Valacyclovir treatment

Common Questions and Answers about Valacyclovir treatment

valtrex

Avatar n tn My question is, can Valacyclovir be taken as a preventative measure if I take it a few days in advance of the big event? If so, what dosage? Thanks.
Avatar f tn And although recurrent outbreaks can occur while taking valacyclovir, they are rare -- and monthly is unheard of. It is possible your HSV has become resistant to the drug, but that's quite rare as well. As for valacyclovir side effects, you needn't worry.
Avatar f tn Seven days ago I started an episodic treatment of 1g valacyclovir for 10 days because I started to get my second cold sore only a week and a half after my primary outbreak had healed. However, this evening I noticed some warning signs, and sure enough I have two or more blisters forming around my mouth and one blister in my genitals. (I was diagnosed with HSV 1 of the mouth and genitals). Why did I get an outbreak when I'm already on the outbreak medicine? How common is this occurence?
Avatar m tn t understand herpes. Anti-herpes treatment will not have any effect on the index value of your HSV2 blood test. If you have a regular sex partner, she (or he) should have a blood test. If positive for either virus, s/he is alfeady infected with thate HSV type and, can't catch it again.
Avatar m tn You have seriously overreacted to a minimal risk situation. Your actions, especially in your inappropriate treatment with valacyclovir -- which did absolutely nothing to prevent herpes but, as you suggest, could interfere with finding out whether you were infected. I would estimate the chance you caught herpes form the exposure described as well under 1 chance in 1,000, maybe as low as 1 in 100,000. It was wrong of your doctor to agree to your reqeust for valacyclovir treatment.
Avatar m tn 1) I have the beginnings of a cold sore on the lip. For Valacyclovir and Valtrex the recommended dosage is 2000mg every 12 hours...total of 4000mg in 24 hours. I have 2000mg of Valtrex and 2000mg Valacyclovir from prior outbreaks. Can I take them together for the some effect? Or do I need to take the 4000mg total dose with the same drug? 2) I am getting cold sores on the lip up to 3 times a year. There is no common catalyst. Each outbreak if not treated early is as severe as all the rest.
Avatar f tn In the absence of suppressive treatment with valacyclovir, I continue to have genital outbreaks anywhere from every 6-12 weeks. I recently stopped all treatment and validated that I still get moderately severe outbreaks every 6 - 12 weeks. I have not other health issues and exercise regularly. I also avoid all of the "suspect" foods (i.e.: nuts, chocolate, etc.) I understand that recurrent genital outbreaks of HSV 1 are extremely rare, particularly this long after diagnosis.
Avatar m tn consistent condom use; and taking anti-herpes suppressive therapy like valacyclovir. Genital to oral transmission is uncommon, but could occur. However, if it's HSV-1, the risk of transmission (for either genital or oral sex) probably is quite low. Also, has your partner been tested to determine for sure whether she has genital herpes? She could be tested to learn whether she is susceptible to HSV-1 or HSV-2, or perhaps previously infected and therefore immune to a new infection.
Avatar m tn t know if he did any additional test to tell if it was HSV1 or 2. This was about a month 1/2 ago. He prescribed Valacyclovir which I have taken when the lesions start to form, but it does not seem to work very well. What other medications or creams can be used to shrink the lesions faster? Also, I may be paranoid but I've noticed some nuisance type itching in the anal area and sometimes on the crotch.
Avatar n tn I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, that you weren't snooping -- i.e., you ran into your partner's valacyclovir (Valtrex) prescription by accident. The majority of valacyclovir prescriptions are written for genital herpes. However, it is also prescribed frequently for oral herpes; or perhaps somewhere along the line she had an outbreak of herpes zoster (shingles). But for the rest of this reply let's assume she has genital herpes.
Avatar m tn It started with one sore - I immediately went to the doctor who prescribed me again with a short valacyclovir treatment. The outbreak only got worse - over a month later, my first sore is still there and 3 other sores have appeared since then, as well as some other in the pubic area (which i'm not sure are herpes or something else).
Avatar f tn I talk valacyclovir for herpes out breaks I have a high dosage one for when I get them it doesn't harm the baby. Though this is my first pregnancy and I'm 7 weeks. They told me once I get closer to my due date to take them daily so there is no break out.
Avatar n tn t want it there so I started to take Valacyclovir it would keep breaking out every month or so I went on a daily maintenance of 500mg a day. When ever I would miss a pill I start feeling the sensation which I felt when I was going to get an outbreak. I would keep taking it for 5 years. I wanted to stop taking it so I had read some Medical Article's online that Valtrex can rebound.
Avatar m tn I'm not sure that I understand your response. 1. I think that you meant to say that "experience tells us that when people ?quit? taking the valacyclovir, they sometimes do have an outbreak soon after that." This is my concern, that the valacyclovir takes over and that the body's immune response is less engaged in fighting the infection. Do you see what I mean? 2.
Avatar m tn Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear of your friend's unpleasant and traumatic experience. Please wish her well for me. First, there is no mis-diagnosis. A positive culture for HSV is definitive, so there is no doubt she has genital herpes due to HSV-2. However, I am not certain she has a new infection acquired during the sexual assault.
Avatar m tn Welcome back to the forum. Congratulations to both you and your partner for your forthright, common-sense approach to your past warts and her HSV-2 infection. Among monogamous couples in which one person has HSV-2, who take no measures to prevent transmission except avoiding sex during symptomatic outbreaks, and who have unprotected sex an average of 2-3 times per week, transmission to the uninfected partner occurs in about 5% of couples per year.
Avatar n tn As such I contacted my doctor and was prescribed valacyclovir hcl which I took (2 1 gram tablets twice daily). The cold sore remained small and eventually went away. After this I went 1-2 days without taking any Lysine or valacyclovir and on the second day I noticed the cold sore coming back again and now appears to have come back and crusted over. I did not think the new cold sore was actually one but then it crusted over.
Avatar m tn I was first diagnosed with genital herpes on 02/19/13 I was having my first outbreak it was just at the base of my penis exactly where my penis starts and my pubic area ends. I was prescribed with valacyclovir 500mg twice a day for 5 days, by the third day the scabs where dry and I had no pain so the treatment worked. Just 4 days ago I started to feel itchiness on the same area and it was a few small blisters so the next day I started again the same treatment, the same dosage.
Avatar m tn how were you originally diagnosed? what are your symptoms now?
Avatar m tn It is true that anti-herpes drugs can delay antibody development, but even without treatment with valacyclovir, 30 days is often too soon for antibodies to appear. At this point, my advice is that your partner stop taking any valacyclovir, and that he have another HSV blood test (IgG only, not IgM) about 3-4 months after his symptoms started (2-3 months from now). I think it will remain negative.
Avatar f tn I went back with my gyn and started a valacyclovir treatment that has been working very well, the sore has almost disapeared, but my adenopathy has not changed at all. My question is: When will the swollen inguinal lymph nodes heal? will the situation change when the hsv sore heals? or will my body keep the inmuno-struggle with the virus? when should i start worrying for my non healed adenopathy?
Avatar f tn A herpes outbreak certainly could show up like this. And although valacyclovir (Valtrex) is quite effective in preventing outbreaks, it isn't perfect; outbreaks sometimes occur when on treatment. On the other hand, herpes outbreaks almost never last more than a few days, especially when on treatment -- so most likely the soreness is something else. Most important, though, is that you show this to your obsetrician, and also discuss it with him or her if you go into labor.
