Avatar f tn s syndrome, HIV infection, syphilis, and vitamin B12 deficiency as these too can precipitate transverse myelitis like symptoms. Spinal fluid is checked for inflammation, immunoglobulin level and for protein to know whether there is an inflammatory or autoimmune process associated. Sudden loss of sensation or sensory loss is seen in Gullian Barre Syndrome and in toxic neuropathy, leprosy, Lyme’s disease, diabetes, SLE, amyloidosis, and uremic neuropathy.
Avatar f tn Transverse myelitis, anyone had it? And what were your symptoms and how long did they last? I was hospitalized on 1/9 for three days IV steroids then oral steroids the next 15 days. I still have the same partial numbness from the neck down with worse numbness & pins and needles in both hands. This is driving me crazy and I just wanted to know if it's like this for anyone else. PS started neurotin a week ago, not helping yet.
Avatar f tn I was involved in a car accident and very soon thereafter developed symtoms very similiar to MS. I have not been diagnosed with MS but have transverse myelitis. Did anyone else out there have a diagnosis of transverse myelitis?
Avatar f tn I had an initial attack of transverse myelitis which came on slowly over a few weeks in October 2011 (lesion c4-c7 no enhancing). LP normal. NMO-iGg normal x2. All other labs normal. It left me with severe difficulty walking as well as muscle fatigue in my arms and hands and both legs but primarily my right. Steroid treatment yielded only minor improvement overall with 1,000 mg solumedrol for 5 days. I was unable to do more than walk around my home and required a wheelchair for any distance.
Avatar n tn Is it possible to have transverse myelitis without leg weakness and bowel/bladder problems? I have abnormal sensations from my toes to my ribcage just below my breasts. Briefly, the sensations are the feeling that I have sand or grit in my shoes all of the time, band-like sensations around my knees and my ribcage, and my skin feels different to the touch--numb, for lack of a better word, though I can feel pain. I have had one MRI which was inconclusive for an intrinsic thoracic cord lesion.
Avatar n tn Hi there. Several therapies for acute transverse myelitis are intravenous steroids, plasma exchange therapy, pain medications like acetaminophen, naproxen, antidepressants like sertaline etc. Other non drug therapies include physical and occupational therapy, psychotherapy etc. the prognosis may include partial recovery over time and depends on the cause of transverse myelitis ranging from mild to severe disability. I am not very sure about the beneficial effects of hypothermal therapy.
Avatar m tn Cured?????? I have dealt with Transverse Myelitis (as a care taker), and I can tell you no cure has been found yet.
Avatar f tn As of now, there is no permanent cure exists for transverse myelitis patients. Usually, treatment is designed to manage uncontrollable neurological symptoms and new researches are still in process of finding sure success treatment. Therefore, I cannot assure you about any permanent cure here. Initially, doctors may suggest you to move your affected limb manually in order to improve muscle strength, coordination, and range of motion.
Avatar n tn I have recently been diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis Post Viral. I have (in the recent past) had several vascular test done also. The MRI came back negative but I have had this problem for several months now. It did somewhat go away for a couple of months but came back real hard the past 4 months. I have a very deep ache along with sometimes sharp pains only in my legs from the waist down.
Avatar f tn I have had an episode of Transverse Myelitis. Again MRI imaging and LP was normal on a T3 machine of my cervical, brain and thoracic. He too repeated MRI 8mths later and has now booked me in again for MRI in 2010. He has not ruled out recurrent TM or it changing to MS. I also get migraine aura without the headache, my eyes shimmer and I get vertigo and it always worsens my symptoms, I can't help but wonder if all my symptoms are not due to migraine.
Avatar n tn 4 so that was a scary time for me. The problem they had with me is i am past the age for onset of ms. so that was a weird one. all of my children are grown and my grand children are catching up with their parents.
Avatar n tn It is hard to say if this is your cause since I do not know more about your transverse myelitis. Also, the etiology of the transverse myelitis may be a source and/or contributor of your occipital pain. Lastly, how mobile are you? If you have significant immobility or postural changes, an occipital headache may be secondary to this (as discussed above). I would suggest that you follow up with your neurologist. You may need to have further neuro-imaging of your head and neck.
Avatar m tn Hello, thanks for taking time to read this. I am a 40 y/o man who has been, for the most part, healthly my whole life. That is until this May (2011). I was very busy at the time (coaching my son's tee ball team, work, dealing with a vacant rental house, etc.) I started having calf pains and twitches at first and then it spread to my entire body. A twitch here and a twitch there. I went to my PCP and he did the normal blood work, even testing for tick bites.
Avatar f tn I have had very defined symptom of Transverse Myelitis, however my doctor has not directly indicated this is my problem. Since late Nov, I had noticed heaviness, numbness, tingling in lower extremities. I have had ct, mri (brain, lower back, spinal tap, sleep deprived eeg. He put me on Neuroton, and Requip which has done nothing to ease the symptoms, which are progressing. At times I have lost the use of both legs.
Avatar f tn "The Relationship between Transverse Myelitis and Multiple Sclerosis Transverse myelitis (TM) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are both inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system where the immune system becomes abnormal and attacks the nervous system. TM is largely a “one-time” disease (monophasic) that involves only the spinal cord. MS is always a “many-time” disease (multiphasic) that involves the brain, optic nerves and spinal cord.
Avatar f tn Inflammation of the spinal cord can occur following trauma or can be transverse myelitis. Transverse myelitis is a neurological syndrome caused by inflammation of the spinal cord. The common presenting symptoms are limb weakness, sensory disturbances, back pain and bladder and bowel disturbances. It can be caused by infections, autoimmune disease or vaccinations. The treatment is mainly steroids. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transverse_myelitis Hope this helps!
494976 tn?1302710701 Does anyone know how neurologists tell the difference between Transverse Myelitis and CIS? I have been diagnosed with CIS with lesions on my spine and brain, sudden paraethesia 2 years ago in my spine, but what makes it CIS, meaning probable MS, and not Transverse Myelitis? Is it anything to do with the location of lesions? Any Info would be appreciated. Aimee.
Avatar n tn It is possible that you are describing the symptoms of partial transverse myelitis (transverse means across and myelitis is from the word "myelos," which is Greek for marrow -- they used to think the spihnal cord was the marrow of the bony spinal column: it is a good thing they did not attempt bone marrow biopsies! "itis" means inflammation). This can be seen by itself, with MS, with something called Neuromyelitis Optica (Devic's disease) or many other diagnoses.
1359227 tn?1282522148 Look up Transverse Myelitis. How are you doing, any joy with a diagnosis, have you seen a neurologist yet?
