Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex information

valtrex

Avatar m tn I also spoke with a friend who is a general practice physician and he suggested I still take valtrex as a precaution. I am undecided on this issue.
Avatar m tn Rather, he suggested valtrex for 10 days as a precaution and consider a blood test in 6 weeks. The spot is now beginning to fade. It had a small white head which is now gone. It looks like a red pimple around a hair follicle. It doesn't hurt and there was never any puss. I am concerned for obvious reasons and want advice and information. Here are my specific issues: 1. Does this sound like an initial HSV1 infection; 2. We kissed often yet no symptoms on my mouth.
Avatar f tn Thanks. I have started daily Valtrex to reduce the risk of transmission to him. After much discussion, he has agreed, reluctantly, to find out his status. If he's positive for HSV 2, I'll discontinue the med. If he's negative I will keep taking it. I got your book recently and will I'm sure get a lot of information (and much needed strategies for getting my head around this) from the book. Two final questions for you: 1.
Avatar n tn s unlikely that further ones will be this bad the initial outbreak is usually the worst and may last about a week before backing off,you could also ask your Doctor to put you on Suppressive Therpay Valtrex or Acyclovir which will help to lessen your outbreaks,as for passing it to your husband's genitals thats unlikley since he already has it orally and Oral HSV1 doesn't generally change it's site once it's established itself at it's preferred site .....
127596 tn?1210922622 Instead I found an empty bottle of Valtrex, prescribed to her. Needless to say, there was no way in hell I was going to use any toothbrush in there. Rather than blowing up about it, I came home and did some research. But I was sad to find that Valtrex is only prescribed for Simplex I, Simplex II and Zosters. So I asked her about it (via instant message - is that bad?). She said she gets cold sores sometimes, and the Valtrex gets rid of them quickly.
Avatar m tn valtrex disrupts the viral replication process. affects any active herpes virus, not just herpes in the blood. when the virus isn't active, it sets up "housekeeping" in the nerves and isn't detectable on the skin. I'm not sure what you are asking about the herpes virus level dropping off. we have studies that show that you are shedding the virus about the same amount whether you are infected 2 years or 20 years if that's what you are asking about.
Avatar m tn I recently had a sexual encounter with a woman who told me she had herpes and said she was on daily valtrex right after we finished up. I think she trusts valtrex more than I do. I immediately regret this decision. I gave her oral sex, and our genitals did touch but there was no penetration. Anyway I haven't had any symptoms, but have read so much contradictory information that it is very difficult to figure things out. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
Avatar f tn Information update....The doctor called back yesterday and said that the cultures tested positive for HSV 1 and negative for HSV 2. The doctor did give me some cream to apply, but other than that I just have to wait for them to go away. Thank you all for your advice!
Avatar f tn I seriously doubt that you could go 10 years without making antibody, in spite of taking Valtrex daily. HOWEVER, your index value, though equivocal, is up there. Not positive, but up there. What is your HSV 1 value? Can you get a copy of your original lab report so I could evaluate it? I think there is a good chance that you don't have herpes, but at this point, we just don't have enough information to make a firm statement about that.
Avatar m tn The NEW Doctor tells me that the only difference between taking Valtrex (what I have been taking) to Acyclovir (What they now want to prescribe) is the number of times a day you take it. I looked online...they say that Valtrex does a better job of helping you not to transmit the virus (most of this information provided by GlaxoSmithKline of course). The supression study has them identical. I am in a relationship where I really enjoy our "personal time".
Avatar n tn I get cold sores and was recently prescribed valtrex for outbreaks. Trouble is, it isn't always obvious that I'm going to have an outbreak. I'd rather be safe than sorry - but don't want to take valtrex too often if it isn't safe. Would it be a problem if I took the one day 2,000 mg maybe twice per month when I thought an outbreak might be coming on?
Avatar f tn However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus. If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir.
Avatar f tn How effective are condoms during this time - especially when you have never had an outbreak? And I read some information that stated some of the antiviral medications can reduce the viral shedding and thus reduce the transmission of the virus at these times as well. Is this true? 4. Of the medications Zovirax and Valtrex is one more effective than the other at prevention? Are there any others?
Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
3229560 tn?1347037510 Since I last posted soon after, I saw an immunologist and an infectious disease Dr both told me there was no treatment for EBV. I guess I refused to believe that. I then went back to my PCP, and asked her since EBV is the virus that causes herpies, and is an antiviral wouldn't it work to lower the viral load in my body ? I was extremely sick !!
Avatar f tn I have had only one outbreak, lasting 2 days since beginning the Valtrex. I called the makers of Valtrex to see if there were any studies done on effects of taking the drug longer than one year or if they had any data as to whether taking it for one year and then stopping it, seemed to lessen a person's outbreaks for a period of time. They would not give me any information, stating only that the only data they have ends at one year. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Avatar n tn Yes valtrex helps to shorten the time of shedding too. Only time will tell if your hubby contracted hsv1 or not from you. He even could've contracted it since the last time he was tested too. Most folks who have hsv1 orally don't get obvious cold sores to know it.
Avatar n tn A month in he got what the doctors thought could be shingles and gave him a script for Valtrex. For the past 3 months his penis has been very sensitive and he couldnt last more then a few minutes during sex. After he added the Valtrex to the mix he cant even last a few minutes at all! We never had these problem before he started taking these medications. Is this a side effect of the medications? Is it common?
Avatar m tn From time to time I try stopping the Valtrex and the virus seems to come back in the form of swollen, painful gums. Each time I stop Valtrex, it seems to take longer for the virus to reappear but it always reappears in the form of swollen and painful gums. I had this same symptom (although much more severe) when I initially contracted the infection together with fever and lesions on the penis and testicles and one strange lesion on my lower stomach.
Avatar f tn Hello, I was recently diagnosed with genital hsv-1. My GYN cultured one of the two sores I had. She also sent me for a blood test for HSV-2 only on that same day, rather than test me for both HSV-1 and HSV-2. She started me on 500mg Valtrex 2X day for 5 days. On the day of the visit, I gave her some background that I thought was pretty relevant should I be experiencing a Herpes outbreak. Namely, I have a back condition for which I had been recently prescribed methylprednisolone.
Avatar n tn Why are you taking Valtrex? If I understand correctly from reading your other posts, you are still trying to get diagnosed with a Western Blot test. That it's not being alleviated with Valtrex would indicate that this is not herpes, or at least totally. Have you had an IgG test done? Herpes also isn't constantly active. Have you seen a neurologist?
Avatar f tn ve also had a lot of bleeding which has been like a heavy period and lasted well over a week, nearly 2. I took Valtrex which stopped the bleeding so I assumed it was related to Herpes. But I have just finished a course of Valtrex and am bleeding again. At first I assumed it was my period but it's been heavy bleeding for a good few days now. I am also very itchy. I'm just so confused, is this herpes? If so why didn't the Valtrex clear up?
Avatar n tn (I understand the study was for eight months, so there is no information on long-term effect after a year on Valtrex. What about other anti-virals? Since they have more track history, I wonder if I should switch to pill that's been out longer, as long as it also will reduce transmission risk?) What does the research show on the reduction of asymptotic shedding of the virus with the use of Valtrex. I need this information to provide facts to my partner.
