429700 tn?1308007823 Sounds like Trigeminal neuralgia (TN). The Trigeminal nerve has 3 main branches. There are motor component along with the sensory ones. It can cause motor tic and was known as tic douloureux at one time.
Avatar f tn I wake up with the pain almost every morning and it hurts throughout the day. The doctors thought i might have Trigeminal Neuralgia (tic douloureux) but my pain lasts for hours at a time. I don't think I have that. Does anyone know what I might have???
Avatar f tn its use for trigeminal neuralgia (formerly known as tic douloureux) was introduced at the same time. It has been used as an anticonvulsant and antiepileptic in the UK since 1965, and has been approved in the US since 1974. So like many drugs to treat nerve pain this was not initially used for that purpose. Carbamazepine web-site says this: Carbamazepine (Brand name Tegretol) is an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizing drug, used primarily in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder.
Avatar f tn Trigeminal neuralgia (nerve pain) can be extremely painful- have you found any websites on that, also known as tic douloureux? Did the maxillofacial people believe you had no TMJ issues and if so, what did they base that assessment on? Regarding your appointment in 7 weeks- I suggest you get on a cancellation waiting list if they have one in case they come up with an earlier opening.
Avatar n tn I was recently dx with TIC, and have a history of white matter lesions on my brain. I am 29 yrs old. The symptoms of TIC have been occuring for almost 10 years. From what I understand TIC is rare in young adults. I have had numerous MRI's due to the lesions on my brain, and there was never a tumor or anything noted. I have sporadic weakness in one of my legs as well. It is much like the TIC, there is no pattern, and it doesn't last long. Any clues?
Avatar m tn Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is the most common type of neuralgia, also known as tic douloureux. TN is resulting in intense and extreme episodes of pain in the face lasting from a few seconds to several minutes. Known causes include multiple sclerosis (MS) or tumours pressing against the nerve. Vitamin B12 deficiency is another cause of facial neuralgia.
Avatar f tn The causes for pain in face are an abscess in tooth, cluster headache, herpes zoster or simplex, facial injury, migraine, myofascial pain syndrome, sinusitis but has been ruled out by endoscopy, tic douloureux, or tempero mandibular joint dysfunction syndrome etc. You can consider these options with your neurologist, though trigeminal neuralgia is a fair possibility. treatment would include painkillers, tricyclic anti depressants etc. Hope this helps. Take care.
404715 tn?1233829631 Not having any doctors here to help me I went out of town to an emergency where they then put me on tegretol and told me I most likley have trigeminal neuralgia and set up an appointment with a neurologist.I was on tegretol for two weeks and waiting to go to my neurologist appointment but the pain was still unbearable so I went to the emergency in my city where they changed my meds and put me on neurotin which took a week to work and most of the pain is gone.
Avatar f tn Did you ever get a reply? Sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia Type 1 or Atypical. There is help for this! Same needs used for seizures help condition and pain attacks. Tegretol is one but many more. Thank you Neurologist treats TN. Studies happening now.
11079760 tn?1483386130 When one-sided headaches are involved, the possibility of migraines and migraine 'variants' should always be considered. These headaches can occur on either side, though in chronic migraineurs, there tends to be a 'favorite' side for the pain. In some types of migraines, there can be stroke-like symptoms, such as slurring or losing words. There was a rather famous case a while back of a TV announcer who had one of these while broadcasting live.

Avatar n tn hi again....I looked this up on MAYOCLINIC.COM its referred to as TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA....it follows the branches of the trigeminal nerve...look at the site for more info.
Avatar n tn Hi, It could be early symptom of minor damage of trigeminal or facial nerve. In trigeminal neuralgia its associated with facial pain.In Facial nerve(Bells palsy) its associated with drooling of eye lid and deviation of mouth.Consult doctor to check for sensation over cheek.
Avatar f tn Trigeminal neuralgia is nearly always unilateral. In rare cases of bilateral trigeminal neuralgia, individual attacks are usually unilateral, with distinct episodes involving each side of the face at separate times. A change in the location, severity, or quality of the pain should be an alert to the possibility of an alternative diagnosis. Symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia is usually caused by multiple sclerosis or by tumours arising near the trigeminal nerve root.
Avatar n tn Look up info on Trigeminal Neuralgia...That is the "Tic" I think they were referring to..There is a web site TNA devoted to explaining this facial pain that often starts from tooth or eye problems and causes the trigeminal nerve to act up...It is a very painful condition that can "come and go" , stay, etc...Best of Luck..
Avatar f tn Hello unnerved, Trigeminal nerve which is responsible for sensations of the face. The cause trigeminal neuralgia is probably a blood vessel pressing on the trigeminal nerve. Tumors and multiple sclerosis can also cause it, but in some cases the cause is unknown. The pain is sudden, severe, electric shock-like, stabbing that is typically felt on one side of the jaw or cheek.
Avatar n tn Hi, The common causes of shooting pains on right side of head are trigeminal neuralgia, temporal arteritis, tension headaches etc.In trigeminal neuralgia there are successive bouts of face pain. This pain occurs when a blood vessel compresses the trigeminal nerve as it leaves the brain stem. Temporal arteritis is caused due to inflammation of medium and large sized arteries bringing blood to the head.
Avatar f tn Hi all, small question for you, i had no symptoms for 5 months, which was wonderful, and then i got this urinary infection , and the next thing i knew i had severe face pain, particularly in my nose, where it feels lie i have been bashed in the face with a pan, i have buzzing in my ears, and just a general tightness in my neck and shoulders, i got my eyebrows tattooed also, could this have caused trigeminal neuralgia ? or would it have been the infection, ?
Avatar m tn Trigeminal neuralgia symptoms can be scary, causing anxiety, rising your heart rate. Follow up with your doctor for what you describe to make sure that there are not other conditions involved, I agree that your described conditions do not seem commonly related to the diagnosis alone.
Avatar f tn I have been going to the doctor for several years for sinusitis, then I began to have facial pain. After several different doctors, I was told that I had trigeminal neuralgia as well as a deviated septum. I eventually had laser surgery for the trigeminal neuralgia, but the a facial pain continues. The nerve pain has subsided, but I continue to have facial pain on my left side. The pain seems to get worse if I lean my head to that side.
Avatar f tn Hello. For a few months my trigeminal nerve has been irritated. It's the first and second branch. I experience the electrical shock (more like a tickle) that I've experienced with Trigeminal Neuralgia but there's no pain. It seems to happen often when my head is tilted forward/down and that makes me wonder if it could be an issue with my cervical spine. I really don't have any unusual discomfort in my neck. I don't have headaches or sinus pressure or anything.
1475492 tn?1332884167 An interesting aspect is that this form affects both men and women equally and can occur at any age, unlike typical trigeminal neuralgia, which is seen most commonly in women. Though TN and ATN most often present in the fifth decade, cases have been documented as early as infancy. http://en.wikipedia.
Avatar n tn Just the other day I saw a neurologist and got Tegretol which is supposed to help the pain cuased by Trigeminal neuralgia which I have same symptoms for. BUT taking for 2 days 100mg per day didn't do anything. and yesterday I even felt some mild but still dull toothache one the other side of my face. My symptoms are generally get worst as the day goes by. and I have this constant tender point on end of my jaw line since the very beginning of the extraction.
