thank you for the catch. Yes, I meant less, not more. Duration of action is different for different insulins. We have rapid acting; older insulin Humalin-N has an onset of 15 - 30 minutes compared to the modern insulins such as Aspart (novorapid for me) and Humalog, which have an onset of about 10 - 15 minutes. Moderate acting insulins are the ones we use for basal (background) insulin. Examples are Humalin-R (older insulin), levemir, lantus etc.
Avatar f tn My husband is insulin dependant and has been as high as 800 before and walks around like nothing is wrong.. Dr's are always amazed.... Try taking Cinnamon capsules. Cinnamon is a natural way to lower blood sugars as well as the herb Gymenma. If your feeling that sick, I would go to the ER and let them put you on an insulin drip.
Avatar n tn I have type 2 diabetes (2 yrs). My A1C is 7.6 I am presently using Levemir Flex Pen (22) before bed. I take synthroid for hypothyrodism (10 yrs) and recently started taking crestor for high cholesterol (which is now within normal range) I 58, female and over-weight. Question: I want to start taking 200 mcg of chromium picolinate to help with my diabetes. Is this safe to take with the medications I am currently taking? Also, when is the best time to take it.
Avatar n tn Values of pH simply describe how acidic or how basic a solution is, the closer to 1 the solution is more acidic and the closer to 14 the solution is, the more basic. Your body resides at a neutral pH of 7 and the pH value of Lantus resides at about 4, which explains why it stings when it comes into contact.
Avatar n tn But from what I have read, it seems blood sugar is supposed to go down with allergies. Is this true? If so, is there an explanation for why my blood sugar does the opposite?
Avatar f tn My daughter is 17 and is having trouble with adjusting insulin doses...how much lantus would be a good dose to start with?
1273125 tn?1365077526 Although from what I read about Starlix a main side effect is weight gain. Why did she send me to her nurse practioner and then not trust her opinion? I am currently looking for another doctor. There is a wonderful endocrinologist that I am trying to see but he is not taking new patients at the moment. I have another patient of his trying to get me the hookup. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn "Is there an insulin that doest not cause stomach pain, chills, and vomiting?" Call your local pharmacy and schedule a consultation with the Pharmacist. Also, ask your doctor for a referral to an Endocrinologist, a diabetes specialist, as your current doctor appears to be playing you as a guinea pig; try this and if it doesn't work we'll try something until we find something that works, maybe.
Avatar n tn I dont understand why we are given methodone as a substitute for what ever we are taking when I have read so many articales on people becoming addicted to it , isnt it just swapping one drug for another/??? . Can this be clarified for me as I was also offered it from the Dr .
Avatar m tn I have been taking Victoza for the past year, I am now taking 1.2. Now and then I started getting short of breath. I have regular check ups and Dr's found no reason for me to be short of breath, not thinking anything about Victoza. This has been all me noticing this. I weaned back to 0.6 and after a few days the s.o.b. came back. I have since repeated this going back and forth, a few times. It always returns.
Avatar n tn The modern short acting insulin that is considered safe for pregnancy is Humalog (insulin lispro). The modern long acting insulin that is considered safe for pregnancy is levemir (insulin detemir). You will need to do basal-bolus testing to determine your correct insulin dosages for each type of insulin. You should also look into low carb eating (paleo style), which will help with managing blood sugar as well.
Avatar n tn Thank you for all your advice! I was taking the Lantus at night, usually around 10:00 and while I was basically "normal" before bed, I would either crash, or go high. So I tried the 3am readings and those were even wierd - some were high, some were normal. So, at that point, I had been on Lantus for 2 weeks, my doctor decided that it was not working for me and that I should switch back to NPH. With each meal, and actually any snack I have, I take NovoRapid.
Avatar n tn I would assume that it can cause vision changes because when sugar levels raise and fall in your body they do so in all of your cells - including the cells in your eyes. This is why diabetics should have a glocoma test annually to make sure none of the blood vessels in the eyes are being effected. Sorry I don't know more but please post what you find out here as well so I can learn too.
