Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex and outbreaks

valtrex

Avatar m tn happy new year i read last night on article online stating that a person on suppresive therapy will eventually have a resistance to the medicine and outbreaks will be longer and more painful, although any of mine were never painful at all and i have been on suppressive therapy for a year now with very good success
Avatar f tn Not much is known about hsv1 genital but we do know that after the initial infection, 40% had no recurrent outbreaks and 50% had 1 or 2 outbreaks then none. The remaining 5-10% were similar to hsv2. Bottom line is recurrent outbreaks for hsv1 genital are not common so you might reconsider being on suppressive meds. Most are for hsv 2 genital.
Avatar f tn I am trying to figure out how to minimize outbreaks (I seem to get one after every infusion) I am currently on generic valtrex which I had only been taking for outbreaks. I looked up the standard dosing for prevention of outbreaks but that doesnt seem to keep them at bay either. I cant stop getting th remicade so are there any suggestions as to what I can do?
Avatar n tn I am also on Valtrex and I continue to get outbreaks but they last for a few days and then go away for weeks, sometimes months before I get another. My spouse who also has herpes does not take an antiviral so that is why I believe I still get my outbreaks. Are you still engaging in intercourse while having outbreaks, maybe that is whey they aren't getting better. Also, I'm not sure what famvir is, but maybe it is stronger than Valtrex and will help you.
Avatar f tn I have been on valtrex for suppression of hsv 2 for 16yrs and continue to have outbreaks almost monthly. Sores in vaginal area are less noticeable but other symptoms such as fatigue, headache, swollen glands, back pain still persist. My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it.
Avatar m tn I found out 3yrs ago I had genital herpes. Since then I have had more and more outbreaks. I was taking Valtex when I would feel the onset and it would help(about twice a month) I then decieded to start taking it daily and have been for the last yr. I still have the itching, redness, soreness, anal itching and some surface sores even though I was taking the Valtrex daily. My insurance will not cover the Valtrex so now I am taking Valacyclovir(1 gram) daily. Do I need to take it twice a day?
494623 tn?1278279352 d long since forgotten about and was pretty shocked by this diagnosis because although my Doctor must have known it was G Herpes way back then he did not tell me he simply prescribed Aciclovar and I thought no more about it not knowing anything about Genital Herpes at that time and never having had a Genital Outbreak, all through 2006 I had maybe 2 small outbreaks which I thought nothing of I just thought it was that annoying little rash the Doctor had already seen and he didn't say it as any
1628163 tn?1299535389 She put me on valtrex it seems like the valtrex shortened the outbreaks but i have tingling every day and i dont know why. and I still have outbreaks, so why is this?
Avatar f tn You may also want to talk to your doctor about going on valtrex or acyclovir daily to help prevent outbreaks. If you are getting frequent outbreaks, and they take weeks to heal, have your doctor do some testing to make sure you don't have a secondary infection, like yeast or bacterial vaginitis if you are female, or another STD.
Avatar f tn The daily suppressive therapy are the ones that I will have to take every day for the rest of my life right? do you know how much they cost? are they expensive like the valtrex? and also. I have been this burning sensation for about 2 days. Could that be linked to the herpes virus. can how can i reduce the burning sensation I tired the epson salt bath and it works for a little while and stops.
Avatar f tn Why do i get so many outbreaks? when i was first diagnosed 2 years ago i would get a reoccurence every 2-3 months. now i get it every 3-4 weeks, why is this happening? shouldnt outbreaks decrease over time? another thing i only take valtrex when i am having an outbreak 1 tab twice a say for 5 days.
Avatar f tn s I was getting outbreaks twice in a month or every month so I was prescribed 1gm of valtrex daily dosage. which would help for the most part and brought my outbreaks down to none or once a year again. but recently I have been getting outbreaks once a month it started out as fever blisters every month now this month I have a cold sore. I am at my wit's end and did everything to prevent an outbreak. I took two valtrex, three lysine and applied abreva.
