Common Questions and Answers about Trigeminal neuralgia symptoms trigeminal nerve

trigeminal-neuralgia

Avatar f tn Hi, This may be Trigeminal neuralgia as you have typical one sided facial pain extending to temple and eye( ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve may be involved) and sore gums of the teeth of same side (maxillary branch of 5th nerve). Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid.
Avatar n tn Hi, The common causes of shooting pains on right side of head are trigeminal neuralgia, temporal arteritis, tension headaches etc.In trigeminal neuralgia there are successive bouts of face pain. This pain occurs when a blood vessel compresses the trigeminal nerve as it leaves the brain stem. Temporal arteritis is caused due to inflammation of medium and large sized arteries bringing blood to the head.
Avatar f tn Hello unnerved, Trigeminal nerve which is responsible for sensations of the face. The cause trigeminal neuralgia is probably a blood vessel pressing on the trigeminal nerve. Tumors and multiple sclerosis can also cause it, but in some cases the cause is unknown. The pain is sudden, severe, electric shock-like, stabbing that is typically felt on one side of the jaw or cheek.
Avatar m tn Could it be that mandibular nerve damage can develop tp TN?
Avatar f tn Did you ever get a reply? Sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia Type 1 or Atypical. There is help for this! Same needs used for seizures help condition and pain attacks. Tegretol is one but many more. Thank you Neurologist treats TN. Studies happening now.

Avatar f tn Symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia is usually caused by multiple sclerosis or by tumours arising near the trigeminal nerve root. Differential diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia: Cluster headache - Longer-lasting pain; orbital or supraorbital; may cause patient to wake from sleep; autonomic symptoms Dental pain (e.g.
Avatar n tn surgical techniques may be needed like cutting or destroying part of trigeminal nerve, surgery to remove a blood vessel or tumor that is putting pressure on the trigeminal nerve. Hope this helps. Take care.

Therefore, they are hardly interlinked.
Avatar m tn Hi there. Trigeminal neuralgia is characterized by a muscle spasm that accompanies pain, coming from one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve, the main carrier of sensory information from face to the brain. There are three branches of trigeminal nerve, the ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular. The pain of trigeminal neuralgia occurs almost exclusively in the maxillary and mandibular divisions.
1475492 tn?1332884167 Hiya all! It's been awhile. How are y'all? I hope the holidays are treating you well. I have been taking some time to go through my latest rounds of tests and seeing new specialists my MSologist referred me for. I had an SSEP that was normal. I am thankful for that. The Neuro-Ophthalmalogist ran many tests and indicated that some of my vision issues are refractive but there is also indication of other things going on there.
Avatar f tn One of the causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia could be tumors. The Trigeminal nerve and its branches touches many parts of the face including the sinuses. (Google Gray's Anatomy (bartleby.com) for good diagrams of where the Trigeminal Nerve is). I personally have not heard that TN loosens teeth -- although pain in the teeth and gums (because of all the areas the nerve touches) is common.
Avatar n tn This could be a trigeminal neuralgia. It can start after infections. Trigeminal neuralgia can be difficult to treat. There are some good medicines available for it. The pain of trigeminal neuralgia can be brought on by even a light touch of the fingers, Try medicines for TN and also take care of your allergy.
Avatar n tn However, I had the same symptoms you were having and was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. Its where one or more of the three main nerves in your face cause nerve pain, or neuralgia. The first nerve lays across the eyebrows, the second lays across your cheek bones and the third nerve lays across the chin. My doctor put me on Lyrica and Klonopin and it seems to help a little, although the pain does intensify and the pain medication does not work for it since it is nerve pain.
Avatar f tn I have been going to the doctor for several years for sinusitis, then I began to have facial pain. After several different doctors, I was told that I had trigeminal neuralgia as well as a deviated septum. I eventually had laser surgery for the trigeminal neuralgia, but the a facial pain continues. The nerve pain has subsided, but I continue to have facial pain on my left side. The pain seems to get worse if I lean my head to that side.
Avatar n tn Hello, From your symptoms the possibilities of trigeminal neuralgia and temporal arteritis need to be ruled out. Trigeminal neuralgia is painful swelling (inflammation) of the nerve (trigeminal nerve) that delivers feeling to the face and "surface" of the eye. Trigeminal neuralgia causes severe, short-lasting (only a few seconds) facial pain on the side of the affected nerve even by slight touch. Mostly affects elderly females. May be caused in multiple sclerosis also.

Avatar f tn Hello, In your case, I think that it can be trigeminal neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia is very painful swelling (inflammation) of the nerve (trigeminal nerve) that delivers feeling to the face and "surface" of the eye. Trigeminal neuralgia causes severe, short-lasting (only a few seconds) facial pain on the side of the affected nerve even by slight touch. Mostly affects elderly females. Avatar f tn I think it is something like 50% of MS patients will develop TN at some point. It is thought to be caused by direct demyelination of the Trigeminal Nerve (Cranial Nerve 5 - CN5) or a lesion near where CN5 inserts at the brainstem. Mine started like an ache just above my ear and below my temple. All my upper teeth on the right side of my jaw hurt. Then I got that ZAP you get when the dentist sticks the needle into the hinge of your jaw to numb you up.
Avatar f tn I have been suffering for 2-1/2 years with oral facial pain. It began on the left and is now bilateral. I get severe, constant pain in the upper gums, teeth, cheeks, temples, jaws, neck. At times there are sharp twinges, but mostly it is a deep, constant ache. I have had close to pain-free moments, but just when i think I'm cured, it flares up. I have had 2 diagnosis. TMJ with osteoarthritis of the jaw joints and cervical spine. The other diagnosis is from a neurologist.
Avatar n tn I have trigeminal & geniculate neuralgia & had microvascular decompression surgery 10/09 w/ a neurosurgeon & ENT MD. My surgery was abnormal, they were unable to decompress the 7th nerve due to massive amounts of extra &abnormal blood vessels wrapped around it. The 5th nerve wss decompressed &it controlled/allievated my trigeminal symptoms for 6 mo. I recommend finding an experienced surgeon & get MVD, this diagnosis is so painful even only 6 mo of remission was worth it.
Avatar f tn Can the parotid gland swell and cause trigeminal neuralgia? Or even lymph nodes swell and get into any facial nerves or am i stuck taking this horrible medicine (carba..) for a long time and these are two different symptoms????
Avatar f tn I am a 38 year old female who was just recently diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. Back in 2003, I had brain surgery to remove a pinealoma and had a shunt placed less than a month later due to meningitis and hydrocephalus. My question is whether trigeminal neuralgia could be caused by scar tissue from the brain surgery. I understand that the trigeminal nerve begins at the base of the skull which is where my incision began for brain surgery. I have an appt. with a new neurologist on Nov.
Avatar n tn i have been treated for tmj for 5 years with no relief and then i had an arthrocentesis done and still no relief. now my doc tells me i have trigeminal neuralgia and is going to give me an injection into that nerve. what i want to know is there side effects of this injection? and can trigeminal neuralgia cause pain in the back of the head where the skull meets the spine. i have had continuous pain there worse then ever. i am now on neurontin and baclofen and it helps extremely.
