Avatar f tn It is also a signal that if you do not stop smoking, your lung function will increasingly continue to rapidly deteriorate. That means that smoking cessation is not just the abandonment of a bad habit but a crucial act that will prevent further loss of lung function, reduce the frequency of lung infections, reduce the likelihood of lung (and other) cancers, enhance the quality of your life and extend the length of your life.
429700 tn?1308007823 Yesterday I went to my first smoking cessation class. She wanted us to continue smoking this week so we could identify our triggers. I have already done that and I had already psyched myself up for quitting so I bought my own patches this week. Today is day one.

Avatar n tn You have made a terrific decision to stop smoking and you should never again smoke cigarettes or joints. You should also avoid occupations that would put you in contact with harmful substances that could further damage your lungs. Being a carrier of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency with a MZ phenotype, you are not entirely risk free. The MZ carrier state increases the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but only with exposure to cigarette smoke and environmental pollutants.
286124 tn?1214938528 I also smoke and have gotten a perscription for Chantix. It is supposed to help me stop smoking. It releases dopamine slowly in your body to help you fight your cravings. My question is this: can Chantix also help with coming off of these pills? any advice will be very appreciated. I will post again to tell my story. I'm at work and wanted to ask real quick! thanks again!
Avatar n tn Both smoking cessation and the antitrypsin replacement therapy will significantly increase your life expectancy, no matter how severe the COPD is at this time. Good luck.
Avatar n tn i have never considered myself a full-fledged smoker as I only smoke socially and never regularly, so I have never consistently disclosed my cigarette smoking history to my treating physicians. I have recently (within the past couple of weeks) decided to quit for good after getting a good scare about the reality that I've been smoking for about fifteen years. I went to my pcp today due to a second bought with shortness of breath in a month.
1671473 tn?1450592437 Within two years after smoking cessation, the percentage of hypothyroid cases attributable to cessation of smoking was 85%. Current smoking was not associated with altered risk for developing overt hypothyroidism (OR: 0.92 (0.57-1.48)). CONCLUSIONS: The risk of having overt autoimmune hypothyroidism diagnosed is more than 6 fold increased the first 2 years after cessation of smoking. Clearly smoking cessation is vital to prevent death and severe disease.

Avatar m tn That is, worsening of cough following cigarette smoking cessation. This is apparently due to the fact that smoking conventional cigarettes diminishes the sensitivity of cough receptors in the throat and, with cessation, the sensitivity of these receptors is enhanced and cough occurs with less stimulation than was required to initiate cough, while smoking.
Avatar m tn If he does want to quit but has a hard time doing so tell him to ask his doctor if they having smoking cessation which is to help people to quit smoking. He can also go cold turkey but if he does make sure he is doing some active and be there for him because having a good friend around to make sure you don't slide back and light up is really helpful.

1262435 tn?1270311859 This diminution in risk occurs relatively soon after cessation of smoking, and increasing intervals since the last cigarette smoked are associated with progressively lower mortality rates from CHD. Similar rapid decreases in risk with smoking cessation are also seen for ischemic stroke. Benefits from quitting are seen in former smokers even after many years of heavy smoking.
Avatar f tn s not, ask them to recommend how to cut back and quit, or ask them to recommend a smoking cessation method to help you (the patch, the gum, etc)...and see if there are any smoking cessation programs in your state that you can call for information as well.

