Common Questions and Answers about Topamax kidney stones risk

topamax

Avatar f tn I have only been on Topamax for my migraines since November 2010 and by January I had four kidney stones. One in my left kidney and three in my right. Now I have been taken off Topamax and it was so far the best medication for my migraines I was on 100mg of Topamax and went from having a migraine everyday to once a month. I miss Topamax but the pain of my kidney stones was much worse.
214901 tn?1227567555 My doctor recently told me to stop taking it. I developed five kidney stones(3 in one, 2 in the other). Apparently Topamax can cause kidney stones! I wish my doctors had told me this a few years back! I would ask your doctor what side effects are normal, and what side effects might occur with this medication. Also ask about Metoporol for migranes. It worked for me. I hope you feel better. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Hi, i too have taken topamax I was on 200 mg for 3 years for chiari headaches and it didnt do anything for me as Selma said I too havent found a med that helps with chiari headaches and there are so many side effects like topamaz can cause kidney stones. I mean sometimes the treatment can cause worse problems. I have been put on zonigrine and its like topamax and its doing nothing for me so Im getting off of it. It too can cause kidney stones. Like we need anymore problems.
Avatar n tn diets that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates can increase the risk of kidney stones.
324184 tn?1308076203 If your daughter starts topamax, be sure to find a urologist. One of the major side effects of topamax is kidney stones. After taking it for my migraines for two years, I had kidney's full of stones. I have had three operations to rid myself of them and the surgery/recovery is very painful. The neurologist found out that I was in the hospital for a week ( the first time) and no kidding..yelled into the phone.. OH MY GOSH...ITS THE TOPAMAX!
681148 tn?1437661591 My friend who I mentioned earlier, she got kidney stones because of the topamax. This is one of the serious side-effects that topamax can cause, but it is a rare side-effect that only happens in some people. It can be avoided by most people as long as you drink and ENTIRE glass of water with every topamax pill you take. This is extremely important... never take topamax without water!!! But, for a very small number of people topamax can still cause kidney stones, which are extremely painful.
1781720 tn?1314842836 Usual side effects of topamax may include fatigue, impaired concentration, dizziness, and paresthesias (tingling, numbness, pins and needles sensation). Kidney stones, as mentioned by Eddie and sometimes weight loss are often observed with continued treatment. Dosage reduction is often done by your doctor to help with these side effects. Take care and regards.
202665 tn?1248806733 I feel like it works very well with the rest of my medications and have never experienced a kidney stone. My suggestion is to google what can cause kidney stones. My dad was getting them because he was drinking cokes every day. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn u do need to drink plenty of water to help avoid kidney stones.....but, with the same note ur dr should be doing regular labs to keep tabs on all that. Drs RX meds knowing they have side effects, just as surgeries have risks, but the benefits must out weight the risk for the dr to suggest it....u have to have a trust in ur dr. If not, get another opinion or ask ur dr if there is another treatment that would not have the side effects this med has.
1343409 tn?1296026007 I started taking Topamax my junior year of high school, then I found out I had 4 kidney stones. The doctors think that it might have been because of the topamax, but I wasn't drinking enough water with it, so I think that could have been the problem. I want to try again and make sure I drink plenty of water..trust me, this time I will..lesson learned. First I have to collect my urine for 24 hours and send it away to be tested to see if my kidneys are functioning well.
Avatar f tn Might want to consider checking into kidney stones...Topamax is known to cause a person to form them. I take Topamax for seizures and monitor possible side effects. Hope you get relief and find out soon. Please let us know what you are diagnosed.
1415174 tn?1453243103 t want to ruin my health by getting kidney stones, or osteoporosis and the other side effects but I dont' want to get in a car accident or fall down either. Can someone tell me their experiences with Topamax. I particularly want to know side effect you have experienced and also if you had vertigo too.
3144747 tn?1343049136 Some of the adverse effects associated with topamax include paresthesias (numbness/tingling), somnolence, dizziness, and risk for kidney stones. Weight loss is also a side effect that is commonly seen. If a patient’s tremor is very severe and refractory to medical treatment, sometimes more invasive procedures such as botox injection or deep brain stimulation are considered. But this would only be considered if medical options are exhausted.
Avatar n tn I've been on Topamax for over a year now and it did that to me at first too, the numbness or tingling, mostly in my toes, I started out at 50mg. and now have been on 75mg, for 6 mos. I will say for me, those side effects have gone away and personally the good out ways the bad, you see, I had a mild stroke from the migraine I had, I have hemiplegic migraines and to me it is worth a little discomfort rather than go through that again!
