I have been on fenofibrate (generic Tricor) for a few years. My triglycerides are 200 still, my LDL is high 180s I think. My HDL is 38 they like them in 40s. I recently went to the ER 3x in that many months with pain in my chest. I thought heart attack. Turns out I have gallstones. I did research Tricor can cause gallstones. It turns out they are made of cholesterol. My blood pressure med Nadolol (generic Corgard) raises Triglycerides and lowers good cholesterol! Ask for Lovaza it is omega 3.
My doctor just started me on Tricor and my blood sugar levels have gone up as well. Prior to being on Tricor, my fasting blood sugar has always been between 89 and 101. Now they range from 119 to 125. Any thoughts on alternative medications to lower high tryglicerides?
My brother and I take both a statin for our high cholestorol and Tricor for the high trigs. Our blood is so thick with fat we have no choice but to take these meds. On the meds are levels are almost perfect. Without we are doomed. Try doing a search on familial hypercholesterolemia or familial hypertriglyceridemia for more information.
I have been on the Tricor now for the last several months. I did fast this time for my lipid panel and I had been on the Tricor for about 3 weeks when they tested me last and my trigs had dropped considerably. I would have to ask what time did you have your blood drawn? Had it been about 12 hours after that dinner and drinks? Even if it hadn't I would ask to have the test again and if it is still high consider taking meds for that.
Yes, Tricor is great for TGLs. It is a fenofibrate, is very effective, has few side effects and safe with other drugs like statns. You can also avoid empty carbs like sugars, pasta and bread. Also, don't drink as that will increase TGLs. He also needs to get his LDL down and HDL up. These numbers could well be drivien by his thyroid as it controls one's metabolism which controls your lipids.
High cholesterol runs in my family so even with diet and exercise my numbers are still a little high. I started getting heart palpitations a few years ago and after a lot of testing was told they were harmless PVC's/PAC's. Well, I stoped taking my Tricor and Zocor for a few months and my heart palps were gone. The problem is that my cholesterol numbers went back up. I started back on the statins and low and behold the palps returned.
My brother and I both have this and it is totally under control with meds for both of us. My triglycerides were over 2100 before I started taking Tricor. My brother takes Tricor and Lovastatin. Both of us now have normal readings.
Has the doctor prescribed a statin for you to take. I know my triglycerides were over 2100. I looked this up on the internet and found that it is called familial hypercholesterolemia. I was given Tricor and Lovastatin to control this. Now my cholesterol is in normal range.
My triglycerides were still at 925 last month. At one point 2 years ago they were over 2100. In my case it's a genetic thing. 2 of my brothers have the same problem. I now take my meds which are Tricor and Pravastatin. But in addition to those I take 500mg of Niacin in the morning and again in the evening. He needs to get that number down because I have had multiple heart attacks from the plaque in my blood. And that comes from the high levels of triglycerides in the blood.
You asked if I had Diabetes
I have a strong family history of Diabetes and take Tricor for cholesterol (actually high Triglycerides) but get my blood checked every 6 months and sugars levels are never even close to a problem.
A peripheral sypmtom I did not mention is the loss of the sense of smell but I have had ongoing sinusitus and sinus surgery over the years.
I tried the diet, exercise and Omega 3 Fish oil alternative and finally gave in when my triglycerides hit 2100. The Tricor has corrected that problem. So it's a matter of peference and what you are comfortable with.
I am also on Tricor, it has done wonders for me as well. You can come off cholesterol meds. Once you have made the necessary lifestyle changes and your numbers are low, it is not uncommon to come off them for a period to see if you can maintain a health level of cholesterol.
Your HDL should be the larger concern.
I have been on a plant based diet for about a month also avoiding most oils and nos soft drinks of any kind. Also I take 1200 mgs of fish oil daily. I had high Triglyceride and low HDL reading a few years back when I was tested. At that point they said I had a fatty liver also. The test results now are;
Total Cholesterol 153
Triglycerides 258
HDL 28
LDL 73
Chol to HDL ratio 5.5
LDL HDL ratio 2.
I also take 25mg of HCTZ (water pill, basically) and 145mg of Tricor, which is for triglycerides. I also take 1200mg of Fish Oil and Flax Seed Oil pills for my triglycerides and general health, as well as a multi-vitamin.
Doctors - I've been to a Cardiologist and had an EKG and a stress test--nothing wrong with my heart so far. The only thing that was weird about my blood test was my C-Reactive Protein levels were slightly elevated.

The way I see what you are saying, your husband has two different issues in the lipids and the thyroid.
With a TSH of 300 rather than 3.0 for example, which would be in normal range, and a free T4 of only point 11, your pituitary is trying desperately with enormous amounts of thyroid stimulating hormone to stimulate your husband's thyroid....
