My mother in law is 66 and was diagnosed with osteoporosis 6 months ago, but only Calcium tablets were advised then. A detailed bone density test was done now. The doctor has prescribed annual Zoledronic acid injection (Novartis ), and Teriparatide injections . My questions are:
1) Should oral Bisphosphanates be preferred over intravenous ?
2) Will Bisphosphonates be sufficient in this case, or are Teriparatides needed ?
Medications themselves can be classified as antiresorptive or bone anabolic agents. Teriparatide (Forteo) is also approved for the treatment of postmenopausal women who have severe osteoporosis and are considered at high risk for fractures. The medicine is given through daily shots underneath the skin and you can give these shots even at home. Another advantage is that it can be given in patients who cannot tolerate oral biphosphonate drugs.
Your doctor (after consulting his PDR, if necessary) or your pharmacist should be able to provide the name and address of the pharmaceutical company that makes the drug in which you are interested. (Or you could do an Internet search for it, if you don't want to bother them.)
You might also want to contact the National Osteoporosis Foundation for more information about that diagnosis, and possible sources of assistance for treatment of it.

s flare, severe nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss of 18 lbs in last 6 weeks,steatorrhea, pain in mid chest and right upper quadrant. Had CT scan 2 weeks ago which showed significant inflammation in terminal ileum and old pancreatitis with calcification. Gastroscopy last week showed oesphagitis.Biopsies taken. MRI scan Nov 2007 showed two strictures in small intestine. Gastro has advised following until I see him in clinic 23 July:
Double my mtx injections to 25 mg weekly.
Aromatase inhibitors would be too much for my system with joint pain and the chance for ostopenia or worse, osteoporosis.
As much as I miss my estrogen, I do want it blocked because it fed my cancer and I do not want to have to deal with that again.
Also, would it perhaps be possible to add some alendronate, or something else to help her bone density and still be able to benefit from the thyroid medication? Thank you so much!
I took my first dose of Alendronate and then experience significant muscle pain for the next 4 days. Does anyone know if I should expect this to happen each time I take it or is it something to happen for the first few times until my body adjusts to the medicine?
I would like to read it since it indicates that hepatitis C may be a factor in osteoporosis. I have lost 1 1/2 inches in height over the last few years and find that very disturbing. IT would definitely be one more reason to get rid of this d**m virus.
56-660) and renine conc. 35.0 ng/L (range; 3.5-28.5). My cortisol is also very low and dr. mentioned a disturbance in glucocorticoid metabolism, which I don't understand even when I google it. The rest seems ok, given the range they're in.
The reason I got this test done is because I'm very tired and have a constant headache that peaks around my period. It all seems hormonal to me.

All corticosteroids increase calcium excretion.
Treatment is with glucocorticoid (a corticosteroid steroid) ointments, creams or lotions. They do not cure eczema, but are highly effective in controlling or suppressing symptoms in most cases.
Since Alcortin contains anti-bacterial, anti-fungal as well as steroid medications it would be safe to use this to treat the condition with this.

my mum has had it for a few years now, she i am told is quite frail, she is only 58 and is doing everything she can to help herself, the situation is she needs a hip replacement too, and won't go to an orthopod to discuss the hip, it causes her constant pain. however, she is always in pain with it, and the doctor does not seam to think that all the pain is coming from the hip, but they can't say where the pain is coming from....
My bones were good 2 years ago at the time of my first bone density scan; no osteoporosis or osteopenia at all.
This time around, I was found to have severe osteoporosis (T-score of -4), but only in one area: my right femur and hip. Among the report's finding is this comment: "Asymmetry is significant." My spine and left hip and femur are fine.
This may be unusual, but it can obviously happen.
weird, i think the danger zones are 2.4 osteopenia and then 2.
