You can break your valtrex in half and take 500mg 2x/day if you prefer. Makes little difference whether you take it all at one dose or divide it into 2 doses so do which one you feel most comfortable with.
However, ever since December 2009 I have been experiencing chronic outbreaks of cold sores. I sought medical attention this past February and was put on Valtrex. I noticed that the sores were getting more severe around the time of my period. Several doctors told me that going on a low hormone birth control (ortho tri cyclen lo) would be the solution. It has definitely decreased the severity of the sores during the time of my period.
1) I have the beginnings of a cold sore on the lip. For Valacyclovir and Valtrex the recommended dosage is 2000mg every 12 hours...total of 4000mg in 24 hours. I have 2000mg of Valtrex and 2000mg Valacyclovir from prior outbreaks. Can I take them together for the some effect? Or do I need to take the 4000mg total dose with the same drug?
2) I am getting cold sores on the lip up to 3 times a year. There is no common catalyst. Each outbreak if not treated early is as severe as all the rest.
3 weeks ago I started feeling really ill, I got a very sore throat with swollen glands in my throat, headaches, etc.. a week later i got a cold sore. I was prescribed a two day dosage of valtrex and it went away, but my sore throat never did, this past week i have been freaking out about genital hsv1 because my lymph nodes in my groin were tender, i had pain/ numbness in my left leg from my butt to my knee, but so far no blister, no painful urination, no tingling in vaginal area.....

I am an constantly stressful person I would usually only get outbreak (cold sore) once or twice a year but later in my later 20's I was getting outbreaks twice in a month or every month so I was prescribed 1gm of valtrex daily dosage. which would help for the most part and brought my outbreaks down to none or once a year again.
Hey all, so I had a cold sore pop up today, they are normal occurence for me every few months. I have had yet to have while pregnant but now sure enough here it is. I am 16w 1d and I am debating on if my normal routine to rid myself of them is safe while pregnant. I would usually apply my Acyclovir ointment a few times a day to the cold sore and take two pills of Lysine, one in the morning and one at night and usually in a day or two it would be gone.
I seen something on my lip about a week ago, but thought nothing of it, It got worst and embarrassing, so I went to urgent care, and I find out I have a cold sore. I was very upset when I found out and the fact that a guy gave this to me and didn't even tell me made me even more upset, Ive been taking valtrex, but I need this to go away as soon as possible,it's already been 8 days, and it's still here.
Since then, my fever and illness have subsided, but I’ve been getting one cold sore after the other. As soon as one sore resolves another pops up. I’ve been taking Valtrex to resolve them, so they have not been particularly bad outbreaks, but I am concerned about their recurrence. Does anyone have any insight into what could be causing this? I am seeing an ENT in a few days and would like to know if there’s anything specific you would suggest I ask about.
So I have been seeing a new guy for about two months now. Two weeks ago we engaged in a lot of heavy kissing and oral sex (I was the receiver) and about a week ago we engaged in kissing, oral sex (I was the receiver) and protected vaginal sex.After about a day or so I started having occassional itching on my anus but if I touch there is no pain, itching, sore spots or bumps.
It really sounds like a cold sore, which is a form of herpes. although I am impressed your doctor didn't already know this. Does it always come to the same area of your lip? Ask your doctor about cold sores. If it's that, then you need a prescription of Valtrex or Zovirax to keep them from showing up.
Also, don't be embarrassed. 95% of the world population is exposed to herpes by the time they are 18, and 30% of them get cold sores. Annoying and ugly, but very common.
At first I was getting cold sores about every 4 to 6 weeks. I then started taking 500 mg of Valtrex daily for suppression therapy. This seemed to reduce the frequency of my outbreaks to about once every 2 to 3 months. To save money, my insurance switched me to acyclovir (400 mg twice a day) with similar results as the Valtrex. Then starting about 3 months ago, I began to have outbreaks every two weeks even with the suppression therapy.

I have posted about this but haven't gotten a straight answer and even my doctor hasn't been able to give me a knowledgeable answer. I had my first cold sore outbreak on my lip about 1.5 months ago. I took Valtrex the day I had the outbreak and it immediately provided relief and eventually the sore crusted over and healed in about 7 days but left a small scar on my lip.
Just over a month later I had the same outbreak on my upper arm, went to a different doctor and he said it was a cold sore. He prescribed Valtrex twice a day for one day, which I did but then noticed another breakout just above the one present, so I upped the dosage of the Valtrex and it went away.
Then I went to see an Infectious Disease Specialist and he drew blood, and the tests came back postive for HSV-2. Is that possible considering I have had outbreaks but never on my genitals?
Hello, I recently had a Cold Sore (1st one ever) and went to a dermatologist. She prescribed 1GM twice a day for one day. Afterwards, take same dosage at first sign of symptoms.
I took the pills and about 1/2 day after first dosage, I began to feel itchy and small rashes began to appear and disappear throughout my body. They appeared on my hands, wrist, above the knee, neck, around my rib area, and waist.
Thanks for the quick response Jerry! I went to the doctor and showed her my cold sore. She mentioned that because it's past the scanning stage and I've been taking Valtrex, it's no longer contagious.
I am an uncircumcised 24 year old mle and 24 days ago I received oral sex from long timr gf. She also kissed me heavily and she had a scabbed cold sore she had been treating with zoovirax. 4 hours after the oral sex, I went to the ER and was inmediately given 2 grams of valtrex and a 7 seven day prescription. I was tested two days after and I am negative for both hsv 1 and 2.
Last week, in the same mark where I had had my first chin cold sore, a LARGE cold sore erupted. I immediately took Valtrex. On day 7 of my course of Valtrex, the sore was still there, and still, clearly active and I began to feel tingling on the side of my mouth, around my mouth, inside it. I have not felt this tingling sensation before but I hear it indicates that more cold sores are going to erupt. My doctor gave me another course of Valtrex.
