After thinking about it around 12 hours later I realized I was at risk for infection. I took 1500 MG of Valtrex and will continue with 1000MG twice a day for a few more days. It makes some sense that the Valtrex could interfere with the HSV1 virus spreading from the initial infection sight to the nerves if you have Valtrex in your system prior to of soon after an initial exposure. Does anyone have any insight?
I am an uncircumcised 24 year old mle and 24 days ago I received oral sex from long timr gf. She also kissed me heavily and she had a scabbed cold sore she had been treating with zoovirax. 4 hours after the oral sex, I went to the ER and was inmediately given 2 grams of valtrex and a 7 seven day prescription. I was tested two days after and I am negative for both hsv 1 and 2.
Thanks for the quick response Jerry! I went to the doctor and showed her my cold sore. She mentioned that because it's past the scanning stage and I've been taking Valtrex, it's no longer contagious.

Hey all, so I had a cold sore pop up today, they are normal occurence for me every few months. I have had yet to have while pregnant but now sure enough here it is. I am 16w 1d and I am debating on if my normal routine to rid myself of them is safe while pregnant. I would usually apply my Acyclovir ointment a few times a day to the cold sore and take two pills of Lysine, one in the morning and one at night and usually in a day or two it would be gone.
I seen something on my lip about a week ago, but thought nothing of it, It got worst and embarrassing, so I went to urgent care, and I find out I have a cold sore. I was very upset when I found out and the fact that a guy gave this to me and didn't even tell me made me even more upset, Ive been taking valtrex, but I need this to go away as soon as possible,it's already been 8 days, and it's still here.
When you were sick, did you test for covid? Did you recently get a covid vaccine?
We've had reports from people that having covid and/or getting the vax can trigger herpes sores, and it can be really hard to get them under control.
Are you taking the Valtrex daily, as suppression? That would be my suggestion after you see the doc and get it confirmed that these are indeed hsv1 outbreaks.
I am having a really bad cold sore outbreak (getting one right after the other), so I finally asked my doctor for Valtrex. He prescribed 1000 mg a day for 7 days to clear it all up. I am looking online though, and it looks like the normal dosage is 2000 mg a day, twice a day, for one day. I am confused, and the doctor's office will be closed until Monday. Anyone know anything about the dosage I was given and if it will be effective?
m definitely going to see if I can get the Valtrex for the time I feel the cold sore and not the daily suppresive treatement unless anything changes. Lets hope not!
This virus doesn't travel in blood correct? And last you mention PCR while talking about viral shedding and I might be missing something but I'm not exactly sure what PCR stands for. Sorry!

You do not need to take the valtrex daily. I cannot take it daily because it causes kidney issues, but my doc suggested the following.
I take one when I first feel the tingle, before you see anything, and another every 12 hours for 2 days, or till its gone. As long as I start the med before it erupts I can stop them
Since I began doing that I have not had any come up, and the frequency of me taking the med has decreased signifigantly.
she has only performed oral sex on me so i know that i am fairly safe since she has hsv2 and never had a cold sore in her mouth.
we want to have sex, but i am a bit hesitant. i will wear a condom every time so i wiill have that protection and the protection with valtrex. i am wondering how likely it is for me to contract genital herpes from her if we always use protection both with valtrex and condoms, and never have sex on outbreaks?
Last week, in the same mark where I had had my first chin cold sore, a LARGE cold sore erupted. I immediately took Valtrex. On day 7 of my course of Valtrex, the sore was still there, and still, clearly active and I began to feel tingling on the side of my mouth, around my mouth, inside it. I have not felt this tingling sensation before but I hear it indicates that more cold sores are going to erupt. My doctor gave me another course of Valtrex.

In the beginning of January, I had my first cold sore on my upper lip. I tried Abreva and it eventually went away after a week or so. About 7 weeks ago, I got a second cold sore at a different location. Since that date, and for every week following, I'd have a new sore appear as the old one was healing/gone....every 4-5 days almost like clockwork with no breaks in between. They rarely overlap in time frame (I think once?).
) A month ago, once I acquired genital HSV-1, I had flu symptoms. However, I recall having cold sore when I was much younger, leading me to believe I had herpes before this. Does the shift in location cause a recurrence of those flu symptoms? I was extremely stressed before the outbreak as well, did this just trigger an unusual emergence of the herpes and I’m at the same risk I was previously?
