Common Questions and Answers about Warfarin interactions

Avatar m tn Enhanced hypoprothrombinemic response to warfarin has been reported in patients with acute alcohol intoxication and/or liver disease. The proposed mechanisms are inhibition of warfarin metabolism and decreased synthesis of clotting factors. Binge drinking may exacerbate liver impairment and its metabolic ability in patients with liver dysfunction. The risk of bleeding may be increased. Conversely, reductions in INR/PT have also been reported in chronic alcoholics with liver disease.
Avatar n tn Warfarin (coumadin): Because of the increased risk of bleeding, the concomitant administration of Warfarin with Plavix should be undertaken with caution. (See PRECAUTIONS - General.) At high concentrations in vitro, clopidogrel inhibits P450 (C).
Avatar n tn To date there have been no reports of an important interaction in humans between warfarin and clopidogrel. Nonetheless, because warfarin increases the risk of bleeding, blood tests to measure the degree to which the blood is anti-coagulated or thinned (prothrombin time; INR) may be ordered to assess the degree of blood-thinning when warfarin and clopidogrel are used together.
Avatar m tn you have to think of the worse case senario of switching to warfarin having the warfarin be too strong and your wife getting a bleed of some kind. This could be in her GI track, brain etc. and can be very life-threatening and could cause huge hospital bills. So, depending on how long she will have to take the plavix for, and what she is taking it for, it may actually be less expensive to use the plavix.
Avatar f tn Loading doses of warfarin are not warranted and may result in bleeding complications. Interactions with other drugs must be considered, and therapy in elderly patients requires careful management. Current dosing recommendations are reviewed, and practical guidelines for the optimal use of warfarin are provided". Hope this helps, and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond. Thanks for your question. Take care.
Avatar f tn My INR will not go above 1.5/1.6. And yes, I know all about the Vit K interactions and anything else that is possible to Google about interactions.
233622 tn?1279334905 The clearance of R-warfarin is generally half that of S-warfarin, thus as the volumes of distribution are similar, the half-life of R-warfarin is longer than that of S-warfarin. The half-life of R-warfarin ranges from 37 to 89 hours, while that of S-warfarin ranges from 21 to 43 hours. Studies with radiolabeled drug have demonstrated that up to 92% of the orally administered dose is recov-ered in urine. Very little warfarin is excreted unchanged in urine.
Avatar n tn s a weekend but I think you could google that. Also, I know walgreens has an option on their website that tells you about drug interactions....you may try that. Or just call your pharmacist they would definetly be able to help you! Sorry I couldn't answer it for you!
Avatar m tn Coumadin/warfarin is notorious for the difficulty in keeping your levels in range. Coumadin is known for having many drug-drug and drug-food interactions, which can make you over or under coagulated. For instance, since it works by being a vitamin K antagonist, foods that contain vitamin K (like leafy greens) can lower your INR. Taking vitamin E or fish oil or aspirin could raise it, and make bleeding more likely.
612551 tn?1450022175 I have been taking 2 grams of Korean Ginseng for a few months now and have found no problem with interactions with use of Warfarin. I not here for experience here. I take mostly in the hope to achieve some energy improvements, none noted, but fyi, I lost about 10 pounds down from about 238, I am 6' 5". I believe this may be due to the Ginseng affect on my digestion of carbohydrates (which I love to eat) - causing less production of blood sugar and fat.
Avatar m tn I am concerned about possible drug interactions between the antibiotic azithromycin and the two heart medications warfarin and amiodarone. My relative has brief history of heart problems span one and a half years (though the underlying heart condition itself appears to be congenital). Rhythm problems resulted in CHF, hospitalization, and later diagnosis and heart surgery. Subsequent dysrhythmia and CHF has been prevented adequately with medication.
690060 tn?1247841741 s been making its way to FDA approval, which was finally given today. No INR monitoring, no food interactions. But cost might be $10/day rather than 10 cents. https://us2.ixquick.com/do/metasearch.pl?
Avatar n tn Three pulmonary emboli within a 2 year period is a serious problem, assuming that each has been confirmed. It is good that you are on Coumadin® (warfarin) but, a detailed attempt to discover the factors that have predisposed you to thrombosis and embolization, such a comprehensive diagnostic investigation, should be initiated without delay. There is no direct connection between pulmonary emboli and tuberculosis (TB), including skin test conversion.
4822967 tn?1367656696 I did check the drug interactions between methimazole (Tapizole), carbimazole and PTU (the three major ATMs...anti-thyroid meds) and warfarin. While interactions are listed, it appears ATMs enhance the blood thinning effect of warfarin. The warning was that warfarin might have to be lowered once on ATMs. Not the best situation, but given the alternatives... Are your going to do the RAIU despite the iodine?
Avatar f tn Given that yesterday he said to not take the warfarin he was changing me from the genertic warfarin and putting me on the brand name of the med coumadin. Said some folks do not tolerate warfarin well but do well on coumadin and i am to start the coumadin today. I would be lying if i didn't say i am a bit gunshy at this point. This med has made me absolutely miserable and today is my 43rd bday...
1322157 tn?1279656681 , of the School of Nursing at the University of Rochester Medical Center, an expert on drug interactions, explains that grapefruit juice is one of the foods most likely to cause problems with drugs, because it is metabolized by the same enzyme in the liver that breaks down many drugs. The cytochrome P-450 3A4 enzyme breaks down grapefruit juice into useful components for body, just like it breaks down dozens of medications.
Avatar m tn I checked for interactions between Levothyroxine and warfarin, and there are some, but they didn’t seem to fit. Any input would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn However, they require lifelong anticoagulation with medications such as warfarin, so that blood clots don’t form on the valve. Warfarin can cause major birth defects for unborn fetuses, and thus becomes more problematic for use during childbearing. However, with adequate planning, it can be done by switching to routine heparin injection.
Avatar n tn This is exactly what I read in The Coumadin (Warfarin) Help Book. Since my husband has been taking his Warfarin before his evening meal & his INR has been keeping fairly level. And that's good news, we want no more Strokes.
Avatar f tn DOES ANYONE KNOW IF WARFARIN CAN LOWER YOUR BLOOD COUNT AND AND ALSO LOWER CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D LEVELS?
