Common Questions and Answers about What is valtrex valacyclovir symptoms

valtrex

Avatar f tn My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it. Anyone else have similar experience or advice? Thanks!
Avatar m tn Hello, Dr's. I have been reading a lot and am a bit perplexed. Last Friday night I had unprotected sex with a female. I awoke Monday morning and noticed 2 red bumps on my upper left thigh (1 larger than the other), 3 small bumps in my pubic region (2 of which looked like zits with white heads), some reddish/flesh colored bumps beginning to arise on the shaft of my penis.
Avatar n tn My story is I contracted HSV2 on the back of my left thigh in the late 1990's not sure where, but it breakout once a year during summer months one time a year. While it was annoying I didn't take anything during the late 2000's I somehow transferred it to my face (confirmed by swab). I didn't want it there so I started to take Valacyclovir it would keep breaking out every month or so I went on a daily maintenance of 500mg a day.
Avatar f tn However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus. If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir.
Avatar m tn "...are you saying that if he had contracted herpes from being exposed to me, the initial breakout would have happened anyway even with taking the Valtrex to stop it?" Probably yes. The symptoms might be milder, but maybe not much. What is known for sure is that taking valtrex (or other anti-herpes drugs) does not prevent HSV infections unless taken before exposure. Even a 1 hour delay after exposure does not prevent infection from taking hold.
Avatar f tn yes and no. Valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug. what that means if you swallow valtrex and your body changes it into acyclovir inside your body. Because of that unique delivery method, you get more active acyclovir available to fight the herpes virus when it's active so you take it less often. The main difference in the two of them is convenience and of course price.
Avatar n tn Generic valacyclovir is equally effective as the Valtrex brand. If it isn't working, it suggests that the problem isn't herpes. Probably the best approach at this point is to promptly (within a couple of days) get professionally examined to confirm the diagnosis of the current problem. I'm not necessarily doubting that you have genital herpes, just questioning this particular episode. Alternatively, is there any possibility you have newly acquired herpes?
Avatar m tn (How many people know they were exposed to herpes within an hour after sex with a new partner, and also have access to acyclovir or valacyclovir so quickly?) And once infection is established, there is no reason to suppose seroconversion would be delayed, which was one of china's main questions.
Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar f tn Initial gential herpes symptoms rarely if ever more than 2-3 weeks, especially when taking valacyclovir (Valtrex). It is very rare for herpes to not respond to valacyclovir. I wonder whether you now have a yeast infection, which can follow herpes (or any other genital area inflammation. Lysine is ineffective against herpes -- an urban myth, and some experts would call it quackery.
Avatar n tn Your risk of HIV is low. As a heterosexual man without other risk factors he was most likely not infected with HIV. If he was, the odds of you catching infection from him are less than 1 in 1000 per act of intercourse. Most importantly, you have a HIV test at 3 months- you can take that as definitive evidence that you do not have HIV. Having said this, let's answer your specific questions: 1. No, acyclovir has no direct effect on HIV.
Avatar m tn It seems to me that you are assuming that this is a valacyclovir rash. Has this been verified by your doctor. Are you sure that this is the case? Could anything else be causing this problem? Does it happen every time you take valacyclovir and stay there. If the rash is due to VCV, it should not come and go as long as you are taking the drug? Drug allergies may be either specific to the drug being taken or it may occur within a class of drugs.
Avatar m tn Valtrex is the dominant brand name, valacylcovir the generic name. Do not take both; it would be an overdose. (Probably not harmful, but not recommended.) You get maximum effectiveness against oral herpes with the 2 g (2000 mg) dose taken twice a day apart; higher, more frequent, or more prolonged treatment will make no difference. 2) You are typical in not having an identifed trigger of your outbreaks. Most people cannot pinpoint particular events.
Avatar m tn The recurrences you experienced after you stopped valacyclovir- were they all on your gums and has starting the valacyclovir helped. The reason I as is that recurrent oral HSV is more typically involving the lips than gums. Lesions on the gums are more likely to be aphous ulcers which don't respond very well to antiviral therapy. As for your genital lesion, it is most unlikely that this is HSV-2. Here are the reasons I say this: 1.
Avatar m tn rash still present...On 5th day of Famvir now, still discomfort in left testicle...Is this herpes? What else could it be? Worried about HIV, because of viral meds not working, but antibiotics not working either!...tested HIV negative 5 weeks ago at clinic..Too early for seroconversion? Please help!
Avatar m tn Is it possible that my diligence in taking three courses of Valacyclovir on the first onset of symptoms on the second, third and fourth outbreak symptoms could have weakened the virus to a point where my immune system did not detect and have to fight; and hence produce any antibodies yet? Or could it be that I have HSV I genitally that I gave to myself masturbating in March after having it orally for 10 years?
Avatar f tn After I posted this I talked to the hospital doc about my negativ test result. She didnt think Valtrex had interferred with the results. I have had "herpes symptoms" four months, taking Valtrex last four weeks. Maybe I could have a new test taken in a couple of weeks when my system is clear of Valtrex? Just to be on the safe side? Just no it is all too confusing. One doc says: HERPES! The other says: no this is not herpes.
Avatar m tn I am already diagnosed with HSV-2 and take Valacyclovir (Valtrex) 500mg daily. After some reading online, it seems that this medication may delay the HIV seroconversion. Does this mean that HIV symptoms would also be delayed or minimized? I understand that I will not be sure until I take an HIV test, but I am hoping for some peace of mind until I get tested at the 3 month mark.
Avatar n tn My new bottle says CPL Pms-Valacyclovir 500mg instead of CPL valtrex valacyclovir HCI 500mg. The guy at the drug place told my boyfriend that it was suppose to be the same and that it was only $14. He said that valtrex is no $50 for a fill now that there is a generic brand. He said that it should work the same and you take it the same, but he said if I notice I am getting an outbreak that I need to talk to my doc about going back on the other valtrex and see if I can get it cheaper.
