You do not need to take the valtrex daily. I cannot take it daily because it causes kidney issues, but my doc suggested the following.
I take one when I first feel the tingle, before you see anything, and another every 12 hours for 2 days, or till its gone. As long as I start the med before it erupts I can stop them
Since I began doing that I have not had any come up, and the frequency of me taking the med has decreased signifigantly.

I just started dating someone who was honest in disclosing the fact that he contracted HSV-2 unknowingly from an unfaithful ex a couple of years ago. He is on anti-viral/daily suppressive therapy (Valtrex) and of course, I'll ensure that we always use condoms. I am aware that this is quite prevalent and affects around 20% of the population. With regards to my own status, I've been tested and I don't have HSV-2.
A prophylactic treatment is to start HIV prevention drugs within 24 hours; such as Viread to stop the virus from entering the body and cure the issue. Now regarding herpes, if someone suspects herpes exposure, if I were to start on Valtrex within 24 hours, would this stop the virus from spreading or in other words kill it as so it cant spread any further. Same goes for taking Doxycycline stop all bacterials in there tracks prior to manifestation.
I received a negative result after 8 weeks, however I am concerned because I take valtrex daily as a proactive measure to keep my cold sores in check. I am concerned that this would effect the window period or the accuracy of the test.

I am trying to figure out how to minimize outbreaks (I seem to get one after every infusion) I am currently on generic valtrex which I had only been taking for outbreaks. I looked up the standard dosing for prevention of outbreaks but that doesnt seem to keep them at bay either. I cant stop getting th remicade so are there any suggestions as to what I can do?

Valtrex (500mg, once daily), Vitamin-C (620mg with bioflavonoids), L-Lysine (1000mg), and Zinc (50mg). The only noticeable outbreak has been along my upper-inner left thigh, slightly upon the scrotum.
1.) To what effect will these supplements would aid in inhibiting herpes: unnoticeable to extreme?
2.) Since I have genital HSV-1 is that the area of highest transfer risk?
I've on acyclovir for shingles prevention and had a one night stand 14 weeks ago. I had a blood test at the 7 week mark and it was negative. When should I have my next blood test to be sure I'm negative.
Hey Doc, question for you. I was diagnosed with HSV-2 by type-specific serology 16 months ago after experiencing a primary herpes infection 20 months ago. So, I've been on Valtrex for 16 months without any outbreaks. I've now met the love of my life and DO NOT want to give her herpes.
Is someone workig on a prevention vaccine? That would make it so easy for couples and sexually active people.
The result showed that it was herpes. She prescribed me with valtrex, first 5 days 1000 mg and the next 5 days, 500 mg. I had to put acyglovir topically as well. I was feeling fine until my next period. I got another outbreak. My doctor prescribed me a supressive valtrex therapy (500 mg daily). But my period started again and I am feeling itchy and unconformable (I might have a rash on the genitalia). It is the second week that I am taking valtrex, why would I get an outbreak?

Throw in condoms along with that and you are looking at a 1% risk/year on average of contracting hsv2 from your parter. Pretty reasonable odds for the most part, in fact if the only birth control she used was the pill, that's a 1% risk/year of getting pregnant ( gives you something to compare it to ).
It got worse and I felt Tingling on my scrotum, bladder and taint with burning, I was convinced it was Herpes so I started taking Valtrex, 100mg twice a day and antifungal cream. After two days it went away, I stopped the Valtrex and cream then came back two days later. Now my testicles are aching and are really saggy and red with purple veins.
I have seen No blisters or papules.
Husband has had HSV-2 for 14 years. He has taken Valtrex for suppression and outbreak treatments during our 7 yr. marriage. We also use condoms consistently. Recently he had direct hand-genital contact (stratching he thought was jock itch), next day had a genital outbreak and about 2-3 days later massive outbreak on both hands and little on his feet.
I am also on Valtrex for cold sores, and I wondered if it would throw my test results off because its an anti-viral or extend the window period.
My test results have came back negative twice since my first outbreak two years ago. Valtrex and valcalor or whatever the prevention medicine is called has not helped make it go away. It helps with the pain for a little bit but sometimes it is so uncomfortable that I can't sleep. I don't have blisters, just lesions (like cuts) on the left side and the top. It's always been in the same spot over the two years.
Quick Question: Can taking VALTREX before a sexual encounter minimize the risk of contracting Herpes. And if so, how long (or after) the encounter do you recommend taking it?
I have oral hsv-1, very severely. i take valtrex almost daily when i can get a prescription, sometimes letting it slide. i am an actress so cold sores are just the worst.
two years ago i wasn't taking the valtrex. i had protected sex with two partners and unprotected oral sex with the same two guys, over the course of a year. one encounter each.
That's the dose people take for Herpes prevention (twice daily Valtrex). As for the HIV- I'm not concerned with it obviously since I didn't mention it.

Not really. I just knew that if I took Valtrex immediately after exposure that the virus would be unable to function well with that in my body. It takes about 2 days before the virus makes its way to the Sacral Sensory Ganglion.
Recently had sex using a condom with no visible outbreak. I had been taking Valtrex for 9 or 10 days prior. His penis may have touched my vagina while he was getting the condom open, but there was no unprotected penetration. Is it very likely I could have passed this on to him?
She is on a daily 500mg dose of Valtrex. She keeps saying “I know my body” to the effect of being able to tell from the slightest of signs that it is not a good time to engage. She says that sometimes she feels something but no symptoms appear. Could this be a hidden symptom of viral shedding, a helpful sign that now is not a good time? Questions: What are my chances of staying with her and not contracting the H be it in the short or long term?
