Common Questions and Answers about Warfarin surgery

Avatar m tn The most common anticoagulation drug prescribed after heart valve surgery is warfarin (Coumadin). The newer blood thinners are apixaban and dabigatran, also known as Pradaxa and are expensive. The main concern is that specific antidotes for bleeding are available for warfarin but not yet developed for the new drugs. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn t matter what kind of ablation is done, it is standard practice here to be on 6 weeks of aspirin or warfarin after an ablation. I was on warfarin from a post surgery blood clot so didn't need the aspirin but just continued with my warfarin treatment as usual. Am now off warfarin and have to say the anxiety is killing me...lol my safety blanket has been taken away ....
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with RHD (mitral stenosis) and had mitral valvotomy done in 1988(open heart surgery/splitting open the mitral flaps) when Im 30 as I was planning for a family. I'm 51 yo now and I underwent gastroscopy & colonscopy at a hospital in Mar2010 as I was experiencing food poisoning and abdomenal distension, Results were clear except for a minor ucler in the small intestinal wall. A month later, my legs swelled and I was warded for CCF and atrial fribillation.
Avatar n tn Xarelto is one of the newer blood thinners, but my ep told me there is no antidote to the newer drugs and should you need emergency surgery they could be a problem. With Warfarin you can be given Vitamin K or plasma to reverse the effects. I wonder if trying the brand Coumadin might help you? I know the genericss are supposed to be the same, but sometimes people do better on the original drug. Just a thought. I say definitely discuss it with your doctor.
Avatar m tn You have a lot going on in your body that could make you feel bad, beside taking warfarin, and the warfarin is probably the least likely culprit. The amount of warfarin that any given individual has to take to stay within an INR range of 2.0 to 3.0 (which is probably what the doctors mean when they tell you they want you at 2.5) will vary, depending on how rapidly that person's body can metabolize and excrete the warfarin.
612551 tn?1450022175 The gallbladder surgery is nowadays done laprascopic, only need the full surgery if there are problems. I think that my surgeon said that 99% of gallbladder surgeries are started laproscopically, so that means 1% end up being full surgery. I also had laproscopic surgery and would have been great if I hadn't had a DVT a week later. The injections of heparin have a short life of either 12 hours or 24 hours so it is important to inject at the same time every day.
942410 tn?1274047074 Clearly your question is one for your doctor to answer. In my experience with Warfarin, and I get along well with it, aspirin is much easier to deal with if it is sufficient. I don't know the relationship between having a pacemaker and needing Warfarin. Warfarin is a blood anticoagulant (thinner) as I'm sure you know. It is taken to reduce clot formation caused by something line Atrial Fibrillation or mechanical heart valves.
Avatar m tn t say anything that would explain to me why you are taking Warfarin. I can understand that you would have/want-to go off of Warfarin before knee surgery, but afterwards? Do you suffer from Atrial Fibrillation? Are you on any other medications beside Warfarin?
Avatar f tn I may be wrong, but I think if they can do an angiogram, I think they can insert stents. I'm sure they have taken you off Warfarin. I had to have a major surgery for a bowel obstruction while taking another blood thinner (Plavix) and they were prepared for and dealt with that problem. If I were you, I'd pump the doctor for more information. You have very valid concerns. Keep us informed.
Avatar m tn I have undergone aortic valve replacement surgery in 2003. Until 2 months back I was taking 150mg Ecosprin and 5mg Warfarin daily, then I was diagnosed with Hepatitis E and my INR value increased suddenly, so my doctor cut on the warfarin for few days until it dropped to <1.5 and then I started taking my warfarin again but my INR didn't increase. 2 weeks back my doctor increased my dose from 5 to 6mg but still my INR value is 1.4 and it is not increasing from past 2 months. Please help.
Avatar n tn Do to a leg blood clot I've been taking warfarin (7.5) for three years. I am 62 years old and very active. I weight lift, jog, and ride a bike. Will I have to take warfarin all of my life or at some point can I discontinue it?
