Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex breastfeeding category

valtrex

Avatar f tn Why not have breastfeeding as an option to talk about, have interest in, or that (we) are knowledgeable in.
Avatar f tn right now I don't have any Valtrex, i only have Acyclovir, would this also be rated as Category B? I thought that those two were basically the same thing, just that acyclovir is the cheaper, generic form of valtrex, but i could be wrong...
Avatar f tn The problem sounds more like its related to breastfeeding. It's not uncommon for breastfeeding mothers to have issues. It may have something to do with your Montgomery glands or a blocked milk duct.
Avatar f tn I have herpes and have for approx 9 years now. I have kept it under control with once a day valtrex. I honestly can't even remember the last time I had an outbreak. My partner was very accepting of this and we've been together 7 years now, married 3. I'm currently 37 weeks pregnant. I have, of course, discussed these concerns with my doctor, but with most things I've read it says your doc will do a culture before you deliver to make sure you don't have any lesions.
Avatar f tn Hi! How far along are you? Congrats on the pregnancy! Valtrex is typically considered safe during pregnancy! Women even use it for long term suppression therapy for genital herpes without any issues.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
Avatar m tn t mention if you are being prescribed the Viagra, and I know that some men take it themselves to last longer, and not because they have ED. If you fall into this category, try not taking it and seeing if it stops the outbreak frequency. (If you fall into this category, you might want to consider talking to your doctor about taking it, since it can cause cardiac side effects. Make sure it's safe for you to take.) Are you on a suppressive medication, like valtrex or acyclovir?
Avatar f tn On the app instead of clicking on recomended forums go to all medical support community forums and it will be in alphabetical order. Make a post and from then on the breastfeeding forum will show up in the my forums section of the app. I hope this makes sense. It's very easy once you figure it out.
Avatar f tn Check drugs.com for what category Valtrex falls under - that'll give you some info although you should go by your dr's recommendations.
Avatar f tn if I may just have vaginal irritation from the constant moisture and contact with blood? Valtrex is category B and since.I have it on hand should I increase my dosing to head this off, I work for a doctor and we usually prescribe 5qd for 5/days..... any advice?
Avatar n tn I am now 36.5 weeks pregnant and just started to take generic valtrex for suppression for delivery just to be extra safe and cautious. What is the earliest time I can stop taking it so I can start breastfeeding my newborn? I do not want him to drink valtrex! Also, is it completely necessary to take it since I have not seen any recurrent outbreaks?
Avatar f tn My obgyn told me it was ok to take the Valtrex during pregnancy but we never discussed breastfeeding. Thanks for your previous answers. They were helpful.
Avatar n tn I just read a question posted by someone that had herpes in more than one place...this can absolutely happen, mine after three years, decided to move down the nerve to a new place on my lower back. Though I have hsv-2 , my lesions have always been on regular skin, and no where else, and yes, this is tested, and true. I began valtex suppressive ther 500mg 2x a day, and where before, I could feel herpes coming on ie: leg pain back pain, etc...
Avatar f tn Hansfield for your reply. I am also concerned about breastfeeding and taking the Valtrex. How would it affect the baby? Thank you again.
Avatar m tn I am having a really bad cold sore outbreak (getting one right after the other), so I finally asked my doctor for Valtrex. He prescribed 1000 mg a day for 7 days to clear it all up. I am looking online though, and it looks like the normal dosage is 2000 mg a day, twice a day, for one day. I am confused, and the doctor's office will be closed until Monday. Anyone know anything about the dosage I was given and if it will be effective?
Avatar f tn I was prescribed Amoxicillin for one of my wisdom teeth I had extrated yesterday which is Category B medication. I'm not taking the Category C which is Tylenol with Codeine which doesn't do harm but is advise just to stay away from. Category B has no harm to the baby I'm assuming your medication should be just fine. Being a nurse I had to look up these things. Look up what category the medication is and do research on what the categories mean.
Avatar f tn I got Valtrex and its gone now, but my period must come any time and I am scared to get it again as I am still breastfeeding and dont want to take Valtrex again. Anyone has some experience with it? Is it very bad for the baby? I started to read about herpes genitales and found out that you can transmit it also without sores and even the condom doesnt help. So I dont dare to have sex with my husband any more. We are together for 7 years and he has nothing.
1983217 tn?1327607298 That's what I wasn't sure about. I knew it wasn't "bleach". I figured it may be in the category with dying your hair, fake nails ect where some say its ok some don't.
Avatar f tn ve never been on it but I googled it and it said it cannot harm an unborn baby, but not to use it during breastfeeding because it can pass to the baby through the milk and may harm a nursing baby. But during pregnancy it is fine.
Avatar m tn Also, Grace had told me (in another thread) that it is generally accepted as ok to take Valtrex as suppressive therapy in pregnancy. It is classified as a category B drug. And I know some OBs are ok with the mother continuing to take the drug.
Avatar f tn Any new moms having problems with breastfeeding? My daughter is 2 weeks old and my milk supply is still low when I pump it's only 1oz from both breast sometimes less so I had to put her on formula which breaks my heart because I wanted to exclusively breastfeed for 3 months and then do both when I go back to work but I had no choice.
Avatar f tn The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that show side effects to the fetus in animal studies, but no human studies in pregnant women have been done.
898043 tn?1262496985 Is everyone breastfeeding?? Does anyone think breastfeeding is a bad idea if i have to go back to work and school after the six weeks are up? Can i breastfeed and bottle feed? thanks ladies!!
Avatar m tn So, they put me on Valtrex, but it still took like 2 weeks for everything to clear up. After I used all the Valtrex, I never took any other meds, and the problem went away for 5 years. Now, Monday of this week, my urethra started hurting when pissing. I went in had test for gonarea, chlymidia, syphilis, as well as urine culture, everything comes back negative. I've been on zovirax 5x a day since Monday, symptoms aren't getting worse, but not better either.
Avatar f tn if you take daily suppressive therapy with valtrex, avoid sex during obvious symptoms and use condoms, your partner would be 99% likely each year NOT to contract hsv2 from you. It's really low odds and never a reason to end a relationship. do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally?
Avatar f tn I used to work for a biotech company (and one of our drugs was rated Pregnancy Category X). This category applies to pregnancy specifically, and means the risks outweigh the benefits and should NOT be given to pregnant women. Please see links below. I also have been freaking out because my dr. has me on estradiol and I've begged him to take me off them because of these concerns. I've considered going off of them on my own.
