Hello, I see is has been a while since your ordeal. Hopefully you've found a sensible solution. While I don't have IBS, I do suffer from chronic constipation from heavy narcotic use for chronic pain. I was just prescribed 24mcg Amitiza and told to take them twice daily, haven't started yet. What I have done in the past is one capful of miralax and 200mg of colace per day. Just recently I learned of something the medical field refers to as the "GI Cocktail".
Having said all of the above there is one difference I noticed with the Amitiza and that is the medication has greatly reduced the syncope episode I was having during a bowl movement which were occurring about once a month.
Since I have been prescribed a Amitiza, which was about six months ago, I only had one syncope incident which by itself is a help to me.

Also take Lactulose and Amitiza. However, in order to take the Amitiza must take a nausea pill before and after. Often times still have nausea with the Amitiza and not convinced it helps all that much. I've been at this for 8 yrs and have done everything but stand on my head. Without pills and powder - bowel movements are difficult and every 3-5 days. And only partial. EXTREMELY bloated. Have difficulty fitting into street clothes later in the day. I had an endoscopy and found out I have a large duodenal ulcer with partial outlet obscrtuction.Can I take Amitiza with this ulcer?I was supposed to have a colonoscopy but I couldn't get completely clear.I was put on a drug to help heal the ulcer and a proton pump inhibitor.I just want to know if it is safe to amitiza.I am on opiods so I need it.
I have these bloated, distention, nausea, constipation (sometimes) for about 20 years. Colonoscopy and gastroenteroscopyn always show clear and fine. I was prescribed Amitiza 8 mg 2 years ago. Yes, Zelnorm was taken off the market but Amitiza is what I was prescibed in place of that. These are just take for short terms as they have really seem to help me in the past.
The test results came back that the pains that I was having at the time before(2006) were consistant with the findings as when this other dr did a colonoscopy, were it showed this and is stated " spasms was noted consistent with irritable bowel syndrone, and internal hemorrhoids were seen.
These symptoms may be associated with Fibro or CFS, but you should really find a neurologist that will be able to properly diagnose you. If you have exhausted all of the Dr's in your area, then go somewhere else... don't let their ignorance be your downfall!

I researched some on the internet and I am concerned that the gastrointestinal issues are from macrocyctic anemia (b-12 or pernicious anemia) from what I can figure from my symptons and blood work. What is the treatment for such? Whom would I see regarding this? What other methods will relieve the constipation? I am very miserable and feel awlful 24/7.
You need to get some major calories in you without all the bulk of food since you become nauseous when you eat. Ensure is available in drug stores. That is what we always gave to patients when they could not eat much. It is high protein.
Have you ever been referred to a dietician in a hospital setting? She / he could give you some ideas on foods that are calorie dense but not overly fulling.
Please find some way to get in nutrition.
I do not have a large intestine, had surgery 13 years ago. at the place small colon is connected i had a CT scan which says i have a stricture and scarring. I am having terrible bloating and cannot eat any large meal, also can't do fiber, gluten or carbs. Any suggestions. I take amitiza twice a day and drink miralax every night with prune juice. this has ruined my life. it has just gotten worse over the last 6 months.
I notice that it feels like I have something that is laying over my anus so that it is being blocked though it is not actually happening. I also know that when this happens the waste is pushing so hard on my perinium(spelling?) that it get little skin tears from the pressure though not actually busting through. There is always tons of blood when this happens and obviously I end up getting horrid hemrrhoids. It usually takes a week to start to recover form this.
