Valtrex prescribing information

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex prescribing information

valtrex

Avatar f tn Acyclovir (Zovirax) and famciclovir (Famvir) are similarly nontoxic. The official prescribing information for valacyclovir indicates a 1% chance of minor abnormalities of liver function in people taking valacyclovir, which was slightly higher than 0.5% for placebo. That difference was not statistically significant and there is no suggestion even for routine liver tests in people taking the drug.
Avatar n tn t seem interested in learning, only prescribing expensive Valtrex. SMH. We will never find a cure as long a the anti-viral industry is a multi-trillion dollar industry.
Avatar m tn Valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug. Greatly simplified - you swallow valtrex and your body converts it into acyclovir inside the body. You get more active acyclovir available to kick a little herpes butt by doing it this way. That's why you take valtrex less often. We don't have studies to confirm that acyclovir reduces transmission the same amount as valtrex does but we assume it does. http://racoon.com/herpes/v_a_compare.
Avatar m tn I also spoke with a friend who is a general practice physician and he suggested I still take valtrex as a precaution. I am undecided on this issue.
Avatar m tn I've been taking lysine & vitamin c pills every day. I am also avoiding arginine foods, the sun, stress... I basically lock myself in my house for the past 2 months. I've tried manuka honey (did nothing), abreva works sometimes, and I've been using lemon balm salve to moisturize my lips (works well). Carmex chapstick spread my cold sores so I stopped using Carmex and switched to lemon balm.
Avatar f tn It was another week before I was able to get in to see my gyn so I was off Valtrex during that time. The Valtrex cleared up the lesions from the initial outbreak and I had some pinching sensation when I went in to see my GYN the following week. I mentioned that I had the pinching/tingling feeling. She did a silver pap to see if I responded to the Valtrex and if there was any viral shedding at that time. It was negative. I went on 500 mg Valtrex daily for suppression.
Avatar m tn Rather, he suggested valtrex for 10 days as a precaution and consider a blood test in 6 weeks. The spot is now beginning to fade. It had a small white head which is now gone. It looks like a red pimple around a hair follicle. It doesn't hurt and there was never any puss. I am concerned for obvious reasons and want advice and information. Here are my specific issues: 1. Does this sound like an initial HSV1 infection; 2. We kissed often yet no symptoms on my mouth.
Avatar m tn C all came back negative. My doctor ended up prescribing me valtrex and I have been taking them twice a day although I have not noticed any changes.
Avatar n tn Of course that is correct waring :) Because there is more absorption of the active acyclovir from taking valtrex you only have to take it once a day. If you consult the valtrex prescribing info you'll see it compared to acyclovir in the one table and shows that they are comparable. All herpes antivirals have to prove that they work just as well as acyclovir to get approval.
Avatar f tn Thanks. I have started daily Valtrex to reduce the risk of transmission to him. After much discussion, he has agreed, reluctantly, to find out his status. If he's positive for HSV 2, I'll discontinue the med. If he's negative I will keep taking it. I got your book recently and will I'm sure get a lot of information (and much needed strategies for getting my head around this) from the book. Two final questions for you: 1.
Avatar n tn s unlikely that further ones will be this bad the initial outbreak is usually the worst and may last about a week before backing off,you could also ask your Doctor to put you on Suppressive Therpay Valtrex or Acyclovir which will help to lessen your outbreaks,as for passing it to your husband's genitals thats unlikley since he already has it orally and Oral HSV1 doesn't generally change it's site once it's established itself at it's preferred site .....
Avatar f tn The daily suppressive therapy are the ones that I will have to take every day for the rest of my life right? do you know how much they cost? are they expensive like the valtrex? and also. I have been this burning sensation for about 2 days. Could that be linked to the herpes virus. can how can i reduce the burning sensation I tired the epson salt bath and it works for a little while and stops.
127596 tn?1210922622 Instead I found an empty bottle of Valtrex, prescribed to her. Needless to say, there was no way in hell I was going to use any toothbrush in there. Rather than blowing up about it, I came home and did some research. But I was sad to find that Valtrex is only prescribed for Simplex I, Simplex II and Zosters. So I asked her about it (via instant message - is that bad?). She said she gets cold sores sometimes, and the Valtrex gets rid of them quickly.
