valtrex for ms

I am taking Valtrex everyday for supressive therapy. But when I do get another outbreak, do I need to be put on antibiotics? Because I have MS the last out break had me in relapse mode in a major way. Infections really mess with my disease. Do I need to b put on antibiotics? I will ask my Dr. next time I go. But do you know?

Hi there and welcome to our little MS community, Totally agree with Kyle but wanted to add that infections and fevers are known to set off MS relapses if bad enough, or whats called pseudo relapses (not real), so if you did happen to have MS after all, that could be the reason why you may seem worse during or after an out break.

Valtrex is usually for herpes infections and they usually just treat gbs with IV antibiotics when you're in labor so idk id call them back and ask why they gave you that?

In May of 2007 I was diagnosed with gastroparesis, IBS and a mild hiatal hernia. I have also had shock sensations, numbing, tingling, heaviness and stiffness in my legs off and on for about 7 years and constant for the past year and a half. About 6 months ago I started having blurry and double vision. I was then diagnosed with Thygeson's Superficial Punctate Keratitis.

Just want to add that although IV steroids are often used for MS flares, that's not their only use. Since this is an MS forum of members who either have a diagnosis of MS or are in process of being evaluated for it, we really are not knowledgeable about other kinds of symptoms. If I were you I'd take mom to an ER, where she can get, we hope, much quicker relief.

I started taking Valtrex for Herpes2, and I feel anxious,depressed, and I have been waking up with bad headaches in the middle of the night. I don't know if it is all in my head, because I just tested postive for this, and I have been dealing with this for about 15 yrs. I am still shocked. I have been to several doctors who blew it off as a yeast infection. Does anyone know of any alternatives that work?

But it seems to still be getting worse and i am on valtrex. Plus i just found out than these types of things can cause a relapse. Can anyone help me w some info on this plz?

Ms. Warren, I just had my primary outbreak (I think) of oral herpes. I used acyclovir, and I believe it was 4 days I was given a one day treatment of Valtrex. 4 pills 2 times in one day, in all 8 pills. I can't remember what size they were. My blisters have improved dramatically, and the swelling in my lip seems to have completely subsided. My question is this. After having taken the valtrex, am I know much less contagious? Let me be more clear.

I had HSV-1. He gave me a prescription for Valtrex twice daily. I did not miss a day. The pain continued, and included nerve pain radiating down the backs of my legs. For the last three years I have felt as though I am getting a chemical peel in my vagina. Every single day for three years my vagina has burned all day long. I spend 16 hours a day feeling on fire. My first doctor seemed to think I was exaggerating and needed a psychiatrist.

After thinking about it around 12 hours later I realized I was at risk for infection. I took 1500 MG of Valtrex and will continue with 1000MG twice a day for a few more days. It makes some sense that the Valtrex could interfere with the HSV1 virus spreading from the initial infection sight to the nerves if you have Valtrex in your system prior to of soon after an initial exposure. Does anyone have any insight?

herpes outbreaks when I could feel something brewing in my lower lip but nothing more than redness and peeling happened. After being on valtrex for 6 months I started getting episodes of severe lower lip twitching right in the middle of the lip where herpes was worse. Since then it has become more frequent and can last hours. It's strong. PCP dx benign fasciculation somehow related to herpes and put me on klononin 1mg. Does this seem right?

I took Vatlrex 500mg twice daily for 20 days. While on Valtrex I had tingling and itchy sensations on my face. Stopped taking Valtrex because it cause burning patches around my mouth. After I stopped taking the medication I've develop more symptoms. Is this a side effect from the medication or is because of the Herpes Virus? I've had tingling, itching on my face. Twitching in my legs,arms and body, Heat sensations in the lower part of both legs.

I take Valtrex every day for HSV1 infection that occurs orally for me. I was diagnosed in 1996. In January of 2007 I had unprotected sex with a stranger and two days later I noticed redness all over my penis, I then noticed a small sore on the base backside of my penis I saw a GP on day 9 and she said she thought it might be herpes so she swabbed and ran a blood test.

Today I did a blood test for hsv 1 and hsv2 before a doctor diagnosed the blısters as herpes but doctor examined me has given me zostex until the results come out. zostex is used for herpes zoster and as far as I know not related with genital herpes, he said it was also an untiviral for hsv ? is that true? should I use it till the results come out?

Also started using a lot more chapstick on unaffected parts of my lip to keep them unchapped. My doctor suggested we should stay on the Valtrex reigment for a few more weeks, and if that is ineffective, then we can switch to an alternative called Famvir? I've HIV/STD negative btw. I'm just frusturated. I have a potential new gf that I haven't been able to kiss for almost 2 months, and this thing refuses to go away.

Hello, i had a hsv 1 genital outbreak about a month ago, i have had this for six years and only one outbreak since the first time, my question is, do i really need to stay on the valtrex for surpresive therapy, or would it be smarter to stay on it to avoid giving it to someone else

I have been on valtrex for the past 4 months (1 a day) if the symptoms I am having have not gone away for a period of 2 years ( symptoms are there for a week then subside for 2 - 3 days then come back ) this has been like clockwork for the past 2 years.

Anyone have success with valtrex alleviating symptoms ?My Dr. prescribed it for 1 week. I also take desipramine (TCA) and have not had any relief from that yet either. It has been 2 weeks. How long can this crazy virus last? Does it subside or run it's course within 6 months? I thought I read this somewhere. Sorry for the multiple questions- this is just so frustrating... I want relief. Any input would be helpful. Thanks!!!

I would not take Valtrex everyday for the rest of your life unless you want liver damage/failure. I took Valtrex for a little over a year to suppress the herpes and it worked well...only problem it that it elevated my liver enzymes which is not a good thing. Doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex and only take it if I absolutely need it, ie wedding, meeting, ect.

My doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex for a while to let my liver regenerate. While I think Valtrex is an excellent drug for treating HSV 2, I think users should take into consideration that long term use can cause some mild to moderate damage to the liver as my tests have proven. Also, anyone using Valtrex should not drink ANY alcohol while on it because it will exacerbate the problem with your liver. I'm hoping in a few weeks my liver tests go back to normal.

Burning more in the Genital area but all over my body! I have been taking 1 gram per day for 4 months. I was taking for longer before but i stopped to see if that's what's been causing the burning for about 1 month but im not sure if that was a long enough wait because i still had the burning.

my partner who i met has been on Valtrex for a couple of years and the pass year we had unprotected sex. I went and got tested and my blood work came back negative. She is ok with the results and angry that she allowed me to convince her and not using condoms. I just can't explained why we did it without condoms only that I love her and we are getting marry.

The rate of resistance to valtrex is about 1% in otherwise healthy folks. It really isn't going to be an issue for you. did you ever follow up on your other issues?

Rather than blowing up about it, I came home and did some research. But I was sad to find that Valtrex is only prescribed for Simplex I, Simplex II and Zosters. So I asked her about it (via instant message - is that bad?). She said she gets cold sores sometimes, and the Valtrex gets rid of them quickly. Indeed I remembered that the empty bottle was for a seven-day dosage. But in all of the times that I've seen her, I never noticed a cold sore.

OK. So its been nearly 2 months since I've been diagnosed with this inconvenience. Since I never had a "noticeable outbreak", every little itch or tingling that I get spooks me (The reason why I say that is because the time I had sex with my ex, I did have some tingling and 5 days later he had small blisters on his penis, so I know he contracted it from me).
