Suboxone for pain control

Common Questions and Answers about Suboxone for pain control

suboxone

Avatar f tn I have recently detoxed from Percocet and codeine and feel like I have no options for pain control now. I have rheumatoid arthritis and as a result of this have a torn Tfcc ligament that now requires surgery. My doctors do not want to treat me for pain because of my addiction so I'm looking up solutions myself. My question is can someone with opiate dependence take the fentanyl patch? Has anyone been in this situation!
759515 tn?1240482732 I would suggest asking your doctor what he/she thinks and if it is an option for you. Some doctors will not prescibe it for pain control at all. I know some members here have tried methodone too. Have you discussed any of this with your doctor , or or you just researching the idea at this point?
1774104 tn?1314215207 re taking them for pain control. I guess the same would hold true for Suboxone/Subutex. Though I have heard of people who do take narcotics (for purposes of getting high) while on methadone.) It must have been a very frightening time for you going through all you did. I'm glad you recovered as well as have!! Though it sounds as though your pain is pretty bad. I know nerve pain can be very difficult to treat.
Avatar f tn My question is will the suboxone after day six post surgery give me enough pain control instead of the opioids. I plan on returning to suboxone although part of me wishes i could stay off of it and have not pain. I hope someone can answer my question. thank you.
Avatar f tn Now why would you feel guilt for that? My doc has me on methadone for pain, I also wanted to be on it in hopes I could control my drug cravings, my Dr. doesn't know about any addiction problems. Sometimes I wonder if suboxone wouldn't be better for me, would need a different doctor though.
Avatar m tn The confusion here may be that Suboxone and Subutex are generally prescribed to treat addiction and not normally considered for pain management. Suboxone and Subutex are two drugs that have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of opiate addiction. Both medications contain the main active ingredient Buprenorphine which stops the craving and withdrawal symptoms as well as it is a partial agonist. However Subutex does not contain an additional ingredient which is called Naloxone.
Avatar f tn m brand new to this website and forum, but have been researching extensively online with regards to pain management and, in particular, Suboxone treatment for chronic pain. I have been suffering from chronic pain (daily) for over 4 years now, and have been taking opiates as prescribed. However, over the past two years, due to a few stress fractures and aggravated arthritis, I my pain has become so bad that I cannot seem to find relief and I refuse to continue upping my dose of Oxycontin.
Avatar f tn his history: he was an alcoholic for 8 yrs., was prescribed vic's for pain, quit drinking, started going through a script of 230 vic's in less than 2 weeks, was hospitalized w/ severe hypertension, the dr. thought his BP problems were due to being in pain, put him on a fentanyl patch and oxy IR's, that went to regular oxy's, withdrew cold turkey from those back in nov., the dr. put him right back on lortabs and until he went to treatment he was taking more than 20 of those a day.
Avatar f tn You do not need a special "license" to treat patients with suboxone for chronic pain. You do need a special "license" to treat patients with suboxone for opiate dependence. In order to treat addiction patients with suboxone, a doctor needs to complete an 8 hour class in addiction treatment and then they are granted a federal waiver in order or prescribe it for addiction treatment. A quick google search will tell you, or your doctor about this.
Avatar n tn if you are not abusing you pain meds then i don't think suboxone is the right choice at all for you. it is mainly used for relapse prevention. it's does little for pain. i have a friend who is on pain med yet does not abuse. when he becomes tolerant, he has his doctor switch him to a different medicine rather than up his dose. he absolutely refuses to be put on oxycontin. it is my understanding that withdrawing from suboxone is very very hard and long lasting.
Avatar n tn Has anyone else here gone on the suboxone for chronic pain relief. This is what my doc is using it for on me-I see most of you are on it for detox....I was wanting of fthe dilaudud as I was afraid of becoming addicted.(And was constipated all the time so he put me on naltrexone for the chronic constipation I was on.Ended up in hospital 4-6x for this.,the naltrexone worked great to help me go also using the miralax as added supplement.
Avatar m tn Ive heard of some people who use injections of buprenex which Id imagine is for quite severe pain, but suboxone isnt really designed for pain management more for getting off of opiates. Wish you all the best, look into as many different methods as possible, there are others out there that can replace opiates.
1429136 tn?1287209602 I don't know much about suboxone but I think you should call the doctor who prescribed it and I'm sure he'll be able to tell you what's best to take for pain control. I would imagine a high dose of ibuprofen would help a lot (800 mg.) alternating with Tylenol. But check with your doctor about the dosages. I've had extractions and serious root canals in the past and never needed narcotics. I always just did lots of ice packs and the ibuprofen/tylenol combination.
722310 tn?1234762137 If you feel like your becoming or are addicted to the meds that keep your pain under control then maybe methodone or suboxone will work for you. Please don't give up hope, I do totally understand you do not want your son to have a problem with theses medications and as a parent I understand more than you know, we all want our children to have no pain and when they do we worry. talk to your son and see if he would be willing to talk to the doctor about these medications that can help you.
Avatar m tn Some it helps with pain and some not. In Europe, low doses of suboxone are being given for chronic pain but in the US its only for addiction. Anyway, I really wish you the best with your journey to finding pain relief. I think people do not understand how pain can really a persons mentally and physically. It really ***** (please excuse my french) but do not give up.
Avatar m tn anyone have any comments about getting on suboxone for pain.....wife was on methadone stopped and does not want to start taking pills again....was addicted to pain pills is how she got on methadone...wondering if we are making the right choice....
Avatar f tn Suboxone contains the active medication buprenorphine. There is a great deal of emotion around this and other sites over Suboxone; I encourage you to listen primarily to medical professionals, as some of the other opinions have taken on zealotry that is more likely to cloud judgment than buprenorphine! Realize first that Suboxone contains nothing new; the two medications have been used by doctors for over 30 years.
317787 tn?1473358451 I have my doubts about this but am hoping someone on here might have experience with this medication. Is suboxone used for pain management?
Avatar f tn Thanks for all the info and input in regards to my post. However since my post I've learned that the sub treatment she is receiving is for addiction only. The pain I was informed of was just to keep from having to say that there was a relapse. She is my ex's girlfriend. I knew last summer she went into detox for a bad oxy addiction, however they had split up before she was released.(due to other issues).
Avatar f tn com website that this drug is **COUNTERINDICATED** for pain control. It is not nor is it intended to be a pain control medication. Don't waste your money. Check the website for good information.
230262 tn?1316645934 You are right in the sense that Suboxone is NOT indicated for pain control, it was manufactured and licensed strictly for the treatment of opiate dependancy. The same goes for subutex, although without the risk of abuse there is no need for the naloxone, hence subutex being prescribed off label in the US for pain control. Buprenorphine, the active ingrediant is however, indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe pain.
Avatar f tn wow I will tell you this suboxone is NOT AT ALL FOR PAIN. I know I tried suboxone and I have true pain and it did nothing for my pain and I also know others that have tried also and same nothing for pain. He should have told you why switch if you ask me something is up and he thinks you have some kind of problem he the only doctor you go to....Something is not being told make no sense at all.
