1846163 tn?1331048748 m not quite sure if the contrandication is a result of the Incivek elevating the plasma concentration of the statin or the statin lowering exposure and loss of efficacy of the Incivek but it's one or the other.
Avatar m tn I am currently on my 4th statin med since last fall to lower my LDL. I have had some intense muscle and joint pain in the past, which is why my doctor has been changing my statin type and dosage. We're trying to find the right combo. I have a history of CAD and PAD, have had a femoral stent, and am a smoker.(59 yo male, btw). Does anyone know if I can substitute 20 mg Lipitor for my 20 mg Simvastatin, which I just ran out of?
Avatar f tn Coreg can make a person feel extremely tired and loss of energy. Coreg is the best beta blocker as it blocks more receptors than Tropol XL. There is a medication that is being used in Europe that hopefully will be here in the US soon. It is a combination of Coreg and Tropol XL, I believe. This gives all the benefits of Coreg and reduces the tiredness that people complain about. Our relatives in Europe use the medication and have energy to travel to US and all around the states.
Avatar m tn From the very onset of use of statin drugs for their powerful cholesterol lowering effect, muscle aches and pains reflecting possible underlying muscle inflammation....Lipitor and Vytorin most probable. Some doctors don’t believe that statins can cause side effects such as muscle or joint pain or memory problems. Others have seen so many cases they have developed different strategies for lowering cholesterol.
Avatar m tn Someone suggested that I consider inner imaging screening (EBT Hart scan). I am on Lipitor and Vytorin, I was taken off of Benicar two months ago because of the back pain and an elevated CPK 200's. Recent blood test revealed my cholesterol at 118 but my CPK at 205 and still experiencing lower back back pain. My blood pressure is 110/70 to 120/80. No prior hart problems. Do you think I should consider this image screening?
Avatar n tn I am not quoting an incidence rate based on friends and family with adverse reactions, I am quoting the incidence rate as found in the 4S study comparing a statin control group to a placebo control group. The statin group reported 1 incidence in 2,220 and the placebo group 1 in 2,223. Also, statins do nothing to the heart or cardiovascular systems so I doubt if they had anything to do with your uncle's condition. The important thing is he recovered.
Avatar f tn cholesterol increased, but a more common reason can be from a lack of exercise, not taking a statin, diabetes issues, an increase in carbs or fat in the diet, and much more. Cholesterol control is a holistic matter of diet, drugs and exercise in my opinion.
Avatar f tn Fatigue and lethargy are side effects of atenolol, however, I do not see any information suggesting that muscle weakness is a side effect of atenolol. I see that you also take Vytorin. It appears that symptoms of ALS,( Lou Gehrig's Disease) have been reported to the FDA in a higher than expected number of patients taking statins. ALS is a progressive motor neuron disorder with symptoms such as difficulty walking or standing, difficulty with fine motor skills and muscle paralysis.
Avatar m tn I took lipitor for twenty years without problems until menopause and the dose was raised from ten to twenty mg. I have gone off and on all statin drugs and recently have been trying generic liptor. I have muscle aches again and headaches this time. Is there anything esle besides statins I can try? I have lost twenty-five pounds and my cholesterol has gone from338 to 228. I think that the lipitor is making me very uncomfortable and that I really can not tolerate it.
Avatar f tn The only FDA approved drug that has had clinical trails is Crestor. It is a statin drug so you have to watch for muscle pain , fatigue with it. If you get any tell you doctor right away. Have they done a full lipid panel on you too? Diet only lowers your cholesterol by about 10%. So, it helps to not eat any extra cholestrol as your liver is what genetically controls the amount of receptors you are born with that break down cholesterol.
Avatar m tn I quit taking it, and within 2 weeks they were gone, despite an allergist not finding it. I tried Vytorin, had muscle and joint pain. But in the past few years, taking simvistatin and a few others, it has been a mood/anger issue. My wife complains, telling me I'm pain to live with, I argue all the time, go off at the slightest thing. And I have to admit, I can feel it too. In doing things around the house, if I run into a difficult task, I get aggravated and frustrated very quick.
Avatar f tn I do not think that Statin drugs directly cause Afib, but from my own experience - and I had been on Statins for many years before they discovered my RBBB and an excessive amount of PACs and PVCs - I am convinced that they are the cause of this. Why? While on Statins I had severe Rhabdomyolysis affecting basically my whole body. After a trip to the ER, because of severe pain in my kidney area, they could not find a cause for this and sent me home with an injection of Dilaudid.
Avatar n tn Brand name and generic versions of statin drugs must carry these warnings on their labels, the FDA today announced. The products include: Lipitor (atorvastatin), Lescol (fluvastatin), Mevacor (lovastatin), Altoprev (lovastatin extended-release), Livalo (pitavastatin), Pravachol (pravastatin), Crestor (rosuvastatin), and Zocor (simvastatin).
