valtrex and side effects

Is there any other treatment for recurrent herpes besides acyclovir and valtrex? I have never taken valtrex but have read that they are the same thing. I feel so bloated, tired and dizzy while on acyclovir. My dr said we could try valtrex...but if it's the same, what's the point? Any other people with similar side effects that found solutions?

I too had side effects such as fatigue, extreme selectivity to taste and smell and aggression and then other side effects appeared on my second round of antiviral that were not classified as side effects by my doctor, but stopped once I was off Valtrex after 7 days. These other side effects were memory loss and cognitive difficulty, slurring speech, liver pain, and momentary "blips" or blackouts.These disappeared within a few days of being off the antiviral.

valtrex and acyclovir have the same basic side effects. Valtrex is turned into acyclovir inside the body.

Are you having side effects? Or you just want to know if side effects are possible? Side effects are possible with any drug.

Thanks. I have started daily Valtrex to reduce the risk of transmission to him. After much discussion, he has agreed, reluctantly, to find out his status. If he's positive for HSV 2, I'll discontinue the med. If he's negative I will keep taking it. I got your book recently and will I'm sure get a lot of information (and much needed strategies for getting my head around this) from the book. Two final questions for you: 1.

I have been on valtrex for suppression of hsv 2 for 16yrs and continue to have outbreaks almost monthly. Sores in vaginal area are less noticeable but other symptoms such as fatigue, headache, swollen glands, back pain still persist. My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it.

only problem it that it elevated my liver enzymes which is not a good thing. Doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex and only take it if I absolutely need it, ie wedding, meeting, ect.

It does bother me that's why I'm asking how good does it suppress the virus?

The side effects are too severe to continue on Valtrex. Dr. said to try acyclovir, but research shows it has the same ingredients only in lower milligram strength. Has anyone, who couldn't tolerate Valtrex, have success with acyclovir?

why not try famvir 2x/day suppressively and see if you tolerate that better?

Valtrex is not as effective on hsv1 as it is on hsv2. Does your boyfriend know whether or not he is positive for hsv1? There is a good chance he is already infected and doesn't know it If he is not infected, does he know that he can get an hsv1 infection by receiving oral sex from you? If so, he is an adult and making that decision with complete knowledge.

My understanding is that based on my Genitial HSV-1 diagnosis, I should never have another outbreak (or at least very few) and that I am at an extremely low risk of spreading the virus through shedding. Valtrex is outrageously expensive costing me and my HMO about $375 per month. Also, I am worried about the side effects of the drug. Lately I have started to feel rather depressed, something very new to me.

ve been taking 500mg of Valtrex every night and plan to do so for the next year to year and a half as suggested by my doctor. I have had no other outbreaks since the first one. My doctor explained to me that taking Valtrex on a regimen would help the virus become dormant. I was wondering what that meant specifically in terms of my likelihood of transmitting the virus to sexual partners with or without condoms.

I too have been in Valtrex for suppressive therapy. My hair is falling out and thinning really bad. It is a side effect of the medication. Wishing there was something to take to make it stop. But if I stop the anti viral I break out all the time. It's frustrating!

acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day every single day. she will still get recurrences while on daily suppressive therapy regardless of if she's on acyclovir or valtrex, you just take acyclovir more often than you do valtrex.

no reason to see a doctor - these are common side effects from the medication. They should've given you info on this when you had your prescription filled at the pharmacy. It's best to take the larger doses like this with food. You should feel better by tomorrow.

NOT a cooincidence. i started taking SSRIs a while back and my rarely occurring outbreaks became frequent. i didn't like the side effects, made me apathetic and tired, so i stopped taking them, and lo and behold, the outbreaks went away. some time after that i started taking an over the counter 5-htp supplement which essentially converts to serotonin and the same thing happened - more outbreaks. stopped because i didn't like the same side effects as the SSRIs.

docs hand them out like candy; there will be no adverse side-effects if negative- just discontinue use. Valtrex does not normally cause any of these symptoms; stress does.

I have only i bump on the side of the top of the crack of my butt,dr did a culture called me told me its herpes simplex virus and told me to take valtrex i took 1 pill last night and this morning i feel kinda wierd like my right eye is all messed up and side of my face feels burning i also feel nauseated and very dizzy.im afraid to take more of the med as im home alone,i have bad anxiety..
