My brother and I take both a statin for our high cholestorol and Tricor for the high trigs. Our blood is so thick with fat we have no choice but to take these meds. I have been on the Tricor now for the last several months. I did fast this time for my lipid panel and I had been on the Tricor for about 3 weeks when they tested me last and my trigs had dropped considerably. I would have to ask what time did you have your blood drawn? Had it been about 12 hours after that dinner and drinks? Even if it hadn't I would ask to have the test again and if it is still high consider taking meds for that.
Yes, Tricor is great for TGLs. It is a fenofibrate, is very effective, has few side effects and safe with other drugs like statns. You can also avoid empty carbs like sugars, pasta and bread. Also, don't drink as that will increase TGLs. He also needs to get his LDL down and HDL up. These numbers could well be drivien by his thyroid as it controls one's metabolism which controls your lipids.
I have been on fenofibrate (generic Tricor) for a few years. My triglycerides are 200 still, my LDL is high 180s I think. My HDL is 38 they like them in 40s. I recently went to the ER 3x in that many months with pain in my chest. I thought heart attack. Turns out I have gallstones. I did research Tricor can cause gallstones. It turns out they are made of cholesterol. My blood pressure med Nadolol (generic Corgard) raises Triglycerides and lowers good cholesterol! Ask for Lovaza it is omega 3.
High cholesterol runs in my family so even with diet and exercise my numbers are still a little high. I started getting heart palpitations a few years ago and after a lot of testing was told they were harmless PVC's/PAC's. Well, I stoped taking my Tricor and Zocor for a few months and my heart palps were gone. The problem is that my cholesterol numbers went back up. I started back on the statins and low and behold the palps returned.
Has the doctor prescribed a statin for you to take. I know my triglycerides were over 2100. I looked this up on the internet and found that it is called familial hypercholesterolemia. I was given Tricor and Lovastatin to control this. Now my cholesterol is in normal range.
And that comes from the high levels of triglycerides in the blood. That is the fat that causes the plaque to form. The Niacin is a good supplement in treating this.

You asked if I had Diabetes
I have a strong family history of Diabetes and take Tricor for cholesterol (actually high Triglycerides) but get my blood checked every 6 months and sugars levels are never even close to a problem.
A peripheral sypmtom I did not mention is the loss of the sense of smell but I have had ongoing sinusitus and sinus surgery over the years.
However at this time I think you need to be started on medication as well because those numbers are quite high. When Triglycerides are above 500 you run the risk of an inflamed pancreas which can be quite dangerous and life threatening. You most definitely have insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome. From those numbers you already have diabetes.
am not sure if stress affects it but i do know thats to high and you need to be on meds, i take tricor its a great med and my trics were over 600 got them down to 137 in 6 weeks
I am also on Tricor, it has done wonders for me as well. You can come off cholesterol meds. Once you have made the necessary lifestyle changes and your numbers are low, it is not uncommon to come off them for a period to see if you can maintain a health level of cholesterol.
Your HDL should be the larger concern.
I have been on a plant based diet for about a month also avoiding most oils and nos soft drinks of any kind. Also I take 1200 mgs of fish oil daily. I had high Triglyceride and low HDL reading a few years back when I was tested. At that point they said I had a fatty liver also. The test results now are;
Total Cholesterol 153
Triglycerides 258
HDL 28
LDL 73
Chol to HDL ratio 5.5
LDL HDL ratio 2.
I tried the diet, exercise and Omega 3 Fish oil alternative and finally gave in when my triglycerides hit 2100. The Tricor has corrected that problem. So it's a matter of peference and what you are comfortable with.