233622 tn?1279334905 The clearance of R-warfarin is generally half that of S-warfarin, thus as the volumes of distribution are similar, the half-life of R-warfarin is longer than that of S-warfarin. The half-life of R-warfarin ranges from 37 to 89 hours, while that of S-warfarin ranges from 21 to 43 hours. Studies with radiolabeled drug have demonstrated that up to 92% of the orally administered dose is recov-ered in urine. Very little warfarin is excreted unchanged in urine.
Monster I have been taken off Warfarin, prescribed after surgery. I possess 14 2.5mg tablets. What is the safest way for me to dispose of them?
Avatar m tn Hello, Dermatitis, urticaria, alopecia, rash, bullous eruptions, pruritus, and pallor have been reported infrequently with use of warfarin. If you are having these symptoms after use of warfarin then you can talk to your physician and get dabigatran prescribed as an alternative to warfarin. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar f tn Two years ago I had a stenosis in my small intestine which required surgery to correct.Seven months ago I had a pulmonary embolism and I am told this may have been the second one.I am taking 7 mg of warfarin a day and my INR is 2.5.I had a liver transplant 10 months ago,and was told my vascular system was not great.Given my overall situation I am concerned about heart attacks and strokes.Do you think I should be taking 75mg of aspirin a day as well as the warfarin? Thanks.
1569985 tn?1328247482 I take my warfarin before bed, so my time off warfarin is more like 1.5 days than two days. I go back on warfarin right after the exam, may take 7.5 mg instead of the usual 5 mg to get back on INR faster. I believe being off of warfarin increases my risk of a clot, but the risk is still low. Anyway, I split the difference toward the side of limiting clot risk while slightly increasing the risk of bleeding due to (minor) surgery.
Avatar f tn Given that yesterday he said to not take the warfarin he was changing me from the genertic warfarin and putting me on the brand name of the med coumadin. Said some folks do not tolerate warfarin well but do well on coumadin and i am to start the coumadin today. I would be lying if i didn't say i am a bit gunshy at this point. This med has made me absolutely miserable and today is my 43rd bday...
Avatar m tn I believe it could be a FATAL mistake if you stopped taking the warfarin. Mechanical valves will clot without warfarin and this could cause a heart attack, stroke or heart failure and could cause you to have to have another open heart surgery. PLEASE ,PLEASE talk to your doctor about any changes in the warfarin.
Avatar f tn I hope yours dissolves and you can come off warfarin. maybe surgery is a possibility? I was told they would do that right away and only in an emergency situation. I'm still wearing compression stockings but a lighter compression now than at first. That helped my pain tremendously initially. I plan to take natural blood thinnners forever now in the form of vitamin e, ginger and red wine. aspirin is too irritating for me I think, but I will use it when my symptoms get worse.
Avatar f tn continue warfarin therapy, withhold warfarin therapy for a period of time before and after the procedure, or temporarily withhold warfarin therapy and also provide a "heparin bridge" during the perioperative period. Which management option to follow is primarily determined by the characteristics of the patient and by the nature of the procedure.
Avatar n tn 0 what could cause it to change?I take 2.5 dosage daily for almost 3 years..I have had surgery in 2010 to replace my mitrol vaveand have been taking warfarin sodium 2.
Avatar n tn They put her on enoxaparin and wanted her to rest for 5 days until the next control. She refused to be put on heparin or warfarin because of her history of gastrointestinal bleeding and recent surgery. We've been told thrombectomy would be extremely risky, given her medical history. I read somewhere enoxaparin only prevents further occlusion of the vein and does not lyse existing clot.
Avatar n tn my mother underwent for the valve replacemet(mitral valve and tissue valve)before two years.suddenly she got blood clot in her leg.she ask to use warfarin to remove the blood clot.now she is getng back to normal.may i knw why was it happened suddenly and will it occur in fucture? will this lead to stroke? doctor saying cox of the heart rhythm problem. is that occuring cox of her valve?
Avatar m tn I take the aspirin in the morning and the warfarin in the evening. I have at least two risk factors, maybe three given I had mitral valve surgery a couple of years ago.
