Valtrex and breastfeeding

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex and breastfeeding

valtrex

Avatar n tn I am now 36.5 weeks pregnant and just started to take generic valtrex for suppression for delivery just to be extra safe and cautious. What is the earliest time I can stop taking it so I can start breastfeeding my newborn? I do not want him to drink valtrex! Also, is it completely necessary to take it since I have not seen any recurrent outbreaks?
Avatar f tn I just had another outbreak and am in the 4th day of Valtrex and the sores and pain are gone but the tingling is still there. Am I growing resistant to the Valtrex or does anyone think this will ever slow down?
Avatar f tn A fertility doctor (because we had problems getting pregnant) and then my regular OB once we finally did get pregnant and they both told me it was ok to continue taking the valtrex. And even now my regular OB is telling me to just stick with 500mg/day for the duration. I'm so confused.......................and now worried.
Avatar f tn Hansfield for your reply. I am also concerned about breastfeeding and taking the Valtrex. How would it affect the baby? Thank you again.
Avatar m tn Hi, for valtrex as below per Terri Warren: You can view this and other helpful information in her "Updated herpes handbook" Westover Hieghts web site. 1. first time outbreaks 1000 mg twice a day for ten days. 2. recurrent outbreaks 2 grams twice a day, 12 hours apart. she also advises that is no longer necessary to take this medicine for more thatn one day for greatest benefit. 3. suppression 1000 mg once a day for people who have 10 or more outbreaks per year.
Avatar f tn I got Valtrex and its gone now, but my period must come any time and I am scared to get it again as I am still breastfeeding and dont want to take Valtrex again. Anyone has some experience with it? Is it very bad for the baby? I started to read about herpes genitales and found out that you can transmit it also without sores and even the condom doesnt help. So I dont dare to have sex with my husband any more. We are together for 7 years and he has nothing.
Avatar n tn most folks who do, experience it initially when diagnosed and go on valtrex and are incredibly stressed. for most , it does come back. I do know of less than a handful of folks who experienced hair loss while on valtrex, they could find no other cause for it and even after stopping the valtrex the hair loss did not stop. at this point continue to follow up on this with the dermatologist. they are your best bet.
Avatar m tn acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day every single day. she will still get recurrences while on daily suppressive therapy regardless of if she's on acyclovir or valtrex, you just take acyclovir more often than you do valtrex.
Avatar f tn After I posted this I talked to the hospital doc about my negativ test result. She didnt think Valtrex had interferred with the results. I have had "herpes symptoms" four months, taking Valtrex last four weeks. Maybe I could have a new test taken in a couple of weeks when my system is clear of Valtrex? Just to be on the safe side? Just no it is all too confusing. One doc says: HERPES! The other says: no this is not herpes.
1302779 tn?1287405029 i have generic valtrex but i also have chronic migraine and i feel the valtrex gives me a headache. do u get side effects from valtrex?
Avatar n tn Thanks for the reply. Well if valtrex doesnt affect the results, wouldnt 55days be enough for conclusion? As doctors say 6weeks is quite enough for antihiv tests except cemotherapy patients?
Avatar n tn Finally I broke down and in seeking relief on four ocassions and took 2000 mgs of Valtrex and awoke syptom free only to have the symptoms return the following evening. It seemed to help for a short period. Since I had nearly nine months straight without suppressive therapy would it be OK to take the WB now? It has been 26 months since the initial episode. In total I have had at least 11 months without suppressive therapy which includes the first nine months of possible infection.
Avatar m tn If I stop it for a week do I wait to see if symptoms persist? If not begin again, or ask my doctor for an alternative? If so what should I be asking for and are they as effective as Valtrex? Thank you.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
Avatar f tn I recently was diagnosed with Herpes I've yet to go get a blood test done but I was put on Valtrex. I was so scared that I went and bout an Oraquick test I tested negative, two days later I still couldn't get it out of my mind and went and got two more tests while on Valtrex and all three said Negative. I know this question is asked over and over but, are my test conclusive even on Valtrex? My last exposure was 9 months ago if that wasn't clarified?
Avatar n tn s office and it came back negative. I am also on Valtrex for herpes. Can valtrex effect the results, should i retest again?
Avatar f tn ve been taking 500mg of Valtrex every night and plan to do so for the next year to year and a half as suggested by my doctor. I have had no other outbreaks since the first one. My doctor explained to me that taking Valtrex on a regimen would help the virus become dormant. I was wondering what that meant specifically in terms of my likelihood of transmitting the virus to sexual partners with or without condoms.
1713150 tn?1314467342 By the way, my suppressive therapy dose is 500 mg valtrex (the generic of valtrex) 2x daily. So... after the 1st and only outbreak I was taking 1,000 mg 2x daily.
Avatar m tn I will talk to my OB, but I was wanting the opinion of others on this board - if I stop taking the 1 gram daily dose, is it possible my body will have developed a dependence on the Valtrex and outbreaks will run amuck again? Or, should I theoretically revert to the same number/pattern of outbreaks that I had prior to beginning the suppressive therapy (which although the outbreaks were numerous in the first 3 months after my son's birth, they had been infrequent before then)?
Avatar f tn I had never heard of the one day dose until now. just went and looked it up and will definitely try that on the day of my infusion and when I have my next outbreak. that is so much more convenient.
Avatar m tn HSV-1 is less susceptible to Valtrex and related drugs, so the necessary dose is unknown and might be higher than for HSV-2. Also, asymptomatic shedding is less common with oral HSV-1 than genital HSV-2. Finally, the main strategy for protecting your partner probably should be for him or her to be tested for HSV-1. There is a 50-50 chance of a positive result, in which case s/he is not susceptible and you need take no precautions at all. To the specific questions: 1,3) Answered above.
Avatar f tn Since finding out I've contracted Herpes the area around my vagina has been swollen and I've also had a lot of bleeding which has been like a heavy period and lasted well over a week, nearly 2. I took Valtrex which stopped the bleeding so I assumed it was related to Herpes. But I have just finished a course of Valtrex and am bleeding again. At first I assumed it was my period but it's been heavy bleeding for a good few days now. I am also very itchy.
Avatar f tn 13 weeks pregnant, FTM. I've had herpes over 10 years. I had two outbreaks in the first trimester. At doc appointment yesterday, Dr. said that's too many, and put me on 500mg valtrex daily for suppressive treatment. I thought baby was safe from contracting it while in the womb, and was only at risk during vaginal birth, but Dr. said that babies CAN contract herpes in utero. I'm worried sick now about it, and cried after my appointment.
Avatar m tn Can I take another dose today or do I have to wait a couple of days? I have a big meeting coming up and next week and and starting to freak out but dont want to OD and have some weird side affect.
