Valacyclovir symptoms

Common Questions and Answers about Valacyclovir symptoms

valtrex

Avatar f tn I have been on valtrex for suppression of hsv 2 for 16yrs and continue to have outbreaks almost monthly. Sores in vaginal area are less noticeable but other symptoms such as fatigue, headache, swollen glands, back pain still persist. My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it.
Avatar m tn Was it your first outbreak that was severe (your post is not clear) and if so, I would point out that recurrences typically are far milder than initial outbreaks. Antihistamines of the sort you describe might reduce symptoms related to valacyclovir but first I would want to be sure that the symptoms you are concerned about would occur and would be due to the VCV. I've asked you several questions. Perhaps I can add more once you have answered them.
Avatar m tn I also believe I caught HSV-1 genitally about four weeks ago or less... My symptoms were never more than a blister that appeared on my lips and also on my genitals, but they never burst or popped... Just the common symptoms - tingling, itching... However, on my genitals it seems to be a bit more painful... I have been using a transdermal oxygem cream which GREATLY reduces the discomfort and the rising of the white 'blisters.
Avatar f tn Would acute HIV ever present like this, acute outbreak of symptoms, disappear for a week, then recurr? Could the valacyclovir have masked the effects of acute HIV one I started taking it? should I be looking at bacterial causes? Please help with opinions. I need to make the right next steps with my health care providers. Everyone wants to tke a wait And see approach but I want to take charge of it.
Avatar m tn Then I started taking 500mg Valacyclovir (M191) daily and that helped me a lot. I would maybe get 1 out break a year and the sore would be very small & heal fast. I am also taking Lysine pills everyday. 1000mg to 2000mg a day. Last week, I had some redness on my penis and didn't really think anything of it. 2-3 days later 2 small scabs showed up on the same spot on my penis and they fell off within the next 4 days.
Avatar n tn I have been experiencing all-over-body nerve tingling for about 10 months now, after a strangely over the top outbreak of cold sores (HSV1) on my chin, nose & upper lip - the nerve tingling happens: scalp, ears, eyelids, nose, temples, armpits, arms, hands, groin, knees, feet, all over the place. Normally, throughout my teenage years, I would just get a single cold sore on one lip, thought nothing of it, but this outbreak had multiple small spots, lasted longer, and they were quite painful.
Avatar f tn This is all just guesswork until you get professionally reexamined. I repeat my opinion that herpes isn't the cause of your symptoms, and I doubt increasing the amount of valacyclovir will make a difference. In fact, you should probably stop it entirely until you have seen your doctor.
Avatar f tn I talk valacyclovir for herpes out breaks I have a high dosage one for when I get them it doesn't harm the baby. Though this is my first pregnancy and I'm 7 weeks. They told me once I get closer to my due date to take them daily so there is no break out.
Avatar n tn t want it there so I started to take Valacyclovir it would keep breaking out every month or so I went on a daily maintenance of 500mg a day. When ever I would miss a pill I start feeling the sensation which I felt when I was going to get an outbreak. I would keep taking it for 5 years. I wanted to stop taking it so I had read some Medical Article's online that Valtrex can rebound.
Avatar m tn I'm not sure that I understand your response. 1. I think that you meant to say that "experience tells us that when people ?quit? taking the valacyclovir, they sometimes do have an outbreak soon after that." This is my concern, that the valacyclovir takes over and that the body's immune response is less engaged in fighting the infection. Do you see what I mean? 2.
Avatar f tn I believe (though I could be wrong) valacyclovir is the only drug that is approved by the FDA for suppressive therapy, because it's the only drug that has had an FDA registered clinical trial performed for this purpose. However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus.
Avatar m tn So it has now been exactly 1 week since I noticed symptoms 2.5 days after exposure. I went back to my dermatologist and he did not think it to be herpes. But gave me a prescription for Valtrex as suppressive therapy until I can take a reliable blood test in 2 and 3 months. I know that everyone has different symptoms for genital herpes and I feel like I have some. Thoughts?
Avatar f tn Sorry you're having such a difficult time. It is very common for one partner in a relationship to have herpes and for it not to be transmitted to the other partner for many months or even years. Many husbands or wives of infected persons never catch it. So even if you have new herpes, it doesn't indicate either of you has had other partners. You are on a lower than usual dose of acyclovir for initial herpes which might explain why the symptoms aren't improving yet.
Avatar m tn You have seriously overreacted to a minimal risk situation. Your actions, especially in your inappropriate treatment with valacyclovir -- which did absolutely nothing to prevent herpes but, as you suggest, could interfere with finding out whether you were infected. I would estimate the chance you caught herpes form the exposure described as well under 1 chance in 1,000, maybe as low as 1 in 100,000. It was wrong of your doctor to agree to your reqeust for valacyclovir treatment.
Avatar n tn As such I contacted my doctor and was prescribed valacyclovir hcl which I took (2 1 gram tablets twice daily). The cold sore remained small and eventually went away. After this I went 1-2 days without taking any Lysine or valacyclovir and on the second day I noticed the cold sore coming back again and now appears to have come back and crusted over. I did not think the new cold sore was actually one but then it crusted over.
Avatar m tn Is it possible that my diligence in taking three courses of Valacyclovir on the first onset of symptoms on the second, third and fourth outbreak symptoms could have weakened the virus to a point where my immune system did not detect and have to fight; and hence produce any antibodies yet? Or could it be that I have HSV I genitally that I gave to myself masturbating in March after having it orally for 10 years?
Avatar m tn Second, the on and off symptoms, and apparent improvement with valacyclovir, argues strongly against herpes. Herpes symptoms cannot come and go within hours or a day or two; and anti-herpes drugs like valacyclovir do not improve pain so quickly, in any dose. Their effect takes at least 2-3 days to get started. Any apparent benefit from individual doses almost certainly is a placebo effect.
Avatar f tn I was recently tested positive (need to get retested) and am having trouble telling if I have symptoms or not. My boyfriend says I'm being paranoid. I have 10 small red painless non-itchy bumps on the left side of vagina (not on the moist part at all) and the gyno told me it was folliculitis. I had a very tiny bump inside my cheek a few weeks ago and the again today in my bottom inner lip. I am under a lot of stress right now so I don't know if that's related.
Avatar m tn I am already diagnosed with HSV-2 and take Valacyclovir (Valtrex) 500mg daily. After some reading online, it seems that this medication may delay the HIV seroconversion. Does this mean that HIV symptoms would also be delayed or minimized? I understand that I will not be sure until I take an HIV test, but I am hoping for some peace of mind until I get tested at the 3 month mark.
Avatar m tn At this time, in addition to continuing your valacyclovir, there is little to do other than take symptomatic treatment and wait this out. On valacyclovir there is little benefit to viral culture or PCR. Should the symptoms get worse, you may wish to seek the advice of your doctor to make sure this is not a bacterial infection. I hope my comments are helpful.
