Two years ago I had a stenosis in my small intestine which required surgery to correct.Seven months ago I had a pulmonary embolism and I am told this may have been the second one.I am taking 7 mg of warfarin a day and my INR is 2.5.I had a liver transplant 10 months ago,and was told my vascular system was not great.Given my overall situation I am concerned about heart attacks and strokes.Do you think I should be taking 75mg of aspirin a day as well as the warfarin?Thanks.

I believe it could be a FATAL mistake if you stopped taking the warfarin. Mechanical valves will clot without warfarin and this could cause a heart attack, stroke or heart failure and could cause you to have to have another open heart surgery. PLEASE ,PLEASE talk to your doctor about any changes in the warfarin.

The most common anticoagulation drug prescribed after heart valve surgery is warfarin (Coumadin). The newer blood thinners are apixaban and dabigatran, also known as Pradaxa and are expensive. The main concern is that specific antidotes for bleeding are available for warfarin but not yet developed for the new drugs. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

A drastic change in diet can alter INR also, but in my own personal experience, it has usually been other meds that caused me to need to change my warfarin dosage and not my diet. An INR that is consistently out of range is dangerous. Don't worry about maintaining the same dose of warfarin. Worry about maintaining an INR that is consistently within range. Whatever dose of warfarin you have to take to stay in range is okay.

He was also on Warfarin after his second surgery. Last December, he had sore throat for three weeks and one day he vomitted and in like 15 mintues he passed away. I am not surre if his tissue valve failed or something else.

Xarelto is one of the newer blood thinners, but my ep told me there is no antidote to the newer drugs and should you need emergency surgery they could be a problem. With Warfarin you can be given Vitamin K or plasma to reverse the effects. I wonder if trying the brand Coumadin might help you? I know the genericss are supposed to be the same, but sometimes people do better on the original drug. Just a thought. I say definitely discuss it with your doctor.

My mother had gone through a sleeve gastrectomy operation 3 weeks ago. On the 22nd post-operative day, due to severe pain in the epigastric zone, her doctor ordered an abdominal CT. It turns out that portal vein and superior mesenteric vein are thrombosed. They put her on enoxaparin and wanted her to rest for 5 days until the next control. I was taking warfarin for the knee surgery that was done feb. l4.and the Dr. took me off it on the after surgery follow up appointment this past thur. I don't know if I have Atrial Firillation. I do take blood pressure mediine.

Now after a week of Warfarin and Lovemox shots, I am scheduled for a venogram, thrombolysis and then surgery to remove my 1st rib. Hi, I had a double bypass in May 2011, three months ago and in the past two weeks i am getting very intense chest pain like i had before the surgery. I am having an angiogram in 5 days time and i am worried as they cannot put stents in because i am on Warfarin (Comadum} and they cannot give me another blood thinner for the platlets as they do when they put in stents. I am concerned about possible drug interactions between the antibiotic azithromycin and the two heart medications warfarin and amiodarone. m sure they will tell you it is ok, and to resume your normal dosage after the procedure. Warfarin and Coumadin have really long half lives, so they take a while to be effected in the body. It will take a week or so to get back to your therapeutic range, but you should be ok as long as you are still following your diet and not taking any other medications that can interfere. Good for you having this procedure done. I like to see people keeping up with their screens. I am proud of you.

Given that yesterday he said to not take the warfarin he was changing me from the genertic warfarin and putting me on the brand name of the med coumadin. Said some folks do not tolerate warfarin well but do well on coumadin and i am to start the coumadin today. I would be lying if i didn't say i am a bit gunshy at this point. This med has made me absolutely miserable and today is my 43rd bday...

I hope yours dissolves and you can come off warfarin. maybe surgery is a possibility? I was told they would do that right away and only in an emergency situation. I'm still wearing compression stockings but a lighter compression now than at first. That helped my pain tremendously initially. I plan to take natural blood thinnners forever now in the form of vitamin e, ginger and red wine. aspirin is too irritating for me I think, but I will use it when my symptoms get worse.
