Common Questions and Answers about Warfarin interactions with food

Avatar m tn These visits come with their co-pays and deductibles too! Not to mention that warfarin has significant risks, drug interactions, food restrictions etc. And overall: you have to think of the worse case senario of switching to warfarin having the warfarin be too strong and your wife getting a bleed of some kind. This could be in her GI track, brain etc. and can be very life-threatening and could cause huge hospital bills.
Avatar m tn Enhanced hypoprothrombinemic response to warfarin has been reported in patients with acute alcohol intoxication and/or liver disease. The proposed mechanisms are inhibition of warfarin metabolism and decreased synthesis of clotting factors. Binge drinking may exacerbate liver impairment and its metabolic ability in patients with liver dysfunction. The risk of bleeding may be increased. Conversely, reductions in INR/PT have also been reported in chronic alcoholics with liver disease.
Avatar m tn Coumadin is known for having many drug-drug and drug-food interactions, which can make you over or under coagulated. For instance, since it works by being a vitamin K antagonist, foods that contain vitamin K (like leafy greens) can lower your INR. Taking vitamin E or fish oil or aspirin could raise it, and make bleeding more likely.
Avatar n tn Warfarin (coumadin): Because of the increased risk of bleeding, the concomitant administration of Warfarin with Plavix should be undertaken with caution. (See PRECAUTIONS - General.) At high concentrations in vitro, clopidogrel inhibits P450 (C).
Avatar n tn To date there have been no reports of an important interaction in humans between warfarin and clopidogrel. Nonetheless, because warfarin increases the risk of bleeding, blood tests to measure the degree to which the blood is anti-coagulated or thinned (prothrombin time; INR) may be ordered to assess the degree of blood-thinning when warfarin and clopidogrel are used together.
Avatar f tn Loading doses of warfarin are not warranted and may result in bleeding complications. Interactions with other drugs must be considered, and therapy in elderly patients requires careful management. Current dosing recommendations are reviewed, and practical guidelines for the optimal use of warfarin are provided". Hope this helps, and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond. Thanks for your question. Take care.
233622 tn?1279334905 The clearance of R-warfarin is generally half that of S-warfarin, thus as the volumes of distribution are similar, the half-life of R-warfarin is longer than that of S-warfarin. The half-life of R-warfarin ranges from 37 to 89 hours, while that of S-warfarin ranges from 21 to 43 hours. Studies with radiolabeled drug have demonstrated that up to 92% of the orally administered dose is recov-ered in urine. Very little warfarin is excreted unchanged in urine.
690060 tn?1247841741 s been making its way to FDA approval, which was finally given today. No INR monitoring, no food interactions. But cost might be $10/day rather than 10 cents. https://us2.ixquick.com/do/metasearch.pl?
Avatar f tn My INR will not go above 1.5/1.6. And yes, I know all about the Vit K interactions and anything else that is possible to Google about interactions.
Avatar n tn s a weekend but I think you could google that. Also, I know walgreens has an option on their website that tells you about drug interactions....you may try that. Or just call your pharmacist they would definetly be able to help you! Sorry I couldn't answer it for you!
Avatar f tn However, if you vary significantly on some days, those days will have either too high to too low a coagulation result from your medication. I do very well with Warfarin, and I take a multi vitamin every day that in fact contains some "K", but I take the exact same amount every day and I try to have some salad or other "K" containing food each day to keep my intake near some regular (unmeasured) level. I take 5 mg of Warfarin every evening, before going to bed.
612551 tn?1450022175 I have been taking 2 grams of Korean Ginseng for a few months now and have found no problem with interactions with use of Warfarin. I not here for experience here. I take mostly in the hope to achieve some energy improvements, none noted, but fyi, I lost about 10 pounds down from about 238, I am 6' 5". I believe this may be due to the Ginseng affect on my digestion of carbohydrates (which I love to eat) - causing less production of blood sugar and fat.
Avatar n tn Painful stuff that arthritis if she has rhuematoid arth.worth checking to see if she has any food intolerances with my arthritis (RA) i was tested for a host of food and environmental factors and was found to be intolerant to Gluten Dairy and high Salycilates. After 3 months of total avoidance my sympyoms alleviated and now only have problems when i binge a little too much on these foods.
Avatar m tn As far as food im not sure look at your lable and the print out that came with your meds. I do know that asprin is forbidden.
Avatar n tn dshays... that happened to me the first time they put me on blood thinner...coumadin..warfarin.. but dont know if your husband would be on blood tghinner after surgery...probably not..
Avatar m tn Pradaxa is taken twice a day, shorter life in the body and is cleared from the body quicker than coumadin (warfarin). With warfarin, Vitamin K is used to reverse overanticoagulation in patients, there is no antidote for Pradaxa. Warfarin a lot cheaper than Pradaxa. Good luck with your ablation. Hope you do well on Pradaxa! Best wishes!!
1796911 tn?1315605346 I also eat some fruits that thin the blood so I can take fewer doses of the rat poison (warfarin). I would rather thin my blood with food than drugs. If you would like a list of fruits that thin the blood just ask me. You have to be consistent with any food so as not to change your INR to much. Just make sure you speak to your doctor first.
Avatar m tn or reduced dose. How does your stomach do on regular aspirin? Take with food may reduce irritation.
Avatar m tn t see how they could treat with warfarin under those circumstances. Anyone taking warfarin must be monitored routinely with a PT to check clotting factor. Warfarin can be some nasty stuff but if reduces fibrosis what the heck. They've thrown every other drug at us and we still keep bouncing back. Thanks for the info.
Monster I have been taken off Warfarin, prescribed after surgery. I possess 14 2.5mg tablets. What is the safest way for me to dispose of them?
