Synthroid and depression

Common Questions and Answers about Synthroid and depression

synthroid

Avatar f tn In studies Synthroid treats bipolar depression and is used for that purpose. Lexapro is of course a standard anti-depressent. But something is either worsening the depression or not working. Speak to your psychiatrist about it. Ask them what's going on and they can determine whether its something physical, a medication side effect or the medications not working. But do speak to them about it and perhaps they should consult with the doctor who is prescribing the synthroid as well.
Avatar f tn Hello- I'm 33/female and I've had hypothyroidism since age 26. I'm taking Synthroid and Cytomel and my endo checks my levels every 6 months. I'm usually midly elevated and my dr tried a couple times to lower my dosage but it always resulted in me feeling awful and him reverting to my original dose. The reason why I'm writing here is because I've been feeling extremely depressed lately.
Avatar n tn At the time, my tsh level was 16.3. I was put on 25 mcg of synthroid and initially felt some relief of my symptoms. If I take an honest look back over the months though, I haven't felt 'normal' and like myself in quite some time. FInally in early July, I couldn't take the symptoms anymore...depression, lots of anxiety, indigestion/bloating, fatigue, strange sensations in my hands and feet, so I went to the family dr. and asked her to check my levels.
996946 tn?1503249112 I take quite a few meds and I had asked my Dr. 6 mo. ago if I could discontinue the .025 mg synthroid and she said I could try that and see how I felt. I'm thinking now these 2 incidents of fast heart rate might be connected with stopping the med. but it's such a small dosage it may not make a difference. Other than depression, I don't have any symptoms of hyper. Thanks also, dgmootry for your comment...I never realized it took that long for the medicine to take effect.
Avatar m tn fatigue [no other lab testing done] Around 1 month ago, I started Prozac to deal with the depression and worrying that resulted from this illness. Prozac is pretty effective, but it makes me very sleepy. My testosterone was low before this happened though. Do you guys have any explanation for the weight loss and reduction in testosterone levels? The loss in testosterone and weight is very large given the time span. What are some suggestions? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
Avatar f tn I've been dealing with depression and bi-polar for 8 years. I've actually quit taking all mood stabilizers and have been quite happy and stable on just my anit-depressant, Wellbutrin. Recently diagnosed with hypothyroid and started taking synthroid. I just feel like I'm walking around in a huge fog. I'm tired all the time and cannot concentrate. I don't really feel depressed, but I feel like isolating and don't want to do anything.
Avatar f tn Had been feeling terrible when I was switched by my mail order to Synthroid instead of Levothyroxine. Dr. also said I was hypo. Recent test results TSH - 7.93 - Thyroxine Free 0.80. Can some people tolerate Levo better than Synthroid. Don't know if my symptoms of nausea, bloating, depression, hot spells are due to Synthroid or hypo. Thank you so much.
Avatar n tn I never had a problem with cytomel, it did help me with my depression. I am on the max of synthroid and for the past 13 mo, I have endured 19 surgeries and 5 life threatening infections. My thyroid levels are so bad and I have had so many horrible symptoms. I will tell you that I purchased 2 books that were so helpful, the Thyroid Solution and Thyroid and Depression, both books are fantastic. I also got Thyroid for Dummies, another good resource book.
Avatar m tn I am on Armour and I am one of the ones who didn't benefit from Synthroid - you are very lucky your found Synthroid to work best for you - it is the thyroid drug of choice and many doctors will not continue Armour if you need to change to someone else. Go back to what works - and the question is still ot there - Why did you try it if Synthroid was working?
Avatar n tn Hi. My thyroid was totally removed 2 years ago. I am on synthroid 175 mg . I am now going through menopause and having a hard time. Is there anything I can do or take? I gain a lot weight before surgery do to the thyroid. The drs keep telling me to lose the weight and I will be fine. But I have been trying to lose the weight and nothing seems to work. It is so frustrating. I have weighed the same for the last 2 1/2 years.
492307 tn?1214186739 I had been on Zoloft for 4 yrs. I had read "somewhere" on the internet that Zoloft can affect your thyroid. I did wean VERY slowly. Also I cannot for the life of me (brain fog??) remember my TSH, but my free T4 was .6 and my Dr. said she wanted it at 1.3. To adreilove I have been taking synthroid in the morning, and each day I feel worse. I keep telling myself it's all in my head and I'll feel GREAT the next day, but I just keep getting worse.
990510 tn?1249238897 I have hypothyroidism with some increase in throglobulin antibodies. (what ever it is) I was on generic synthroid for 6 months and have been on sythroid for 1 year. I also take zoloft. I am wondering if the zoloft is making my thyroid worse. If so I would like to change it. I have always noticed that is does not do much for my anxiety and I am on a high dose 150 mg. my dose is now at 112 mcg for synthroid and symptoms seem to be worsening. I am frustrated.
Avatar n tn Hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid is not emitting the amount of hormone your body actually needs, can cause depression, aching joints, muscle weakness, constipation (which can lead to more gas I think), and hair loss. See PM. Please consult your physician about these symptoms and ask if they will check your thyroid function, including free T3 and free T4 levels, not just TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone that comes from the pituitary).
