Common Questions and Answers about Use of guaifenesin in pregnancy

pseudovent

Avatar n tn , and the only OTC drug available for the purpose of easing the removal of phlegm here in the U.S. In Europe as well as in other parts of the world, "carbocisteine" is available OTC. Personally, I've found carbocisteine to work better than guaifenesin.
Avatar f tn Basically in a nut shell salicylate acid blocks guaifenesin st the renal tubule level, so while it can still decongest, the use we use it for is rendered ineffective. The same receptors that guaifenesin needs to go in at the tubules is the same that salicylate acid parks in. This happens when you apply them directly to your skin because it is directly absorbed into your blood stream like any other topical medication, hence you need far less potency since your liver is not metabolizing it.
Avatar n tn Mentholated cough drops numb pain in the throat. They also often contain cough suppressants in addition to the oral anesthetic. Cough drops that contain dextromethorphan and guaifenesin (an expectorant) are considered safe for pregnant women to use.
Avatar f tn FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether dextromethorphan and guaifenesin will harm an unborn baby. Do not use this medicine without a doctor's advice if you are pregnant.
Avatar m tn I was put on nebulized Mucomyst (in addition to nebulized Duoneb) and for the first time in years my lungs were clear of phlegm - totally clear. No more choking myself to exhaustion. However for some reason this is no longer on the market (this may be temporary). However what you can do is take an over-the-counter mucolitic. The only worthwhile one is Guaifenesin. You don't want to get Mucinex which has other ingredients, but plain guaifenesin. Also, take 500 mg of vitamin B5.
Avatar f tn Guaifenesin is pregnancy catergory C which means that it is only supposed to be taken when the benefits outway the risks.
1240856 tn?1333440354 Both EPO and guaifenesis can help with CM, just make sure you use cough medicine where guaifenesin is the only ingredient (like plain Robitussin), as some of the other ones contain ingredients that could be harmful in early pregnancy. You would take it for a few days leading up to ovulation. Good luck this month!
1777912 tn?1314474892 What type of ovu test are you using? I find the 2 line test hard to read sometimes, so I usually use the digital ones with the smily face that way there is no confusion. Maybe try these until u get a positive then you can use the strip ones to see what a positive looks like on the 2 line ones for you. cramping to one side & egg white Cm are signs of ovulation, so I say BD around that time!! lol Good luck to you, I wish you all the best!
1106767 tn?1315050974 m not on clomid but I have issues with not nearly enough cm. Does it not matter what kind of robitussin you use except that it should contain guaif.... (that word)?
Avatar m tn You could also use ways of increasing cervical mucous as well such as anything with guaifenesin. Which would be Robitussin. (Just the plain kind). You should also drink a lot more water, try out some green tea and try out evening primrose oil. All of those things will improve the amount of cervical mucous which will inhance your chances of pregnancy. It'll also help your body lubricate so that everything isn't as painful. Hope this helps!
Avatar f tn Here is a list of meds that are ok to take...
359295 tn?1285952394 I have read somewhere that taking EPO helps to alleviate premenstrual syndrome symptoms and aids in the production of fertile quality cervical fluid. Has anyone taking this and found it to be true? Someone had recommended it to me. I noticed that i do not get much ewcm. And with this supplement, it can help produce more cm. Maybe that is one of the reason's why i cannot conceive. I m/c on 9/29, and have been having trouble since. I chart my BBT, Cm, and Cp and still nothing.
Avatar f tn Cough or cold Guaifenesin, an expectorant (Hytuss, Mucinex, Naldecon Senior EX, Robitussin) Dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant (Benylin Adult, Robitussin Maximum Strength Cough, Scot-Tussin DM, Vicks 44 Cough Relief) Guaifenesin plus dextromethorphan (Benylin Expectorant, Robitussin DM, Vicks 44E) Cough drops Vicks VapoRub Not safe to take: Cold remedies that contain alcohol The decongestants pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine, which can affect blood flow to the placenta
1190279 tn?1324936257 I used Mucinex which has the same ingredient (guaifenesin) in it as Robitussin, but it does not taste bad because it is a pill. I used it for my 2nd round of Clomid and I am now 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant!!! I started it 3 days after my last Clomid pill and continued to take it until I knew I had ovulated. I took 600 mg once per day. I hope that helps!
