Avatar m tn I got a call from my doctor today. I've been told, I have low thyroid and I would have to come into my GP's office. Is there some reason I need to see the Doctor AGAIN. Can't this medication just be phoned into the Rx? Should I get a referral to a specialist?

Avatar f tn My latest labs show low TSH and "low thyroid" (according to the nurse) Am now waiting for the scan in 3 more weeks. What is the Dr. looking for?
Avatar f tn s not unusual for TSH to be low when on thyroid med. Almost as soon as I was put on thyroid med, my TSH went to the basement and my doctor tried doing the same thing yours did - take away my med. I felt horrible because I was so hypo, but he insisted that I was hyper - I ended up having to get a different doctor (and an endo). My TSH currently runs at < 0.01 all the time. While my pcp still wants to adjust based on TSH, I refuse to let him.
Avatar f tn If you are not taking a replacement thyroid hormone, you may need anti-thyroid medication to stop your thyroid from over producing.
Avatar f tn If not on thyroid medication then you need additional testing to determine cause of the low TSH. If taking thyroid medication, that frequently will result in a suppressed TSH and is the basis for the following comments. When taking thyroid medication, a suppressed TSH does not automatically mean that you are hyper, unless you are experiencing hyper symptoms that are a result of excessive levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4.
Avatar f tn You would need thyroid meds to bring your thyroid hormone levels up (probably mid to upper half of the reference range, depending on how you feel). In some cases a raised TSH may lag well behind the symptoms. In any case you should be monitoring and adjusting based on FT3 and FT4 results, ignoring TSH. What did your doctor say?
Avatar n tn Per goolarra's questions - we need to know whether you have been diagnosed with a thyroid condition and/or are taking any type of thyroid medication. Exactly how low is your TSH? As goolarra said, TSH can fluctuate wildly, even intraday, so having it drop over the course of a year, is not surprising. We also need to know what other thyroid tests have been done and what those results and reference ranges are.
Avatar f tn I went to the thyroid doctor yesterday because of a low TSH, after questioning me she says because of your age will remove the thyroid. This is before she even wrote all the test I was to have done. I told her no way would I remove my thyroid if it turns out to be hyperthyroidism. She said she could give me medication for hyperthyroidism by because of liver damage from Hep C she would be able to give medication for hyperthyroidism.
Avatar f tn Low TSH means you are hyper thyroid and high TSH means you are hypo thyroid. Without knowing your actual numbers its hard to say which one you are. Each of them have different symptoms, but extreme fatigue is correlated with hypo and hyper. Having low TSH will not affect your tx outcome, but it will affect how you feel on tx. Your probably feeling lethargic from the meds and abnormal TSH levels intensifies your lack of energy.
Avatar n tn Yes. And your FT4 is in the low range. Don't look at the TSH. That doesn't paint the full thyroid picture. It is a pituitary hormone. They HAVE to treat your Hashi, so they can get those antibodies under control. If not, you will get worse, and your FT4/FT3 will go lower.
1827985 tn?1320324225 How does low thriod effect my health and what can I do to help fight this problem? I am taking my medicine for this but it doen't seem to be helping much.
Avatar f tn I have lots and lots of data supporting the contention that suppressed TSH is not a cause for alarm, unless there are also hyper symptoms due to excessive levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones. If the active thyroid hormones FT3, and FT4 are actually still within the reference ranges that the doctors use so much, then how can there be a concern with a low TSH?
Avatar n tn Your thyroid produces the hormone T4 which is converted mostly by the liver, although on its way it comes into contact with protein, some is carried away by this protein, what gets converted is Free T4, after conversion, the contact with protein occurs again, some T3 is carried away, once it contacts protein, it is not usable by the bodies cells, so what is left is Free T3, the active hormone your body functiosn by, when ths hormone is low, your body slows down (Decreased Metabolism) The Pituita
Avatar m tn I also want to mention that Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin can also cause symptoms that mimic those of hypothyroidism, plus deficiencies can affect how well thyroid hormone is metabolized. Since hypo patients are frequently too low in the ranges for those 3 as well, it would be good to have those tested.
Avatar n tn I think they screened for all thyroid results, just my tsh and t4 came back both low. The reason they want me to see an endo doctor is b/c the t4 came back low as well. I tried looking online for answers but it would make more sense to me to have hypothyroidism not hyper. When you have hyper, does it in generally mean you are a thin person? I need to read more on the issue.
