Avatar m tn 7 suggesting mild to severe osteopenia. Teriparatide may not be necessary but is ‘highly suggested’, atleast in the initial part of the treatment till some improvement is seen. 3. Though parathormone causes bone resorption, intermittent usage would promote more calcium deposition more than resorption and would still be effective. Hope this is helpful. Take care!
Nicelady Teriparatide (Forteo) is also approved for the treatment of postmenopausal women who have severe osteoporosis and are considered at high risk for fractures. The medicine is given through daily shots underneath the skin and you can give these shots even at home. Another advantage is that it can be given in patients who cannot tolerate oral biphosphonate drugs.

Avatar f tn Not only should your symptoms (or lack thereof) be considered as part of your treatment, they should be THE most important part of your treatment (my non-medical opinion, of course) After all, symptom relief is what we're all after. Is your doctor testing FT3 and FT4 along with TSH? These are the actual thyroid hormones (TSH is a pituitary hormone) and give a much petter picture of thyroid status.
Avatar n tn I am a 59 year old female. The reading on my bone density test is minus 4.1 for my spine and minus 2.6 for my legs and hip. However, my doctor isn't prescribing any medication for me but tells me to continue taking calcium supplement and Vitamin D and come back in a year to do another test. Since I am obviously having osteoporosis, shouldn't I be taking any prescription drug? I am worried sick over the reading and need some expert opinion to go back and talk to my doctor again.
Avatar n tn I posted her in 2008. I've learned a lot since. I think Prevacid is a PPI. Ask your pharmacist. PPI's inhibit the absorbtion of calcium. I asked my gastrointerologist and he said "yes it does". I read that people who take PPI's for a long time, should take small breaks of treatment so they can absorb calcium. I'm NOT telling anyone to do this-follow your doctor's advise. I also had my Vit.D checked and it was extremely low.

605893 tn?1220181685 Hello jaybird1959, Yes, it is likely the osteoporosis can be all over the spine. Osteoporosis is a disease of bone that leads to an increased risk of fracture. In osteoporosis the bone mineral density is reduced, bone microarchitecture is disrupted, and the amount and variety of non-collagenous proteins in bone is altered.
Avatar m tn Some professionals think that it is a precursor to the development of osteoporosis, a type of bone disease. Despite this, not all cases of osteopenia lead to that condition. Causes Various factors can be behind the development of osteopenia. As mentioned, people with hypothyroidism may have this issue show up. Due to the loss of estrogen, it is relatively common in post-menopausal females. Certain lifestyle factors can also worsen the condition.
Avatar n tn There are reports that link people taking IV fosamx to osteonecrosis of the bone having oral and maxilofacial surgery. Treatment really depends upon degree of severity. Most of the time patients are advised hyperbaric chambers.
Avatar f tn Synthetic calcitonin, known as miacalcin, is FDA approved for the treatment of osteoporosis. When sprayed into the nose, miacalcin is quickly absorbed into the blood stream. It may be also be taken as a subcutaneous injection. Miacalcin has also been shown to decrease bone pain associated with bone fractures caused by osteoporosis. In addition, it appears to be quite beneficial in preventing bone loss after liver transplantation.

Avatar f tn My concern is the complications of the bone marrow biopsy at this point. And if the treatment will be the same (i.e.: blood products and Epogen) regardless of the actual diagnosis, should we go ahead with the bone marrow biopsy.
Avatar m tn //hormonerestoration.com/files/ThyroidPMD.pdf I would push the doctor to test all the possible causes of bone loss and identify which areas are deficient.
Avatar f tn Thank you so much for your response. Osteoporosis is a horrible disease, but many of the treatments have side effects which are even worse. It's not that I don't trust doctors, but they rely on information supplied by drug companies who are out to make a profit. And the long-term effects of some of the drugs used for treatment aren't even known yet. I'm still undecided about taking Evista.

7469840 tn?1409845836 I would not trust just any old Family Practive doctor or PCP. You want someone who specializes in Osteoporosis and who will tailor the treatment to you. Best of luck.
Avatar f tn Stress fractures themselves are not indicative of osteoporosis. Fragility fractures-- which include a fracture of the hip, pelvis, wrist, spine, or shoulder sustained during a fall from standing height-- are concerning for osteoporosis. It is probably worth a baseline screening with a DXA scan, along with a basic panel of labs evaluating for possible secondary causes of low bone density/recurrent stress fractures. If nothing else, this will provide reassurance.
231441 tn?1333892766 Only raging out of control hyper causes osteoporosis, not controlled medicated treatment. And if we are not properly treated our risk of heart disease goes through the roof! My first reply from a med student friend was 'Of course it's caused by your thryoid meds". You need to stop taking the hyroid meds and it should improve. Like sure! If I stop taking these meds and I don't have a functional thyroid, I will die. That is a permanent solution!
