After recent cath my doctor changed my medication from vytorin ,have taken vytorin for 5 years, to lovastatin. I did ask for a cheaper medicine and lovastatin was what he came with. I have no problems or side effects . My question is lovastatin less effective then other of the same and if not why is it not used often. My engineering background comes out if I d not have proper data.
Someone suggested that I consider inner imaging screening (EBT Hart scan). I am on Lipitor and Vytorin, I was taken off of Benicar two months ago because of the back pain and an elevated CPK 200's. Recent blood test revealed my cholesterol at 118 but my CPK at 205 and still experiencing lower back back pain. My blood pressure is 110/70 to 120/80. No prior hart problems.
Do you think I should consider this image screening?
That vytorin study was very small, and included a very select type of cholesterol problems. I think it dealt with extremely high levels, like 3 or 4 hundred. My doc says to not pay any attention, until a much larger study is done.
My doctor perscribed Vytorin 10/20. This is where my health began to deteriorate. I developed both clay soft stool and chronic explosive diarrhea in the mornings (3-4X before leaving the house) and excessive tiredness. At first I didnt put the two together, I just thought it was something I was eating or drinking so I continuously changed my diet. Nothing helped. I went back to the doctor for a 1 yr follow up and mentioned the diarrhea.
The earlier mentioned side effect caused by the group of medications known as the statins, which Vytorin (ezetimibe/simvastatin) is a member of, is called rhabdomyolysis. This condition is breakdown of the muscle and has been associated with the statins as a class as a rare but serious side effect. Rhabdomyolysis caused by statins is reversible once the medication has been discontinued.
, 165 lbs, eat well (no red meat or pork, little dairy, etc), and active. My chol is excellent all around (thanks to 10mg of vytorin). Total chol was 215 before, 135 after. My dad had a heart attack at 49, second at 73, he is now 82.
I went for stress test and echo last week. Dr said stress was great but he saw a very small calcium deposit on lining of heart muscle, not near arteries. He was not overly concerned and said we just need to watch it during next year's test.
The only FDA approved drug that has had clinical trails is Crestor. It is a statin drug so you have to watch for muscle pain , fatigue with it. If you get any tell you doctor right away. Have they done a full lipid panel on you too? Diet only lowers your cholesterol by about 10%. So, it helps to not eat any extra cholestrol as your liver is what genetically controls the amount of receptors you are born with that break down cholesterol.
I am currently on my 4th statin med since last fall to lower my LDL. I have had some intense muscle and joint pain in the past, which is why my doctor has been changing my statin type and dosage. We're trying to find the right combo. I have a history of CAD and PAD, have had a femoral stent, and am a smoker.(59 yo male, btw).
Does anyone know if I can substitute 20 mg Lipitor for my 20 mg Simvastatin, which I just ran out of?

The grapefruit caution is on there because it can lower your blood pressure to a dangerous level. I hope that you have a blood pressure cuff and measure your BP daily. If you see any drop as a result of eating your 1/2 grapefruit, stop.
My blood tests, BP, etc. are good and it is quite a bit cheaper too. (Although with any drug, if it is what you need then price doesn't / shouldn't matter that much). I'm on a few others too - Vytorin, Plavix, Lisinopril and 81mg asprin.
Early on I also had a problem with Lipitor - it made me itch! Not a good thing when you re trying to get accustomed to blood thinners. After a few weeks they switched me to Vytorin and itching went away.
but these days i have a sevear muscular pain n joint pain in both arm ...is it possible that it related 2 the heart failure?