Avatar m tn The Major Anxiety Disorder, panic attacks, depression, and agoraphobia is the result of an underlying medical problem, and I truly believe it was the result of an incompetent doctor that saw me only once, however, my family physician felt I still needed to take the Synthroid. I've bounced around from .25 - 1.25 mg. My hope and prayer is that this doctor can help me. So the question again - was I placed on thyroid medication when I didn't need it?
Avatar f tn 96 (high) and I was placed on .50 mcg of synthroid. My latest test showed my TSH was still high at 4.81 and my synthroid was increased to .75mcg. Stg088 was correct in pointing out that hair loss is a sign of hypothyroidism. Some other signs are dry skin, fatigue, extra sensitive to cold, depression constipation. Luckily, I'm asymptomatic. Wish I could be more sensitive to cold, I'm always flushed and burning up. Good luck with this issue. Congratulations on being undected!
Avatar f tn I used to be on .2mg Synthroid and Cytomel, forget the dose until I could not get it any longer. It is again available I see. I had shown my previous doctor, moved, a study showing its benefits with synthroid. can you comment on it and also tell me what that study was. thanks This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/264286'>Adding Cytomel</a>.
Avatar f tn Recently began having recurrance of severe insomnia and anxiety/depression despite medication for both and synthroid as well. PCP ordered hormone levels FSH was normal. T3 total 115, T3 uptake ws high (41) T4 total was normal (9.5) but free T4 index was high 3.9. Dr. said tests were normal. Is this true? If not what does it mean? I had severe stress from job and quit it just last week but still miserable with sleep disturbance and night sweats, rapid heart beat etc.
Avatar n tn I hope someone can help me. I am hypothyroid and have been taking 100 mcg of Synthroid. I was tested as being Vitamin D deficient. My level was only 9 (32-100). I was started on Vitamin D and 6 weeks later, my level is now 55. I was feeling hypo again, so I had my TSH tested and it had gone up to 4.97 since taking the vitamin D. I have two questions: 1. Do I now stop taking the vitamin D now that my levels are normal and 2. Do I definitely need an increase in Synthroid now.
Avatar m tn On THYROID it went as high as 200 sys and on Synthroid 195. I am working now with my doc to reduce and take me off all thyroid meds and I plan to migrate to kelp (iodine extract) and if necessary L-tyrosine to boost my T3 production. I also have a bright red facial rash which migrated to my neck. Blurring of vision and headaches are also side affects. In 2002 the AMA lowered the entry level to hypothyroidism scooping up 50 million formerly borderline thyroid problems.
Avatar f tn The TSH is low - suggesting you may need less synthroid - depends on cancer risk and TSH goal. Low TSH may be reflecting that synthroid excess causing weight loss.
Avatar m tn My brother recently had a TT and has been on synthroid for 10 months. . He gets very, very anxious especially in the morning and it usually subsides a little in the evening. He is now recently become quite depressed also. His dose of synthroid was recently dropped from 150 to 125 as his TSH was.02 and his T4 Free was at 35. Would this medication be a big or partial contributor to how he has been feeling?
Avatar f tn I have slowly tapered off of Zoloft, and have been depression med free and depression free for a few weeks now.
200220 tn?1361951554 It was my psychiatrist that told me to do this. He also put me on the gingko, and fish oil. I am trying the split synthroid. I take it 7 and 2. I don't know why he did that . He is the one who put me on the synthroid in the first place. I was on the generic and he changed it and it was like night and day for me. I do trust him as he has helped me more than my endo. He seems to know alot about thryoid and mental stuff.
377600 tn?1225163436 I read that too. On the endocrine web. Except I take Zoloft. It says that that if you take Zoloft you may need more of the Synthroid. Strange. You try to fix one thing and something else happens. I've decided to try and fix the thyroid first then deal with the depression. LOL It might not work that way though. Maybe the Lexapro is the cause of your chest discomfort?
Avatar f tn It helped but I tried to get off and felt like a steamroller ran over me until I told doctor after a mo and he put me back on it and the aches stopped. I also am on Synthroid for hypothyroidism. This started in 2000 with the depression or vice-versa...both at same time. I tried several meds until Zoloft was the answer. I was my old self in no time and weight stayed normal just as it had my entire life into my 50s. Never had weight prob at all in my life until the thyroid and depression hit.
2041909 tn?1329936033 I have suffered all of these things in which you have related on your post. All of my life I have had severe Anxiety, and depression. I have very low self esteem, and am very insecure. Dont know Why?? So this has been going on for years and years. I have trouble sleeping, the whole nine yards.I am 50 years old. 10 years ago, I see an endocrinologist and he sees I have Hypothroidism and it takes 1 year to get me regulated, and I took Synthroid first, then Armour.
562054 tn?1216155937 Hello, I had a total thyroidectomy in January. I am gaining weight, have mood issues, depression, anxiety, exhaustion, hair loss, joint pains, just to name a few. I'm seeing my Dr this week, and I'll find out my results from bloos tests. Just what should the TSH levels be? I really think my synthroid should be increased & I want to go in there with some good information. My BIGGEST concern is the weight gain!!
9595194 tn?1404749116 One area I'm concerned about is which radioactive iodine they'll use for the ultrasound...I-123 or I-131. If the latter, I'm not going to have it done as that will destroy the thyroid and I'm not ready for that. I wouldn't know if I'm having any repercussions with the Methimazole or not as I'm on three blood thinners(aspirin, Plavix and Warfarin) and get cold easier than when I was younger and before starting them some 8-10 years ago.
