Avatar m tn A prenatal diagnosis of polycystic kidney disease by DNA testing is possible. Evidence showing a linkage between the disease and the DNA markers on chromosome 16 can be obtained in the affected family by linkage analysis and homogeneity testing with families of the linked type. Prenatal diagnosis is performed either by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Diagnostic results are available by PCR analysis in a few hours and then confirmed by Southern blotting method.
168348 tn?1379357075 A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). Is this disease controllable? What type of doctor handles it? A Nephrologist I guess versus a Urologist? Is it hereditary in all generations or does it skip? I found this info on MedHelp which is really helpful but was wondering if anybody else has more info to share. http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn Medullary Sponge Kidney; and Medullary Cystic Disease. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease accounts for 8-10 percent and diagnosis is usually suspected in those with an affected family members, those with clinical complains compatible with ADPKD, and those in whom multiple cysts are found incidentally during renal or abdominal imaging. Take care and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn Other causes of nodule on kidney are a cyst, kidney disease, polycystic kidney disease or kidney cancer. It is advisable to consult your attending doctor and discuss your concerns. He may further refer you to a nephrologist for appropriate diagnosis and management. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. I hope you find this information useful. Best wishes and regards!
Avatar f tn Could very well be polycystic kidney disease. Check and see if there is a long line of family history. There is a 50% chance that a sibling or offsprind will have it. Polycystic kidney invovles highblood pressure, aneurysms, and eventually kidney failure. Go see a nephrologist that specializes in the kidney.
Avatar f tn UTI can also be due to the polycystic kidney disease as well. Kidney stones and kidney failure are late-stage symptoms of the disease. I suggest you an immediate urologist’s evaluation. If the size of the stone is small, it’s usually treated with ESWL in which shock waves are given from outside and stone breaks into small pieces. On the other hand, if the stone is quite big, then the surgical removal of the stone is a better option. Also her renal functions need to be studied.
Avatar n tn t know why you have it or if you are on the right meds -- those are questions you should ask your doctor. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is usually diagnosed by the presence of multiple cysts on BOTH kidneys as well as a family history of the disease (it is genetic). As people age, they tend to get harmless cysts but even these can grow large enough to put pressure on the rib cage or a nerve and cause pain. Pain is a common symptom of PKD. I hope this helps.
Avatar f tn Strict diet and taking care of other causes like diabetes or hypertension can only prevent/delay the progression of kidney failure, it cannot normalize the kidney function. For this the underlying cause for the failure needs to be treated namely the polycystic kidneys. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn t smoke, do exercise, am thin). My doctor put me on a diuretic, Tekturna and Bystolic, and within a week I had completely lost my sense of taste! Anyone else experienced this? I'm wondering if it's a side effect that will wear off if I just stick it out. The combination seems to be working well to lower my bp and hr but I'm losing weight (a bad thing) and really, really miss food!
494961 tn?1250742077 Have you been tested for polycystic kidney disease? If not, you should ask your doctor about the possibility that the multiple kidney cysts you have are a manifestation of this condition. Around half of those with the most common variant of polycystic kidney disease experience renal failure after several years, because the progressive growth of the cysts eventually damage the normal kidney tissue (the nephrons).

494976 tn?1302710701 My Dad had Polycystic Kidney Disease. Sadly he died in an accident the year he was actually due to go on dialysis. Is it worth me being tested? I am now 32. My older sister got tested at the age of around 28. Is it true that it may not even show until you reach your 30's and therefore the test she had was a bit pointless? I get pain in my kidneys at times and fuzzyness but I drink a lot of alcohol and don't know if that may be the cause.
Avatar n tn Agree with most of what you say however, I was under the impression that PLD was fairly uncommon (I have never yet met a GP who had a similar patient) having too many liver cysts to count and three of which were over 8 ctms., aspiration (producing 1/3 litre of cystic fluid ) was a big help since the large one's were pressing on other organs.
Avatar f tn Pain and discomfort on the lower left side of abdomen can be due to several causes such as Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, infection in kidney, kidney stones, adhesions, polycystic ovary in females, IBS, and constipation. Hence IBS, Crohn’s disease and chronic constipation should be ruled out first. Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Do consult your doctor for a referral to a gastroenterologist.
1743553 tn?1311212725 -) i was rushed into hospital in december and was diagnosed with msk medullary sponge kidney, they was goig to remove my kidney due to the disease arrupting my other kidney but they said it was to dangerous ... they then made me an oppiontment to see a major kidney speasialist they said i need to see one asap and the waiting list is a year but they have put me in for feb... they are putting me on a diabetes ward and i dont understand why?
Avatar f tn Your test results indicate that you have polycystic kidney disease and that the cyst is too large. The stones are not big, but because your kidneys have cysts, your stones, you should pay attention to them, avoid strenuous activities, and walk less in people.
Avatar m tn My blood pressure has been running about 117-127 / 73-84 over the last few days. It that a good range for kidney disease.
Avatar n tn Her doctor told her it was congenital but did not mention polycystic kidney disease. Again any hopeful info is welcome. Thanks.
Avatar n tn Unfortunately Austin lived for a very short time. I was told at my 20 week u/s that Austin had polycystic kidney disease affecting both kidneys. I was told he would probably not survive after birth. I carried full term and had no problems. Two weeks before I have birth my amniotic fluid index (AFI) was only 2. Austin basically had no lung tissue because there was hardly no fluid for his lungs to develop. He never cried. I was told I would probably never have to face this again. WRONG!
Avatar f tn Pain in the lower back and flank pain as well as headaches are symptoms of polycystic kidney disease (see private message). Have you been regularly getting your red blood cell count monitored (with kidney disease, there can be an issue with erythropoietin, a hormone instrumental in red blood cell production) ? What about protein in your urine- how much of that do you have in a 24 hour period? What is your glomerular filtration rate (GFR)?
Avatar n tn My wife (41 years old, polycystic kidney disease but renal function still very good) had an abdominal CT scan today to rule out aortic rupture. test was negative and ER personnel sent us home with no answers. She is experiencing pulsation on middle to left side, pain, nausea, tingling in feet. you can see her stomach pulsate up and down and can feel it beat rapidly, like a second heart. If it's not arterial, then what is it? a hernia?
1671104 tn?1303848269 Most often it is related to urinary tract problems like kidney stones, inflammation of urinary tract, renal vein thrombosis, certain kidney tumors and polycystic kidney disease, blood coagulation disorders and anticoagulants. Diagnostic tests that may be performed include Urinalysis, Urine culture, X-rays of the kidneys, Cystoscopy, IVP, Abdominal ultrasound and CT scan of the abdomen. The treatment will depend on the cause of the blood in the urine.
Avatar n tn Causes can be divided according to the affected organ and they are Kidney conditions (infection, pyelonephritis, kidney stones, polycystic kidney disease), Bladder conditions (cystitis, bladder polyp, bladder tumor), Urethral conditions (Sexually transmitted diseases, urethral injury) and certain bleeding disorders and hence a detailed examination and investigations are needed to cofnrim the diagnosis. I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
