Common Questions and Answers about Trigeminal neuralgia cranial nerve

trigeminal-neuralgia

Avatar n tn Corneal reflex is closing of the eyelids when the cornea is touched or a puff of air is blown on to it, mediated by the fifth cranial or trigeminal nerve and is ususlly absent in trigeminal neuralgia. Usually trigeminal neuropathy is not related to connective tissue disorder. Refer http://www.emedicinehealth.com/trigeminal_neuralgia_facial_nerve_pain/article_em.
1475492 tn?1332884167 It does help! It sounds very similar. My pain was chronic. I had good days then bad days. I am lucky that it seems to have peaked during my initial flare then very gradually improved until I no longer had symptoms. The Neuro's are the ones that led me this direction but they didn't mention TN specifically, just cranial nerve v and then my MSologist said "head nerve thing." She's trying not to get technical. I'll keep you informed.
Avatar n tn You need to be investigated for trigeminal neuralgia and temporal arteritis. Trigeminal neuralgia is a nerve disorder that causes a stabbing electric shock like pain in parts of face. Various possible causes are multiple sclerosis and pressure on the nerve from a swollen blood vessel. Pain may be triggered by touch, sounds, chewing and light touch on face. Certain blood tests, MRI brain and trigeminal reflex testing apart from a neurological examination are required.
382218 tn?1341181487 I do have a lesion in the pons which was the cause of my severe diplopia - affecting the 6th cranial nerve. The trigeminal nerve is the 5th cranial nerve. I always thought of TN as only occuring along the jaw line, triggered by chewing, etc. Haven't experienced anything like this before, or since. I shuddered afterwards, thinking that had it occurred 24 hours prior, it would have hit me as I was seated with 20 or so others gathered at a friend's for a 60th birthday party.
Avatar f tn It is just like Trigeminal Neuralgia, but is caused by a lesion near or in another cranial nerve. It can be treated by the same meds that are used for TN. Glosso(tongue) pharyngeal (upper throat) Nerve is the 9th CN. Trigenimal (three Roots) Nerve - is the 5th CN. It is the main sensory nerve to the face. Jen - Remember, just because they don't see a lesion, doesn't mean that there is no lesion there. Many, many lesions remain invisible to the MRI.
Avatar f tn html The loss of hearing is due to a different Cranial Nerve, the 8th nerve also called the Acoustic Nerve or the Vestibulo-acoustic Nerve.
Avatar f tn Tongue movements are controlled by the 12th cranial nerve (hypoglossal). The functioning of this nerve is what the doctor is looking for when he asks you to "stick out your tongue". Your condition suggests a palsy of the 12th cranial nerve, which can be caused by many things, from diabetes, to vitamin B-12 deficiency, to an aneurysm. This symptom, juxtaposed with migraine, would suggest an MRI would be appropriate.
Avatar n tn I have a recent dx of Trigeminal Neuralgia from Primary Care and have been referred to Neurology for further evaluation. The pain distribution is unilateral and follows the sensory distribution of cranial nerve V at the maxillary area. History of previous trauma (neuroplasia) dates to 1997, though asymptomatic to current presentation. There is no prior history of TMJ, aneurysms, tumors or other common precipitants. I am 61 years old, consistent with typical onset.
567677 tn?1246767776 pain syndrome of the Trigeminal nerve. This nerve is the 5th Cranial Nerve and supplies most of the sensation to the face. There is one on both sides. The Cranial Nerves are nerves that emerge directly out of the brain or brainstem. They look just like peripheral nerves, but because they originate in the CNS, they are part of the central system. TN is considered one of the most intolerable of all pains. Its nickname is "The Suicide Pain.
Avatar f tn I too am very interested in the cranial nerves. One of my symptoms over the last 10 years has been a LOT of shocks and paresthesias on both sides of my face (in my teeth and nose, too). I have also had strong twitching on one side, plus highly abnormal auditory EPs on both sides, which a past neuro called "cranial neuropathy." Plus the spasmodic episodes of clicking in my left ear with pain/pressure behind the ear, which I believe is a 7th-nerve thing.
645390 tn?1338555377 They are done together to break the pain cycle caused by Occipital Neuralgia (Cevical 2 Neuralgia). This pain syndrome is very similar to Trigeminal Neuralgia (Cranial Nerve 5 Neuralgia.
