Avatar f tn It is also a signal that if you do not stop smoking, your lung function will increasingly continue to rapidly deteriorate. That means that smoking cessation is not just the abandonment of a bad habit but a crucial act that will prevent further loss of lung function, reduce the frequency of lung infections, reduce the likelihood of lung (and other) cancers, enhance the quality of your life and extend the length of your life.

Avatar f tn Good job, maybe you'll be able to quit :) I quit 8 months ago after 9 years of smoking, so you can do it :) there's an app called cessation nation that helped me a lot.

Avatar m tn I've been unwell for a very long time, and my PCPs (and some specialists) haven't been able to help me and never really seemed to take me seriously. I first began feeling unwell around 2013, right around the time I began to be exposed (unknowingly) to black-colored mold behind my shower wall (on the drywall). I didn't discover the mold until probably late 2016. There are other factors, such as smoking and smoking cessation, as well as clonazepam and clonazepam cessation.
1671473 tn?1450592437 Within two years after smoking cessation, the percentage of hypothyroid cases attributable to cessation of smoking was 85%. Current smoking was not associated with altered risk for developing overt hypothyroidism (OR: 0.92 (0.57-1.48)). CONCLUSIONS: The risk of having overt autoimmune hypothyroidism diagnosed is more than 6 fold increased the first 2 years after cessation of smoking. Clearly smoking cessation is vital to prevent death and severe disease.
Avatar m tn After I stopped smoking, I experienced slight nausea and lots of fatigue the first week. So it's possible it's part of the withdraw process. But I don't know about the canker sores or the fever.
1262435 tn?1270311859 This diminution in risk occurs relatively soon after cessation of smoking, and increasing intervals since the last cigarette smoked are associated with progressively lower mortality rates from CHD. Similar rapid decreases in risk with smoking cessation are also seen for ischemic stroke. Benefits from quitting are seen in former smokers even after many years of heavy smoking.
Avatar f tn I know Zyban is another smoking cessation aide but that is another name for the anti-depressent Wellbutrin and an anti-depressent alone in bipolar can often worsen mania. Those are the two that are clinically approved and in standard use. Others are in experimental use.
Avatar f tn s not, ask them to recommend how to cut back and quit, or ask them to recommend a smoking cessation method to help you (the patch, the gum, etc)...and see if there are any smoking cessation programs in your state that you can call for information as well.
Avatar m tn Would get the occassional shock when ICD read a high afib as vfib. I finally quit smoking in August. September- felt like crap-tight chest, heart racing, thumping in my neck. Have now experienced 2 different episodes of syncope brought on by vtach. my question- is it possible that the atenolol is causing the syncope? Maybe the dose can be lowered now that I have quit smoking?
Avatar n tn A person in heart failure should be on a cocktail of drugs and usually a pacemaker or ICD is implanted, but even then it won't stop the heart from failing completly. Currently to my knowledge stem cell research is only in the animal testing stages but looks encouraging. As to why her doctor did not order a pacemaker I can only guess he assumed her case was too far gone and the risk of the procedure did not outweigh the benefits.
467579 tn?1289402969 In the meantime, you and other smokers should take advantage of currently available medicines and state-sponsored, smoking cessation programs. The great majority of us attribute smoking to nicotine addiction, not to a “mental defect.” Do consult with your doctor regarding medicine and call your local smoking cessation program. Good luck.
Avatar m tn And, for early detection and peace of mind, you should definitely have a chest X-ray now and, assuming that you will be able to stick with the decision to engage in smoking cessation and never smoke again, it would be prudent for you to have a chest X-ray on an annual basis over the next 3-5 years.
Avatar m tn I have recently been approved by VA for a chantix prescription, and expect to start the cessation program within days. I've been told that a recent medical study indicates that a male of my age, 66, incurs decreased longevity by quitting smoking after 50 years addiction. can someone direct me to such a study, or advise if I've been misled?
Avatar m tn You don't have to monitor your levels every week during the smoking cessation process... I'm sure there's going to be some discomfort, but we've all (those who have quit smoking) gone through discomfort with both the smoking cessation AND being hypo until we got to the correct level of medication.
Avatar n tn my wife is taking bupropion sr 150 mg to quit smoking and wants to know if cold medication can be taken while on this drug.
Avatar m tn wellbutrin is not indicated in the cessation of smoking marijuana, but it does increase your chances of seizure if you drink alcohol while taking it. also, smoking, i think it actually either helps with the cessation of anxiety in anxious peoples or adds anxiety on non anxious people so if you are smoking to chill out (just a guess), you might want to try anti-anxiety meds instead.

Avatar n tn I have tried to quit at least 6 times yet always end up smoking after 1 week even when I was on Chantix. This time I am at day 9 and forgot to take the evening pill 2x already. I think that is a good sign but I only have 3 weeks left of medicine. Can anyone tell me what to expect when the meds are gone? I was also drinking 2-4 red bulls a day and have not drank one since I quit smoking. I now drink one small frappucino each day.
2107732 tn?1335127983 It is not uncommon for a person to develop a productive cough following smoking cessation, as one’s lungs recover and the bronchial tubes are able to clear accumulated “crap” out of the lungs. This can occur just about anytime following smoking cessation and may continue for 6-12 months. That may be what is happening. On the other hand, what you describe may be a sign of infection and may be accompanied by fever, fatigue, malaise and/or loss of appetite.
