Common Questions and Answers about Topamax kidney stone

topamax

Avatar f tn I have only been on Topamax for my migraines since November 2010 and by January I had four kidney stones. One in my left kidney and three in my right. Now I have been taken off Topamax and it was so far the best medication for my migraines I was on 100mg of Topamax and went from having a migraine everyday to once a month. I miss Topamax but the pain of my kidney stones was much worse.
1781720 tn?1314842836 t had any harmful side-effects as of yet. She did have a kidney stone last year but passed it before it could be analyzed. Topomax is known to cause this in some patients. Weight loss and some tasteless food is also a secondary side-effect she has had to tolerate. If you think your sodas taste funny, it's probably not the soda but your tastebuds.
635356 tn?1259351051 It is important to remember however that while taking topamax the tendency of kidney stone formation increases so take plenty of fluids with this medication. Also if you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember it but do not under any condition take two doses together. Topamax depresses the central nervous system so alcohol and sedatives should be taken with caution. Good luck and keep us posted.
202665 tn?1248806733 I feel like it works very well with the rest of my medications and have never experienced a kidney stone. My suggestion is to google what can cause kidney stones. My dad was getting them because he was drinking cokes every day. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn I wish I could take Topamax but apparently if you have a history of kidney stones is a no go! I picked up a stomach virus this week and had a few days of vomiting and all the other stuff that goes with it. OMG! my head hurt so so bad for 3 days. I wasnt able to move. It finally broke yesterday I was so so thankful. I think I would almost trade another kidney stone to never have that pain again!
681148 tn?1437661591 never take topamax without water!!! But, for a very small number of people topamax can still cause kidney stones, which are extremely painful. My friend stayed on the topamax because without it she would be completely disabled and no other medication works for her... the kidney stones are something she would rather deal with than be completely physically disabled, but her situation is very severe and if I got kidney stones I would personally cease the medication.
587778 tn?1261397118 It turns out that the reason that my left kidney is enlarged is because of a stone. I did not have any problems before taking this medication. A group of doctors consulted me in the ER and all agreed that my dosage of Topamax, 100 mg 2X's a day, is two much!!! Upon further conversation, I learned that by neurologist was supposed to gradually increase my dosage to that amount. And reading the rest of the blogs, I see that nearly everyone was gradually giving Topamax in doses of 25mg.
Avatar f tn The pain practically went away. I had severe kidney stones while I was on Topamax. I ended up hospitalized with a stone that got stuck and had to be retrieved out of the ureter. My right kidney started to fail because they did not know it was stuck. We thought we would wait for it to come out on it's own. After four days of waiting and no kidney stone, back to the hospital I went. They found out that my ureters were the size of a child the age of 8 or so.
Avatar n tn I was taking Topamax, but it started my period up extremely heavy and painful. I do have Fibroid tumors in my uterus. Do you think it was the cause of it and if so do you know of something else I can go on to help with weight loss?
Avatar n tn I'm 37 years old female. I had a CT scan and found many stone on both kidney. What does it mean? MSK or other ? Thank you.
Avatar n tn The chiropractor found out and gave me an adjustment once, and I never had another kidney stone to this day. That was a few years ago. So, at this point, I am going to cooperate with my neurologist and my primary care physician.
Avatar m tn i had a kidney stone a week ago, had surgery, had stent in and the stent was just removed a few days ago. i have been in severe pain ever since, especially in the lower of left kidney. i have to urinate every couple of hours , the flow of urine is normal, and then the pain worsen. its almost unbearable. flomax, cipro, .The urologist told me I was not going to have any more kidney pain after stent removal.
Avatar m tn I presently do have an appointment scheduled for a second opinion with another Urologist, but to me, that reports sounds like I have a kidney stone and from what I read, it sounds like that could be causing some of my problems...I don't know for sure, but to me it sounds it. I know I am not a Dr. and if he says it is ok, then I have to believe that. I also read where if a stone is in the lower pole, it is less likely to pass on its own??? Can others shed some light to me?
Avatar f tn Typically the pain from a kidney stone is when the stone is higher up in ur ureter before it enters ur bladder. It blocks the flow of urine and this is very painful. Actually peeing out the stone can be relatively pain free.
Avatar f tn But im still having really sharp srabbing pain in my left side below my ribs but above my pelvis. I think its kidney stone but my mom says a kidney stone will be bad enough I will know I need to go to the ER for it. Any mommas here have experience with them? And what to do for them?

107860 tn?1302926740 When I was seven or eight months pregnant I found out that I have a kidney stone. ( found out do blood in my urine) The doctor told me it's the size of my pinkey finger. I've had some minor pain, later on I had an x-ray, ct done, and now they cannot find it, I know I didn't pass it. Now the doctor wants me to have an ultrasound. Why cannot they find it? Should I wait to have it removed to concive again??
5739386 tn?1378836460 Went to the doctors about 45 min ago. Was having back pain and feeling sick dizzy and threw up. Well I'm at the hospital again second time in a week. And my doctor want to do a ultrasound on my kidneys to make sure I don't have a kidney stone. Any one have a kidney stone while pregnant. What happens?
Avatar m tn Do any of the home remedies for passing a kidney stone really work or are they, as I suspect, a load of crap? Also, I have no medical insurance or means to pay for add'l trips to the hospital, I still haven't paid for the last trip, so unless or until it becomes life threatening going to the Doctor is not feasible. Thanks for any tips.
Avatar m tn Is it necessay to forcebly remove it ? What can be done for the 3 mm stone laying in the kidney ? Please give me your expert advice. Thankyou.
Avatar m tn Since the pain occurs on an off, could i be developing or having a stone someweher in the kidney or ureter??? Do i have to have RBC in urine to rule out that there is a stone... Please advise as this is a mental trauma until ruled out..
Avatar n tn Hi there, Kidney stones are common these days. A stone usually stays inside one of your kidneys, it usually doesn't cause a problem unless it becomes so large it blocks the flow of urine. This can cause pressure and pain, along with the risk of kidney damage, bleeding and infection. Smaller stones may partially block the thin tubes that connect each kidney to your bladder or the outlet from the bladder itself.
Avatar m tn whe a kidney stone is stuck in a ureter tube and is not allowing fluid to pass from the kidney to the bladder why would you put a stent in the uterer tube instead of removing the kidney stone???
896273 tn?1241699918 There’s a saying which goes as “once a stone former, always a stone former.” However, one can always reduce the risk of developing a stone and it can be done by taking adequate amount of fluids daily. A rough estimate of the same can be inferred from the colour of the urine. Make sure that your colour of the urine remains whitish/colourless just like water. If it’s yellow, it means you are not drinking adequate fluids. Drinking lemon juice does help in preventing formation of the stones.
Avatar n tn I've had kidney stones twice. First time I had severe pain in one of my kidneys. Second time I didn't know I had kidney stones until I was urinating blood. Then the pain set in. Not fun either time.