Avatar m tn The symptoms you are describing bear resemblance to few possibilities like facial nerve palsy, trigeminal neuralgia MPDS( myofacial pain dysfunction) and then TMJ disorder due to strenuous opening of mouth for long sittings of RCT.
1140169 tn?1370185076 Hi, Mike, TN is not as simple as it would seem. The first thing you HAVE to do is make sure that all tose teeth are healthy and that your TMJ (Jaw joint) is okay. Assuming everything is hunky dory, then we do start talking about Trigeminal Neuralgia. If you looked at the picture of the Trigeminal Nerve (cranial nerve V) and read my description, you'll remember that the nerve has three branches (Tri = three, Geminal = roots). V1 handles sensation from the top of the face above the eye.
1523516 tn?1330044257 t sound typical for ON. Trigeminal Neuralgia, maybe. The Trigeminal nerve passes above the ear and splits into 3 branches. The first branch goes to the lower jaw, the second one goes to the upper jaw and the third goes to the upper face and surface of the eye. The Trigeminal nerve is the 5th cranial nerve and is not involved in optic neuritis. The 5th Cranial nerve terminates at the pons. ON is demyelination of the 2nd cranial nerve.
Avatar f tn After a n MRI of brain, she gave me articles that involve freeing up nerve entrapment of 5th cranial nerve...All the proceedures were varying into brain procedures , some could cause paralysis of face. none of the procedures would involve relieving the the eye pain. When I called the eye clinic that did the catract surgery to left eye, I mentioned I had peripheral neuralgia yet they performed surgery anyway. At this time the dr.
Avatar f tn I think it is something like 50% of MS patients will develop TN at some point. It is thought to be caused by direct demyelination of the Trigeminal Nerve (Cranial Nerve 5 - CN5) or a lesion near where CN5 inserts at the brainstem. Mine started like an ache just above my ear and below my temple. All my upper teeth on the right side of my jaw hurt. Then I got that ZAP you get when the dentist sticks the needle into the hinge of your jaw to numb you up.
Avatar f tn Hemi-facial numbness is also seen in Bell’s palsy, trigeminal neuralgia where a spasm may cause numbness, or due to acoustic neuroma which is a benign tumor of the eighth cranial nerve. I think you should discuss these possibilities with your doctor. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining. A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar n tn This usually indicates an MS lesion somewhere from the brainstem to along the Trigeminal nerve which is one of the Cranial nerves. It usually is severe stabbing pains which come with some sort of stimulation. The stim can be anything like touching the face or lips, chewing, stim to the tongue, even as mild as air blowing on the face. Many researchers in the field also acknowledge an "Aytpical" Trigeminal Neuralgia.
Avatar m tn Could it be that mandibular nerve damage can develop tp TN?
738075 tn?1330575844 I woke up with Trigeminal Neuralgia last Thursday morning. I knew that was what it was, because I had it once seven years ago. This time it's SO much worse! I told myself I'd "tough it out" for the weekend, even though I did put in a call to my neurologist. By Sunday, it was so bad, I was in tears! I told my DH "just take me out back and shoot me like an old horse!" I was kidding, but kinda serious, too!
Avatar f tn 29pm in Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia Atypical Trigaminal Neuralgia  (ATN), or Type 2 Trigeminal Neuralgia , is a rare form of Trigeminal neuralgia, a disorder of the fifth cranial nerve. This may also be the most misdiagnosed form of neuralgia. The symptoms can be mistaken for migraines, dental problems such as TMJ, musculoskeletal issues, and hypochondriasis.
Avatar n tn This could be a trigeminal neuralgia. It can start after infections. Trigeminal neuralgia can be difficult to treat. There are some good medicines available for it. The pain of trigeminal neuralgia can be brought on by even a light touch of the fingers, Try medicines for TN and also take care of your allergy.
Avatar f tn Common cold, sinusitis, ear infection, sensory nerve compression, peripheral neuropathy as in diabetes, inflamed wisdom tooth, impacted wisdom tooth, dental caries, etc can all cause facial numbness and pain. Hemi facial numbness is also seen in Bell’s palsy, trigeminal neuralgia where a spasm may cause numbness, or due to acoustic neuroma which is a benign tumor of the eighth cranial nerve. Maybe the accidental injury aggravated any of the above reasons.
