Common Questions and Answers about Thumb pain weakness

Avatar f tn I've had both thumb weakness that comes and goes for a few years. It really got bad after pouring a bottle of wine, where my thumb went weak, numb and tingled and i almost dropped the bottle. i've never had pain per se, it's just uncomfortable, just like when your arm goes asleep. i saw an ortho doc who got an emg which showed bilateral carpal tunnel. he even got a cervical spine MRI b/c it seemed to occur in both hands at the same time.
Avatar f tn Gee, it is hard to know. Of course it can easily be the MS. It could also be a pinched nerve. The reason I know this is because my husband has a pinched nerve in his neck and often he complains of the same thingl I would ask my neuro. Then make a decision.
Avatar n tn I can pop the third thumb joint every now and then by pulling on the thumb or squeezing the wrist and it feels wonderful to do, usually in the morning when I wake up. The pain stops. I have no weakness at all, just pain. I skateborded as a kid and had my share of falls, I'm twenty six now. I used to pop that third joint by pulling on my thumb as a kid, usually after falls. This just started up again recently. Any ideas and possible things to do like a brace?
Avatar m tn I am thouch sensible in the right part of head and neck, strange feeling in left foot, pain in left side of the back. Righ side I have a other pain sensasion than left. I have been affected cognitive (do not now if it is the disease or lack of proper exercise due to sickdom). I am a bachelor in chemistry, but everything falls out of my hands. Have always been a kind of bright, but the troubles make me to walk as pain reliever and other.
Avatar f tn About 5 years ago I began having pain and weakness in my thumbs. The pain radiates into my elbow area and even seems to be triggered by certain positions. This morning I awoke with pain and clicking in my right thumb. Additionally, there is swelling in the thumb and a soreness into the heel of my hand (where thumb connects to hand). I am taking meds for migraine/stroke (Plavix, verapamil, lasix, lisinopril, along with thyroid replacement therapy and some allergy prescriptions.
Avatar m tn Thanks for the reply. I haven't noticed any pain or weakness in lower extremities. Pain has been moving around, has improved greatly, sometimes absent, but when present is always either in upper/center of back, right shoulder, right arm pit, or right arm (or all of the above). Index finger and thumb are constantly numb, some times worse than others. I type a lot (computer repair), and that seems to aggravate it. Could it possibly be carpel tunnel? Could that be causing pain in my back?
Avatar m tn The pain is almost gone but I remain with weakness in my right thumb, index finger and pinky. I can barely lift them. I was told that I had a pinched nerve in the C6 area either from the disk or more likely from contraction of the right pectoralis minor or scalene muscles. Should I expect the strength in my fingers to return? What can I told to speed up the process?
Avatar n tn I had a pain in my right arm last night. It was not painful to the touch but it was a tingle/piercing pain that went from the beginning of my hand to my elbow. it has never happened before and i am worried.
Avatar m tn Since Xmas experienced a tightness pressure type ache/pain in bicep/underarm area, pains in forearm sometimes and a developing stiffness / arthritic feel in left hand fingers and ache in thumb when rotated. Can still do full range of movement pinch fine and no obvious weakness/failure. Other symptoms, left elbow started to make an audible crackle (not popping) sound as it’s bent, since Xmas. Thinking I may see a neuro or should I wait longer or for weakness to bother anyone.
Avatar f tn I have shooting pains in my right thumb and sometimes weakness in it. It hurts worse after using my thumb a lot. I wake up with my hand asleep and last night I woke up with that whole arm asleep and hurting. My wrist cracks badly in that hand as well. It hurts to bend my thumb sometimes too. Sometimes my wrist hurts but recently its been more in my thumb. I was wondering if this was carpal tunnel or if any one had any other ideas?
Avatar n tn I have taken antiviral drugs and am now on some antidepressants at night which seem to help the pain and control and I take pain killers for the nettle effect. I have also noticed a marked drop in my gripping power. and the muscles on the outside of my hand and between thumb and first finger seem to be shrinking by the day. I wonder if there is anything I can do to help this.
Avatar m tn The pain in the shoulder blade and arm was excruciating when I sat and very strong when I walked. I could lie down on my back with no problem. The pain is gone but I remain with weakness in my right thumb, index finger and pinky. I can barely lift them. I did an EMG, which revealed chronic reinervation changes in all tested muscles, more severe in the right arm.
Avatar m tn Basically, about a month ago, I started noticing weakness in my left thumb. It was slight, but distinctly there. Over the course of the weeks since, that weakness has spread to my left pinky, left forefinger, right thumb, right ring finger, and right pinky. The rate of progression has increased recently and today, I had trouble squeezing a mustard bottle with my right hand (my right pinky would essentially collapse flat at the 2nd hinge from lack of strength).
