trigeminal-neuralgia

1776315 tn?1314350672 There is a version of TN that is caused by shingles -- called post-herpetic trigeminal neuralgia. It could also be "classic" TN or another type of facial pain. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right doctor with experience in facial pain. I went through 5 different doctors before I found #6 -- a Facial Pain specialist - that was able to help me. You can find a Facial Pain specialist at a large teaching hospital.
Avatar f tn Did you ever get a reply? Sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia Type 1 or Atypical. There is help for this! Same needs used for seizures help condition and pain attacks. Tegretol is one but many more. Thank you Neurologist treats TN. Studies happening now.
Avatar m tn Had a small outbreak of Shingles on the left side of my face 2/20/16 that turned into Post herpetic neuralgia. Which attacked the nerve root of my Trigeminal nerve.Since then I am in constant pain and numbness on the left side of my face, lower lip, teeth and gum.
Avatar n tn Has your mother seen a Neurologist for evaluation? I had Trigeminal Neuralgia after shingles on my face, and the pain is worse than anything I've ever felt before. She definately needs to be checked out.
485259 tn?1519047026 I think it is very important that you include Shingles on your site. It links to Trigeminal Neuralgia. Also consider Post Herpetic Neuralgia. There are many people suffering right now that could be helped by information and to have support and know they are not alone, and even better, get treatment immediately and be thankful to call themselves lucky to avoid the complications that can arise from misinformation and delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis.
Avatar f tn post herpetic neuralgia was the initial diagnosis, but the symptoms remained after a year and then two so the diagnosis became trigeminal neuralgia... my neurologist ruled MS out right away, my second MRI is clear.. absolutely nothing there, that’s why we are settling on stress and/or depression... as I try to rule out things, I keep getting diagnosed and treated for LOTS of things...
Avatar m tn Sounds a lot like shingles but usually that has a rash. Trigeminal neuralgia without shingles is another possibility as are a couple of headache syndromes. Your eye exam rules out any. Eye problems and CT rules out sinusitis. I think you need an MRI exam of the brain and Brainstem/neck (important to get both) and possibly an angiography to rule out subtle aneurysm, brainstem lesion or carotid dissection.
485259 tn?1519047026 I have had Trigeminal Neuralgia for about a year now. At first it was severe, more the type 1 classic and mostly the horrible pain was in my head. Later spread to my face. Now I have been diagnosed as type 2 or Atypical TN with the constant pain with the occasional episode of breakthrough stabbing pain of the classic type. What makes me different than the average case is that originally shingles was suspected although I never really had sores, only a slight red mark on my scalp.
Avatar n tn Sounds like trigeminal neuralgia type 2 (which is the constant aching, burning, stabbing pain of somewhat lower intensity than type 1). The underlying cause of any type of neuralgia is damage to a nerve. Causes include shingles, syphilis, MS, Lyme Disease, vitamin B12 deficiency, pressure or injury to nerves due to a slipped discs or tumour to name a few.

Avatar f tn For those of you with trigeminal neuralgia, would you mind me asking you what it feels like? I have been assuming, for a while, that what I have in my face is bilateral trigeminal neurlagia. But, perhaps I'm wrong.
Avatar n tn Already she had two pain blocks, neither worked at all and now they want to do a Radio Frequency abrasion - I am concerned about her diagnosis, atypical trigeminal neuralgia -- being treated like the regular Trigeminal Neuralgia, the pain symptoms do not match -- did yours start this was and progress into the trigeminal neuralgia They have all her dental recorrds, even an MRI plus another ct from emergency room earlier this year, and all the records from the pain clinics -- yet pain symtoms
Avatar n tn Hello, The possibility that comes to my mind when you talk of sensitivity on an area of your face is trigeminal neuralgia. Also dental caries, temperomandibular joint disease cause similar sensitivity, but not on the scalp. Sinusitis is also a possibility. If you had shingles in the area of the scalp which is sensitive, then this could be post herpetic neuralgia. Contact a neurologist. Do keep me posted.
Avatar n tn This is usually treated with antiviral medication and sometimes oral steroids. Sometimes, this can lead to facial pain (trigeminal neuralgia). I would recommend he seeks treatment from an ENT as soon as possible.
Avatar n tn Hi, Thank you very much for your question. Post herpetic neuralgia appears at skin after the outbreak of shingles (herpes). It starts when herpes crusted over and in fact it may even appear after absence of herpes virus. It will be best that you consult a neurologist and treatment options could be anticonvulsants such as gabapentin, antideprassants and topical lidocaine lotion.
Avatar f tn Trigeminal neuralgia is nearly always unilateral. In rare cases of bilateral trigeminal neuralgia, individual attacks are usually unilateral, with distinct episodes involving each side of the face at separate times. A change in the location, severity, or quality of the pain should be an alert to the possibility of an alternative diagnosis. Symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia is usually caused by multiple sclerosis or by tumours arising near the trigeminal nerve root.
2134902 tn?1335849687 Trigeminal neuralgia and PHN are the main conditions to be thought of in your case. If you did have a preceding vesicular rash along this dermatome the second is most probable. Regards.
Avatar f tn Hello unnerved, Trigeminal nerve which is responsible for sensations of the face. The cause trigeminal neuralgia is probably a blood vessel pressing on the trigeminal nerve. Tumors and multiple sclerosis can also cause it, but in some cases the cause is unknown. The pain is sudden, severe, electric shock-like, stabbing that is typically felt on one side of the jaw or cheek.
Avatar n tn Hi, The common causes of shooting pains on right side of head are trigeminal neuralgia, temporal arteritis, tension headaches etc.In trigeminal neuralgia there are successive bouts of face pain. This pain occurs when a blood vessel compresses the trigeminal nerve as it leaves the brain stem. Temporal arteritis is caused due to inflammation of medium and large sized arteries bringing blood to the head.
Avatar f tn Hi all, small question for you, i had no symptoms for 5 months, which was wonderful, and then i got this urinary infection , and the next thing i knew i had severe face pain, particularly in my nose, where it feels lie i have been bashed in the face with a pan, i have buzzing in my ears, and just a general tightness in my neck and shoulders, i got my eyebrows tattooed also, could this have caused trigeminal neuralgia ? or would it have been the infection, ?
