I would encourage both of you to talk with his endocrinologist about looking into possible changes that can bring his a1c levels well down below 7. That truly is his best protection not only against kidney disease, but against other complications. If sugar levels are maintained at near normal levels, damage cannot happen.
I have a 14 year old cocker spaniel who was recently diagnosed with kidney disease. She originally got sick a few weeks ago with pacreatitis, and when she recovered her lab work showed the kidney problems. We have been giving her fluids every other night as well as the epakitin powder with her food. Her blood report was better this last time. However she seems pretty good, has a good appetite ect and I'm wondering if there is anything else that could be causing this disease?

I was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease about 2 years ago and now I am in complete kidney failure. As for time no one can tell you that. But my advice to you is to take your meds as your doctor tells you and take good care of yourself. I did not follow my doctors advice and now I am on dialysis 3 times a week 4 hours a day.
Why do you consider a kidney problem at this point? Kidney disease may present with altered mentation but only in its severe forms . Let’s start with your thyroid function test. Also, try to share your concerns with family and friends. You need to vent out your feelings and worries as this may also provide relief. In fact, this is therapy in itself.
Eat well and sleep well.
