1776315 tn?1314350672 There is a version of TN that is caused by shingles -- called post-herpetic trigeminal neuralgia. It could also be "classic" TN or another type of facial pain. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right doctor with experience in facial pain. I went through 5 different doctors before I found #6 -- a Facial Pain specialist - that was able to help me. You can find a Facial Pain specialist at a large teaching hospital.
Avatar m tn Had a small outbreak of Shingles on the left side of my face 2/20/16 that turned into Post herpetic neuralgia. Which attacked the nerve root of my Trigeminal nerve.Since then I am in constant pain and numbness on the left side of my face, lower lip, teeth and gum.
485259 tn?1519047026 I think it is very important that you include Shingles on your site. It links to Trigeminal Neuralgia. Also consider Post Herpetic Neuralgia. There are many people suffering right now that could be helped by information and to have support and know they are not alone, and even better, get treatment immediately and be thankful to call themselves lucky to avoid the complications that can arise from misinformation and delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis.
485259 tn?1519047026 I have had Trigeminal Neuralgia for about a year now. At first it was severe, more the type 1 classic and mostly the horrible pain was in my head. Later spread to my face. Now I have been diagnosed as type 2 or Atypical TN with the constant pain with the occasional episode of breakthrough stabbing pain of the classic type. What makes me different than the average case is that originally shingles was suspected although I never really had sores, only a slight red mark on my scalp.
Avatar n tn Sounds like trigeminal neuralgia type 2 (which is the constant aching, burning, stabbing pain of somewhat lower intensity than type 1). The underlying cause of any type of neuralgia is damage to a nerve. Causes include shingles, syphilis, MS, Lyme Disease, vitamin B12 deficiency, pressure or injury to nerves due to a slipped discs or tumour to name a few.
Avatar n tn Has your mother seen a Neurologist for evaluation? I had Trigeminal Neuralgia after shingles on my face, and the pain is worse than anything I've ever felt before. She definately needs to be checked out.
Avatar n tn Hello, The possibility that comes to my mind when you talk of sensitivity on an area of your face is trigeminal neuralgia. Also dental caries, temperomandibular joint disease cause similar sensitivity, but not on the scalp. Sinusitis is also a possibility. If you had shingles in the area of the scalp which is sensitive, then this could be post herpetic neuralgia. Contact a neurologist. Do keep me posted.
Avatar n tn Hi, Thank you very much for your question. Post herpetic neuralgia appears at skin after the outbreak of shingles (herpes). It starts when herpes crusted over and in fact it may even appear after absence of herpes virus. It will be best that you consult a neurologist and treatment options could be anticonvulsants such as gabapentin, antideprassants and topical lidocaine lotion.
Avatar f tn For those of you with trigeminal neuralgia, would you mind me asking you what it feels like? I have been assuming, for a while, that what I have in my face is bilateral trigeminal neurlagia. But, perhaps I'm wrong.
Avatar m tn Sounds a lot like shingles but usually that has a rash. Trigeminal neuralgia without shingles is another possibility as are a couple of headache syndromes. Your eye exam rules out any. Eye problems and CT rules out sinusitis. I think you need an MRI exam of the brain and Brainstem/neck (important to get both) and possibly an angiography to rule out subtle aneurysm, brainstem lesion or carotid dissection.
Avatar f tn When I try to find info on gababantin I find that it's for the aftermath of shingles. What is the connection to ms and why do ms patients take it?
Avatar n tn My first attack of pain from what was diagnosed (after seeing two dentists and several Drs) as Atypical Trigeminal neuralgia took over two months to get the pain under control. The side effects from the medications were also very bad, although I was grateful for any relief from the extreme pain. I have been seen at the neurological centre and have had an MRI scan to determine if there was a vessel crossing over the Trigeminal nerve, which could be causing the pain attack.
Avatar n tn Hence it could be Trigeminal neuralgia, abscess in tooth, exposed root canal, internal ear infection, maxillary sinusitis, TMJ, migraine, shingles or fibromyalgia localized to face. Since you have TMJ like pain and cold sores, possibility of shingles should be looked into. Since I cannot examine you and know other related conditions you may be having, nor is a detailed history possible on net, I have listed the various possibilities that should be looked into.
2134902 tn?1335849687 Trigeminal neuralgia and PHN are the main conditions to be thought of in your case. If you did have a preceding vesicular rash along this dermatome the second is most probable. Regards.
Avatar f tn Did you ever get a reply? Sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia Type 1 or Atypical. There is help for this! Same needs used for seizures help condition and pain attacks. Tegretol is one but many more. Thank you Neurologist treats TN. Studies happening now.

Avatar m tn Traumatic trigeminal neuropathy is generally not associated with trigeminal neuralgia. However, both entities may be responsive to pharmacologic intervention. Seeing a neurologist or orofacial pain specialist misadvised.
Avatar f tn Shortly after I noticed I started getting ridiculous zapping pain on the RIGHT side of my face, referred to a neurologist, got some blood work and MRI. I was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia and started treating with gabapentin. Meds were awful and couldn’t function at all on them, headaches, blurry vision and incredible fatigue. Tried lyrica, carbamazepine, they were the same...
Avatar f tn t say for certainty what was the issue is the neurologist says trigeminal neuralgia and the ENT says TMJ. The pain is horrible and is daily. Where my mouth hurts there isn't even a tooth there! So far I have been on tegretol, Neurontin, 800mg ib profufen, Tylenol, vicodin, Tylenol 3, and Norco's and acyclovir (in case it was shingles) not all at the same time. NOTHING works. Well, the ib proufen works but it only lasts maybe 2 hours and I can only take it every 12 hours.
Avatar f tn Also look into Cluster headaches, migraines, TMJ and trigeminal neuralgia. You can find informative forums on all here to help. If pain persists or worsens of course see a doctor. Also note if anything triggers it like cold, noise, chewing and other sensitivities. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia is usually caused by multiple sclerosis or by tumours arising near the trigeminal nerve root. Differential diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia: Cluster headache - Longer-lasting pain; orbital or supraorbital; may cause patient to wake from sleep; autonomic symptoms Dental pain (e.g.