Avatar f tn You can buy the generic of Guaifenesin in liquid or tablet form. I think the tablets come in a higher concentration. (400 mg?) How it works is that it thins the cervical mucus in the same way it thins the mucus in your chest or nose when your congested. Make sure what you buy only has Guaifenesin in it, though, or you might end up taking something that contributes to drying out the CM more. Good luck!
Avatar n tn This thins mucus so that it *will* drain, also allowing the throat more moisture. I have also come across mention of people using guaifenesin in their treatment of fibromyalgia (https://www.drugs.com/comments/guaifenesin/for-fibromyalgia.html). Before I was ever diagnosed with fibromyalgia I noticed a decrease in pain that I was experiencing, so although I'm skeptical about the connection, I certainly won't discredit the possibility.
199914 tn?1295890047 Yea I took it Mucinex wit a guaifenesin of 1200mg and I am now 4 weeks and 5 days pregnant! Also preseed and alot of prayer. I was in TTC for 2 years. It will happen for you.
377493 tn?1356502149 Also if you do not do well with elixirs you may want to take Mucinex instead. It is Guaifenesin as well in an oral tablet form. You are supposed to use this before you ovulate and not after because Guaifenesin is thought to cross the placental barrier which means your fetus would be exposed to it. I have no clue what affect it has on the fetus. My body has always produced alot of EWCM, but I noticed when I used Guaifenesin, it increased my cervical mucus even more. I hope this helps friend.
Avatar f tn I tried clomid in Nov of last year. We had to use provera first to induce a period though. I actually got pregnant on our first round, but it ended in a tubal pregnancy. Many women believe that clomid cause tubal pregnancy, but it hasn't been "scientifically proven." I never even thought to research it before it happened so you may want to talk to your doctor about it. Also, research the side effects.
Avatar n tn Guaifenesin, how much is an Overdose? My daughter 11 years old 100 lbs (big for her age), took (the correct dose) 5mL cough and cold medicine that had the following in that dose. Guaifenesin, USP 100 mg, Dextromethorpan HBr, USP 10 mL. Phenylephedrine HCI, USB 5mg. But then she also took (the correct dose) 10 mg of a prescription medicine Guaifenesin-Codeine syrup (generic for Robitussin AC syrup). It doesn't state on the label the quantity of Guaifenesin mg in the 5mL dose.
Avatar f tn Does anyone use decongestants (Guiefenesin found in cough syrup & cold meds) to help CM to be a good consistency? I heard it helps the sperm get through more easily. A friend of mine was TTC for five years and her husband had low motility. She started taking cough syrup and within 6-12 months, got pregnant and miscarried a few weeks in (in Nov.) & now is 5 weeks pregnant again and everything is looking good. I have been TTC for two years and am wondering if I should try it. Is it safe?
2023091 tn?1334024905 ll find other people that used it will explain everything. The one ingredient in it is Guaifenesin. Try this link http://*****************/question/index?
Avatar f tn Also you need to drink plenty of water!! YOu have to do this in order for it to work. I just started taking clomid and i read to start the guaifenesin on day 10 till ovulation. On a website for fertility i read that you need to take 200mg three times a day!
Avatar n tn The alternative is guaifenesin, which you can buy over-the-counter. Mucinex contains guaifenesin, but I would get the plain guaifenesin. It works very well.
Avatar n tn yes, well sort of. It's Guaifenesin an ingredient found in cough meds. You can usually find a store brand of robitussin that has only Guaifenesin in it. The ingredient is made to break up mucus, but if taken while you ovulate it can make your CM more compatible with sperm.