Avatar n tn However, the stress levels of adult smokers are slightly higher than those of nonsmokers, adolescent smokers report increasing levels of stress as they develop regular patterns of smoking, and smoking cessation leads to reduced stress. Far from acting as an aid for mood control, nicotine dependency seems to exacerbate stress". The above statement is absolutely true! It is the smoker who labels their addiction to cigarettes as a "stress reliever.
1571737 tn?1295772392 My doc told me that Im young to have this. I been smoking for almost 29 years and mary jane is just as bad. 2 very bad combos. So yeah, I would say your putting yourself in your grave. I found out that due to my abnormal blood test, that it can mean having problems with my liver. Guess what? Your liver puts out a protein that protects your lungs. Hmmmm..........
Avatar f tn Have you ever seen one of those clinics that uses hypnosis for smoking cessation? I hear they work really well. You sound like you're doing so well already that maybe something like that would put you over the top and you would not only stop but never start again.
Avatar m tn My father was a heavy smoker, but none of my brothers or sisters, or I, smoked when we were young. This did not seem odd to me. It was just the way it was. Adults smoked. Children didn't. I wonder why your girlfriend didn't take that tack. I remember once, when I was chaperoning a school dance, that someone took issue with me for smoking. She said the children weren't allowed to, so I shouldn't. I said I wasn't a child.
Avatar f tn I can go hours without smoking because I don't smoke in the house.... and I don't smoke at work because I work from home LOL..............I smoke as a reward system. When a project is completed...........Now don't think for a minute I don't smoke a lot. I have plenty of reasons to reward myself. I use to smoke a pack a day. Mostly in the mornings and in the evenings,mid-day with Cafa Vienna or Tea. Before and after dinner, a drive in the car.......
Avatar m tn You don't have to monitor your levels every week during the smoking cessation process... I'm sure there's going to be some discomfort, but we've all (those who have quit smoking) gone through discomfort with both the smoking cessation AND being hypo until we got to the correct level of medication.
Avatar m tn wellbutrin is not indicated in the cessation of smoking marijuana, but it does increase your chances of seizure if you drink alcohol while taking it. also, smoking, i think it actually either helps with the cessation of anxiety in anxious peoples or adds anxiety on non anxious people so if you are smoking to chill out (just a guess), you might want to try anti-anxiety meds instead.
Avatar m tn I would suggest not smoking cannibus (weed). If it isn't helping you, why smoke it? Please don't get me wrong, I am a firm believer in the medicinal value of weed, but if you aren't able to tolerate the effects, then stay away from it, please. You also may have smoked weed that was sprayed with a pesticide. You are so young...unless you have chronic pain or cancer, don't smoke weed. Its obviously not helping you. And...yes...I am a mother of 2 young adults in their 20's.
Avatar m tn I have recently been approved by VA for a chantix prescription, and expect to start the cessation program within days. I've been told that a recent medical study indicates that a male of my age, 66, incurs decreased longevity by quitting smoking after 50 years addiction. can someone direct me to such a study, or advise if I've been misled?
Avatar n tn m 48 yrs old, did not smoke until 47, largest amount of smoking on one day was a bit less than half a pack; that was weeks ago
2088555 tn?1332655139 Continue with your antibiotics and bronchodilators. Immediately on cessation of smoking you will not see any improvement. The damage which has already been done will be there, only it will prevent further damage. So, continue with your medications, smoking cessation and breathing exercises and inhalations. If there is worsening of symptoms consult your doctor for alternate medications. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn tina i think you already know the answer to that, you are already getting symptoms of your body being poisoned with tobaco again, your body had started to change for the better from not smoking, so you will just undo the progress you made from cessation of smoking, so if i was you unless you want to kill yourself, is dump the ciggarettes NOW THEY JUST POISON YOUR BODY from a ex long term smoker, who will never go back to smoking, why on earth did you start again after tha length of time.
Avatar f tn My hope would be that you would never smoke again, so that you would avoid the nasty consequences of smoking for another 25 years. What you describe suggests that you may have mild COPD, as suggested by the CT scan changes of emphysema (referred to in the official report, I assume, as Mild) and the FEV1/FVC ratio of 73%.
Avatar f tn Don't risk your baby's health. I work with medically fragile babies to young adults and it sad what a mother can do to their own child. A mother who decides to smoke weed or even eat edibles, or drink alcohol and abuse drugs probably doesn't know the consequences it will cause their baby. If you're brave enough to sacrifice your babies life and put up with his or her disability, then it is your choice. Please consult with your physician for alternatives and advice.