Avatar f tn Just looking for anymore information or advise about withdraws from Fioricet / I have been taking this medication from years from Migrain headaches, it's seemed the longer I was on it the less it helped so I would increase my doses because I could not get rid of my headaches the other day I just stopped using it because it was like just this non stop headache.
Avatar m tn valtrex disrupts the viral replication process. affects any active herpes virus, not just herpes in the blood. when the virus isn't active, it sets up "housekeeping" in the nerves and isn't detectable on the skin. I'm not sure what you are asking about the herpes virus level dropping off. we have studies that show that you are shedding the virus about the same amount whether you are infected 2 years or 20 years if that's what you are asking about.
Avatar f tn your provider erred in prescribing valtrex for you to take. there was never any reason for you to take it. you weren't having any obvious lesions to treat. at this point, I"d seek out a herpes western blot blood test to see if your hsv2 igg is a true positive or not. Make sure it's been at least 16 weeks since you last had sex with anyone before doing so. keep asking questions!
Avatar m tn I recently had a sexual encounter with a woman who told me she had herpes and said she was on daily valtrex right after we finished up. I think she trusts valtrex more than I do. I immediately regret this decision. I gave her oral sex, and our genitals did touch but there was no penetration. Anyway I haven't had any symptoms, but have read so much contradictory information that it is very difficult to figure things out. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
Avatar f tn Information update....The doctor called back yesterday and said that the cultures tested positive for HSV 1 and negative for HSV 2. The doctor did give me some cream to apply, but other than that I just have to wait for them to go away. Thank you all for your advice!
Avatar n tn Has the girl you suspect you got this from tested for herpes to know her own status? Acyclovir is the original herpes antiviral. It's been a cheap generic for years now which is why it's so much cheaper than valtrex.
Avatar f tn I seriously doubt that you could go 10 years without making antibody, in spite of taking Valtrex daily. HOWEVER, your index value, though equivocal, is up there. Not positive, but up there. What is your HSV 1 value? Can you get a copy of your original lab report so I could evaluate it? I think there is a good chance that you don't have herpes, but at this point, we just don't have enough information to make a firm statement about that.
Avatar f tn I've had hsv 2 for 7 years and have started suppression therapy on Valtrex for 6 months to prevent transmission to a new partner. It seems like i have way more outbreaks taking valtrex daily compared to in the past where i would take it just for an outbreak i would get maybe once a year. Has anyone else reported this? Should i stop taking it daily?
Avatar m tn The NEW Doctor tells me that the only difference between taking Valtrex (what I have been taking) to Acyclovir (What they now want to prescribe) is the number of times a day you take it. I looked online...they say that Valtrex does a better job of helping you not to transmit the virus (most of this information provided by GlaxoSmithKline of course). The supression study has them identical. I am in a relationship where I really enjoy our "personal time".
Avatar f tn The information you all have provided here is greatly appreciated and not to mention very informative. I'm working on learning everything I can to help two people actually. They're a couple so it's very hard. But I know there are problems with addiction for both of them. I figure the more knowledge I have the more prepared I will be. I have one of them willing to talk to me tonight. He knows what I'm going to be talking about and I'm so surprised he said ok...
Avatar n tn I get cold sores and was recently prescribed valtrex for outbreaks. Trouble is, it isn't always obvious that I'm going to have an outbreak. I'd rather be safe than sorry - but don't want to take valtrex too often if it isn't safe. Would it be a problem if I took the one day 2,000 mg maybe twice per month when I thought an outbreak might be coming on?
Avatar f tn However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus. If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir.
Avatar n tn I went to a doctor today and she told me that she is almost sure that I have herpes and that I should start on valtrex right away. She also told me that I should have a test done but if I'm on Valtrex, will it affect the outcome of the test?
