Does Synthroid affect the processing of alcohol? Since going on it (50mcg), I have noticed I experience a sort of hangover even with low alcohol intake (i.e. less than 2 beers). It is not, however, like a normal hangover, but almost like I have ingested too much salt. I will have a headache, but it is not the classic spinning, throbbing, nauseous feeling. Any ideas?
decided to research long term affects of Synthroid(T4) and found that it does increase BP and cholesterol if that is ALL that you are on - synthroid contains sodium which increases BP.
docs are not treating us with T4 PLUS T3 (Liothyronine), which is essential to your health and metabolism according to the National Library of Medicine which states "without this hormone, the body cannot function properly".
I have been on a gradually increasing dosage of synthroid for the past 6 years, until last Nov (07) when I started having hyperthyroid type symptoms, at which time I began to lose weight. I went from 164lbs down to my current 147lbs. I have been to many specialists and have had many test run, all of which are normal.....excpet for a couple of things.
I have been trying to find a story similar to mine but everyone either takes just Armour or Cytomel with a combination of Synthroid or another med.. I am just wondering if Cytomel will be enough for me.. Even though my blood work is well within the normal range. It is difficult to see a holistic doctor since I am a military dependent.
Why do you take Synthroid? Hashimoto's? You should know if this is the cause because Hashi is NOT just a thyroid issue but an auto-immune issue.

Front hip pain/upper thigh (groin crease). It is felt with movement. Not severe. It seems to hurt only the day after I drink alcohol (I mostly drink red wine- most evenings) Sometimes it will start in middle of night (I can feel a little soreness when I roll over), sometimes it waits until sometime the next day before hurting (lasts entire day). It is minimal, but there and If I don’t drink at all= no pain. Sometimes it’s worse than others. I can sometimes target the pain.
Female (44) On 1996 Dx: Hypothyroidism . Tx: Synthroid-started 100mcg-actual 125 mcg. Last symptoms constant cold, depression, fatigue, sleepy, hair falling, cracked nails, constipation, total lack of energy. Labs (2/10): TSH 0.03 (0.45-4.67); T4 1.59 (0.71-1.85); T3 2.9 (2.4-4.2); Reverse T3 372 no normal values posted. The symptoms were kind of controlled a couple years ago, however, the fatigue was always present, hair falling, craked nails, constipation, and desire to sleep all the time.
I've been on methimazole since I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at 16 (I'm 22 now); I was on 20mg of methimazole per day for the longest time, but just recently switched to 10mg per day because my blood work came back slightly hypo.
I'm of course nervous about the potential weight gain (I've always been physically fit and want to remain so because I have a heart issue) and other adverse side effects. For those of you that have gone through this procedure before, what was it like for you?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 1977. I first took Euthroid, then Synthroid, and later Levo-Thyroxine. I have never had a problem with any medication. My therapy has always been successful. I am healthy in every other way, and take no other medication, vitamin, or supplement.
After having been on Levo-Thyroxine for a few years, my endocrinologist put me back on Synthroid. I took Synthroid for many years; therefore, I did pay any attention to the change.
My endocrinologist won't--says I should get another doctor if I can't live with the reaction I'm getting to 100 mg. Synthroid (brand) + 12 1/2 mg Cytomel.
I had my total thyroidectomy in 2006. It took a long time to get levels of synthetic thyroid hormone right--I could accept that, and the mood alterations that went with the experiments.

I am just wondering it it's acceptable and effective to take one's Synthroid dose at *bedtime* with a full glass of water--as long as one has not eaten anything for at least *3 hours* prior to going to bed?
There's several reasons why taking the Synthroid dose first thing in the morning is causing inconvenience.

I have found that I was not able to drink certain alcohol with the synthroid medications, I myself had a few incidents where I couldnt remember after about 3 glasses of wine or martinis, and I too would feel really sick the following day -not hung over. I have done some Experimenting with different alcohols to see what my body and mind can handle with this disease. I have found a couple of dark beers suit me fine, but champagne seems to be the drink of choice with no crazy side effects.
Two years ago, I was working with a nutritionist and following an excellent weight loss program. I had successfully lost almost 50 lbs before being diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I underwent treatment and started taking synthroid. I am very discouraged and concerned as I am gaining weight every week. I have gained 30 pounds since November.
- Many people get migraines when they drink alcohol. It is also possible for alcohol to trigger nose bleeds.
- Vitamin deficiencies can sometimes be the cause of nose bleeds. Especially if you are deficient in vitamin C or K. Any stress on the body can increase the frequency of your migraines, and a vitamin deficiency is a stress on the body. You could ask your doctor to check your vitamin C and K levels.
I've done some internet sleuthing and found that synthroid and hypothyroidism can cause them to be elevated, but I'd just like to hear some firsthand experiences. I'm on 75mcg daily.
Is it all that unnatural for someone with *naturally occuring* (not induced by thyroid medication or treament) hyperthyroidism to have a significant difficulty losing weight? From the symptoms I've read about, hyperthyroidism sounds like it keep a person skinny but I'm starting to think otherwise.
I have had hyperthyroidism since the on-set of puberty (about 14 years for me) - I distinctly remember that right around that time, I gained a lot of weight and have continued to do so.
my 20 year old son was recently hospitalized with hypothyroidism. His TSH level was 379 and he experienced a kind of psychotic episode. He is home now. he's experiencing a lot of anxiety. Takes a xanax once a day. he can't seem to fall asleep before 4 a.m. Its been about 2 weeks since his episode. i'm wondering if anyone can relate to any of this and when we can expect him to feel better.
Any way I have come accross this website on foods to eat and avoid with Thyroid problems. Dairy, Alcohol, Wheet, Caffine and Sugar is a major part to stay away from (sad hey?) also fluoride and chlorine found in water and tooth paste. Great salt to get onto is himalayan salt, it is full of nutrients which are great for our Thyroid. Hope this helps. All the best. It is a horrible disease. No beer or wine, but an occasional mixed drink, either with gin or rum. I have never had any problems with it in the past, I am very careful about drinking because I saw alcoholism ruin my uncle's life. However, over the Christmas/New Years holiday I drank on two occasions....one a small glass of rum and coke and the other occasion a small glass of eggnog with a little rum mixed in. On both occasions I became very much in pain....like a severe heartburn kind of pain....