Avatar m tn I know a lot of people have atypical outbreaks and probably are having sex (while on Valtrex) while they have outbreaks and just don't realize they are having one. Is this a likely contributing thing to the 1:1000 exposures risk? I know the studies show that people who take the meds and avoid having sex during outbreaks have low rates of transmission-but would it be feasible that they had sex at times they didn't know of outbreaks occuring?
Avatar m tn From 2010 onwards I was getting outbreaks almost every month, I had 6 outbreaks in the first 8 months of 2010 and so decided to go on suppressive therapy (500mg/day). This has stopped the outbreaks but I occassionally (every 6 months) stop taking the suppressive therapy to see if I can start going without it.... I can't. I get an o/b within a week or two of stopping the valtrex.
1302779 tn?1287405029 i have generic valtrex but i also have chronic migraine and i feel the valtrex gives me a headache. do u get side effects from valtrex?
Avatar m tn 7 out of the ten I was on valtrex and rarely had outbreaks. The past 3 yrs have been a nightmare I have not been on meds and I get constant outbreaks. Its consumming my life. What else can I do to reduce the outbreaks without getting on meds?
Avatar m tn My wife has genital herpes and is treated daily with Valtrex and she has been outbreak free for well over a year. We have been together for 3 years and have never used condoms and I am still Herpes free. My questions deal with the possibility of contracting Genital Herpes when there is no outbreak. 1) What is the risk of contracting Genital Herpes between outbreaks through oral sex? 2) What is the risk of spreading the condition to others by giving or recieving oral sex between outbreaks?
Avatar n tn If the pain goes away, try acyclovir or famvir and see if you tolerate either of those better. there are some folks who get neuralgia from valtrex especially and trial and error is the only way to figure it out. If you still have the pains after a week off valtrex, it's probably not related to your herpes or the valtrex so you'll need to follow up on it with your doctor.
Avatar f tn Pregnancy has (as you know) a profound effect on the body. From hormone imbalance to physical trauma and stress. Which all can effect the number of outbreaks one gets. I know it's frustrating and Valtrex will lessen the outbreaks and length. If you were not on it your outbreaks would most likely be even more frequent. It may take more time for your body to regulate back to what it was before pregnancy. I also would suggest going to the asha website and reach out to Terri Warren.
Avatar f tn Also genital hsv1 rarely reoccurs and being on valtrex would certainly lower outbreaks even more.It would appear that your doctor is correct that its not herpes but without knowing for sure it would be best not to expose the baby during the birthing process. Im sure youll have the test results back before your time.
Avatar f tn I have HSV2 diagnosed in November 2009. I had outbreaks beginning about June 2008, though I can't say for sure that is when I contracted herpes. I have had an out break, ulilateral on my right buttock, about every 30 days beginning this past November. I take Valtrex (500 g?) 2x a day for 3 days. The blisters clear up pretty quickly, I also use Zovirax cream to help with the itching.
Avatar n tn My understanding is that based on my Genitial HSV-1 diagnosis, I should never have another outbreak (or at least very few) and that I am at an extremely low risk of spreading the virus through shedding. Valtrex is outrageously expensive costing me and my HMO about $375 per month. Also, I am worried about the side effects of the drug. Lately I have started to feel rather depressed, something very new to me.
Avatar m tn Ive also been tested for HIV so I know thats not an issue and I protect myself while having sex. But I think there may be a correlation between using viagra and my outbreaks. Any ideas?
Avatar f tn I'm experiencing Menopause and it seems my outbreaks are worse. Does this get better over time?
Avatar m tn NOT a cooincidence. i started taking SSRIs a while back and my rarely occurring outbreaks became frequent. i didn't like the side effects, made me apathetic and tired, so i stopped taking them, and lo and behold, the outbreaks went away. some time after that i started taking an over the counter 5-htp supplement which essentially converts to serotonin and the same thing happened - more outbreaks. stopped because i didn't like the same side effects as the SSRIs.