Avatar n tn need help. i have been on vytorin for 4 years and on routine blood tests, my cpk has been in the 500-700 range for all 4 years (2 blood draws a year). I am asymptomatic. This past Jan, i added "flush free niacin" to my morning meds/supplements, and in July i noted my cpk was 1000. Still asymptomatic. In the past, I stopped working out for a couple of weeks and stopped statins for 2 weeks, and when rechecked, the CPK's were still in the 700 range.
1583640 tn?1296674030 Valid for credit through 12/01/2011 December 1, 2010 — A post hoc analysis of the Greek Atorvastatin and Coronary Heart Disease Evaluation (GREACE) study suggests that physicians should not let mildly to moderately abnormal liver test results stop them from using a statin in patients with coronary heart disease [1]. Statin therapy is not only safe in these patients, report investigators, but it significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular events and improves liver-function tests.
645800 tn?1466860955 Been choking down 800mg gabapentins for a while now. They're scored; I could cut them in two, but they'd still be the same width, just half the length. They'd have rough corners then, too. Hey, Dennis, would they let you use Vytorin? It's worked super for my cholesterol. My insurance company puts it in the highest category, meaning I have to pay my highest copay rate, but it's still largely covered. No generic yet. Just a thought. Best wishes.
Avatar m tn //www.merck.com/product/usa/pi_circulars/v/vytorin/vytorin_pi.pdf EMedTV has an article that explains some statins are associated with high liver enzymes. It says increases in liver enzymes occur in 1.7 percent of people taking Vytorin. This increase appears to be more prevalent in people who are taking higher doses. It goes on to explain other causes of high liver enzymes.
Avatar n tn t lower your cholesterol, just take the statin like Vytorin that controls both ingested and familial cholesterol. Believe me, taking the pill is preferable to a heart attack.
335728 tn?1331414412 Now, whether to take a statin. I am not totally against taking a statin. I just believe that the growing attitude that all people should be on a statin for their general health is bogus. If your cholesterol is high then you may need a statin. Aside and my educated OPINION: Atkins was correct when he claimed that his diet would lower cholesterol, make triglycerides plummet and raise HDL. This has been shown by independent studies. It also worked wonders in me as I lost weight.
932338 tn?1247125679 Almost forgot, DO NOT EVER TAKE STATIN DRUGS like lipitor, vytorin, zocor, etc. They ruin your body, specifically your nervous system and brain. We need cholesterol which is what our brains and nervous systems are mostly made of, and those drugs lower cholesterol way too much, and cause alot of neurological symptoms, as well as prevent the liver from making CoQ10, and alot of other nutrients and enzymes we need to stay healthy.STAY AWAY FROM STATINS...lipitor caused me some major problems.
10996785 tn?1432812977 There a lot of statin meds work in different ways, why not try another one, or at least, speak with a doctor about your concerns.
Avatar m tn Your LDL level suggests a high fat diet and/or familial high cholesterol. A drug like Vytorin controls both these types of cholesterol, at least it did in my case. I had levels like that and tried through diet alone to control my cholesterol and ended up with lots of heart trouble. Also, the retinopathy diagnosis is disturbing. It can be caused by diabetes but from high blood pressure as well.
Avatar n tn However, these drugs also block the manufacture of important nutrients like CoQ10. CoQ10 is essential for a healthy heart and energy production. Statin drugs are often associated with side effects including nausea, headaches, dizziness, sleep disturbances, sexual dysfunction, fatigue, shortness of breath, memory loss, liver problems, muscle weakness, muscle pain, peripheral neuropathy and cardiomyopathy due to a depletion of Coenzyme Q10.
Avatar m tn My doctor perscribed Vytorin 10/20. This is where my health began to deteriorate. I developed both clay soft stool and chronic explosive diarrhea in the mornings (3-4X before leaving the house) and excessive tiredness. At first I didnt put the two together, I just thought it was something I was eating or drinking so I continuously changed my diet. Nothing helped. I went back to the doctor for a 1 yr follow up and mentioned the diarrhea.
572651 tn?1530999357 we have several discussions going on about the use of statins for cholesterol and their possible side effects. I figure starting a new thread is the best way to get this information to everyone - this is from a paper available online - Beatrice Golomb, MD, is the author of this research "Muscle problems are the best known of statin drugs' adverse side effects," said Golomb.
Avatar m tn Reading the many comments I came across one that stated lovastatin is an old medicine and is not used often. After recent cath my doctor changed my medication from vytorin ,have taken vytorin for 5 years, to lovastatin. I did ask for a cheaper medicine and lovastatin was what he came with. I have no problems or side effects . My question is lovastatin less effective then other of the same and if not why is it not used often. My engineering background comes out if I d not have proper data.
Avatar n tn I have IBS with diarrhea. My family doctor gave me Vytorin and it caused ONE HORRIBLE bout with the diarrea. So, my question is: Should people with IBS not take Vytorin? If the answer is: No,they shouldn't,then why do you think this side effect is not listed on the pamphlet that comes with the drug.....or any where else?!
Avatar f tn I have been on Vytorin for a few years and my insurance company will not pay for it anymore. My doctor has switched me to Simvastatin (40mg) daily. My question is has anyone else made the switch and have they noticed any side-effects?