4544656 tn?1371593548 I don't have any pain. Just weakness. I haven't been very active due to the weakness. I used to ski and snowboard, but I can't now. Since the weather has been warmer, and the snow is melting, I have been forcing myself to walk about 2-3 miles a few times a week. It's not easy, but I do it. My labs from January while on 75 mgs Armour, 25 mcgs Synthroid. FT3 3.12 (2.3-4.2) FT4 1.09 (0.76-1.46) RT3 18 (9.0-27.0) My symptoms now are the same as then.
Avatar m tn Ok, so for a while now (about a couple of months) my thumb constantly twitches just like I fell this strange feeling in my thumb and my thumb just moves back in forth quickly for a couple of seconds then stops but none of my other fingers do that and have never twitched before i don't know what it is it doesn't hurt or anything it's just weird. I want to know what this is, and how can I fix it?
Avatar n tn Numbness and tingling along with pain can radiate to the thumb side of hand. Cervical myelopathy can result in subtle changes in the hands and their functioning. Hands become clumsier, may drop objects more often, difficulty in unbuttoning shirt, the gait may become wobbly. At times brain doesn’t know exactly where their legs are in time and space. Extreme cases patients may develop more profound weakness and numbness in their arms and legs. Rarely bowel and bladder changes also develop.
Avatar f tn in my thumb, particularly in the flexor tendon area. Iced it finished my shift. The next day it was very swollen and extremely sore. I went to an urgent care center who diagnosed me with tendinitis . Put it in a simple splint followed by 3 weeks of pain control physical therapy with no improvement. Went to a hand specialist who xrayed it, negative for fracture, etc. She put me in a cast for 3 weeks to immobilize the area, told me it was tendinitis/sprain. Cast came off..
1138632 tn?1260813619 Over the summer I awoke in the night with pain in my Left hand, below the index and thumb finger. The next morning the hand became more painful, weak, and made it difficult to grasp items. The function returned after a few days. But during that time my arm was tingly, my Left foot & leg also began to tingle. The tingle lasted in my hand off/on for a few weeks. The Left leg tingle lasted for nearly 2 months on/off.
Avatar m tn If the twitching in your thumb and the feeling of weakness in your arms and hands persist and continue to worry you, I suggest you make an appointment with your physician and explain your symptoms in full. A medical professional will be better able to shed some light on what's going on with you. I, personally have been feeling pain in my arms and hands.
Avatar f tn lost use to bend thumb about 2 months ago and also index finger (unable to bend at second knuckle, the one closest to the nail) my forearm is numb and coordination in my left hand is starting to get weak and have pain in my thumb like the tendons are getting shorter and its being pulled into my had, with random sharp shooting pains!! has anyone had/head of this not being able to use my thumb!?
Avatar f tn Hi, this is my first post. I have not been officially diagnosed, but my optho-neurologist has said she thinks that I have "an autoimmune disorder affecting my CNS". I have multiple, small hyper-intensities on MRI of the brain. EMG is normal, VEP normal, labs (ie, ANA) for other disorders normal. Waiting to have another 'flare' and then will have LP. I've had broad symptoms for a number of years, most notably vertigo and paresthesias on arms and legs.
Avatar n tn About 4 months ago I started with pain everytime I bent my thumb. Unless that I bent it there's no pain. Gradually the same thing happened to my little finger and now most of my fingers. When I knock them they hurt a lot and when I'm in contact with ice(for example searching for food in the freezer) they hurt and become very sensitive.
Avatar m tn A cause of numbness of the index finger and middle finger is carpal tunnel syndrome. It usually also has sensory changes of the palm at the thumb, index and middle fingers, and the ring finger on the side near the middle finger. I am not sure if you have these other features or not, but carpal tunnel syndrome is a compression/entrapment syndrome of the median nerve at the wrist. It usually results from excessive use of hands and occupational “microtrauma”.
Avatar f tn Following that, on Saturday he went to play badminton and after that he started experiencing weakness of the whole arm as well as numbness in the right thumb, index finger and middle finger. On Monday, the weakness got so bad he couldn’t shave and couldn’t reach into his back pocket. Fast forward to Friday and he still has the weakness and numbness although not as bad as on Monday but still not getting better. We had an MRI brain done but it does not show a stroke.
Avatar n tn between index finger and thumb on my left had has been hurting about 3 weeks. It hurts when I first use my thumb and seems to die down but has intermittent flares with continued use. I chalked it up to texting thumb. So that's where I am right now. Scared out of my mind wondering if I have initial ALS symptoms. 20 years in the service with no fear (not deployed to the gulf so I think I'm sheltered form the higher risk).
Avatar f tn This type of pain and weakness can originate in conditions such as MS, ALS, micronutrient deficiency (like vitamin B), and most commonly, due to stress. Fibromyalgia is also a common occurrence resulting in the same symptoms you are experiencing. As there can be several possibilities, I suggest that you have yourself checked by your doctor, preferrable a neurologist so that you can be assessed and treated properly. I hope you can be rid of this pain soon. Regards and God bless.