Avatar n tn ve also been speaking with someone I know whom is a chiropractor. I remember that I had kidney stones for over a year and a half. ( I thought I had a UTI and the test was negative for UTI but high in calcium and so they sent me to the urologist who then through the tests found the kidney stones and my ovarian cysts.) I was on special diets and lifestyle modifications and kept having to go to the urologist and follow up with my doctor over and over again, but I kept making more stones.
Avatar f tn The pain practically went away. I had severe kidney stones while I was on Topamax. I ended up hospitalized with a stone that got stuck and had to be retrieved out of the ureter. My right kidney started to fail because they did not know it was stuck. We thought we would wait for it to come out on it's own. After four days of waiting and no kidney stone, back to the hospital I went. They found out that my ureters were the size of a child the age of 8 or so.
Avatar f tn I wish I could take Topamax but apparently if you have a history of kidney stones is a no go! I picked up a stomach virus this week and had a few days of vomiting and all the other stuff that goes with it. OMG! my head hurt so so bad for 3 days. I wasnt able to move. It finally broke yesterday I was so so thankful. I think I would almost trade another kidney stone to never have that pain again!
Avatar f tn Come to find out I have two kidney stones one that is in the process of passing and one that is still in my kidney.. I am 27 weeks ... Has anybody else had kidney stones during their pregnancy? I'm honestly so miserable and I can't eat and I'm worried about my baby . Any suggestions ?
Avatar f tn As you have had/still have calcium oxalate stones, your risk of getting more kidney stones is much increased. Avoid the foods mentioned and browse the web for more information on oxalate rich foods that you should avoid or eat less of. It is also very important to always stay well hydrated. Your urologist may have advised you to drink 2 litres of fluids (4 pints) during the day, more if you are doing exercises that make you sweat or perspiring in hot weather.
5900973 tn?1396064391 I found out monday I have kidney stones for the 2nd time this pregnancy... :( I am going in friday for my csection and just hoping the pain eases up for me or that I just pass the dang stone... I dont want to be dealing with that after the birth. It just seems like bad timing, not that there is a good time for these things... Tmi but my urine looks like cranberry juice, kinda scary but I know its from the stone. I have been drinking tons of water.
Avatar f tn I before pregnancy is prone to kidney stones...which puts me s high risk! I know kidney stones are painful enough but to add pregnancy on top of it...its so much worse! I do hope the best for you and a fast recovery!
Avatar n tn Hi, Kidney stones form when the components of urine are out of balance. When this happens, the urine contains more crystal-forming substances, such as calcium and uric acid. Kidney stones are also prone to develop in highly acidic or highly alkaline urine. Sometimes, the underlying cause is an inherited metabolic disorder or kidney disease. Gout, inflammatory bowel disease and some medications promote specific types of kidney stones.
Avatar f tn m considered high risk due to kidney and gall stones. Taking the prenatal vitamins will cause me to develop large kidney stones because of the calcium in them. Also when your hormone levels raise during pregnancy they speed up the growth of gall stones. At anytime of the pregnancy I can have my kidneys shut down from a kidney stone that is to large to pass and an infection will develop. Also have a gall stone get to large and block off the gall bladder to the pancreas.
Avatar f tn the stones so they can analyze them) is the constituents of the stones. I believe a common kidney stone is made up of calcium oxylate. If your stone has some other makeup, it can be telling as to the cause of your condition. The majority of mine was not calcium oxylate, but the "lead" that gave the docs turned out to be a dead end, so I guess all my efforts to catch that little bugger were for naught. Ah well, at least I got to see my foe!! Sigh.
Avatar n tn Since that time she has been treated for endometriosis, kidney stones and now this false tumor. While hospitialized, a lumbar puncture was done and medication given to her. However the lumbar puncture caused her vein to collapse so they took it out. Next, they did a procedure where they snaked a a type of flexible wire through her artery in up her arm to send medication directly through the artery, past the heart.
Avatar f tn http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/kidney-stones/basics/risk-factors/con-20024829 This has helpful medical information that your doctor would be able to understand and discuss with you about more uncommon causes: http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/239278-overview. Its important to remember that kidney stones are not uncommon and are easily treatable if followed up on. The other conditions are clinically rare.
Avatar n tn This can cause pressure and pain, along with the risk of kidney damage, bleeding and infection. Smaller stones may partially block the thin tubes that connect each kidney to your bladder or the outlet from the bladder itself. These stones may cause ongoing urinary tract infections or kidney damage if left untreated. Treatment options: Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). This is a commonly used procedure for treating kidney stones.
