Common Questions and Answers about Sleep hygiene

sleep

Avatar f tn Hi, Snoring is common, especially among men and menopausal women. Although it is linked to Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), many people simply snore and are not suffering from OSA. It may arise from one or more problems like low muscle tone in tongue/throat muscles, which can be exacerbated by alcohol/drug use, bulky throat tissue (e.g., large tonsils or large uvula), obstructed nasal airways when the nose is congested due to a cold or allergies, anatomical problem within the airway, obesity etc.
Avatar m tn Medical (sedatives) are given in the temporary initial phase, this is combined with non medical measures like sleep hygiene, relaxation therapy, stimulus control, and sleep restriction which are referred to as cognitive behavioral therapies. As the non medical measures help to restore your sleep rhythm, the sedatives are withdrawn. Discuss these options with your consulting doctor.
Avatar n tn Losing interest in ones hygiene standards can be a sign of depression. Keep a note to see if there are any other changes, like losing interest in a hobby, for example. Do you have any other problems with your body, like stiffness or pain due to arthritis? These types of things can also stop you from wanting to have a regular bath/shower because of problems and the discomfort getting in and out of the bath.

Avatar f tn It may not be a hygiene-only problem. A friend of mine's son had many problems with soiled underwear. It was found nearly a year later that he was having major issues with constipation and his bowels were mostly blocked. The only stool that would pass over the blockage was liquid-like. This cause "leakage" that came without warning or ability to control. After treatment, the problem never returned.
1700899 tn?1307069507 The best bet as discussed above would be good sleep hygiene measures. Follow good sleep hygiene measures like going to bed at the same time, waking up at the same time, avoidance of alcohol, smoking and caffeinated beverages. But, please consult your primary care physician if problem persists to evaluate for sleep disorders. Hope This Helped and Do Keep Us Posted.

798555 tn?1292787551 Trouble sleeping and daytime sleepiness are considered indications of poor sleep hygiene. Some tips on sleep hygiene I have mentioned previously on my first post.
Avatar n tn If he were my son, I would first want him to faithfully observe general principles of good sleep hygiene, which can be found by googling. I say want him to because you can't exactly "make" a 19 year old. But if he sees the need for sleep maybe he'd be willing to try all this as an experiment for say a month or two. Part of that sleep hygiene is getting rid of caffeine, and limiting stimulating activities, particular TV and computer.

Avatar n tn It affects sleep itself, decreasing sleep latency, increasing sleep efficiency, and increasing the total sleep time. Melatonin acts on the melatonin receptors. Other neurotransmitters are neuropeptides like orexin-A and orexin-B which are basically involved in wakefulness. Excess of these peptides can also lead to insomnia. The investigations which will help to diagnose the type and cause for insomnia are Polysomnography, Multiple sleep latency test and Actigraphy .
Avatar m tn The transition into a sleep state is more difficult for some than others; achieving and/or maintaining sleep can be affected by many factors. I know once my doctor was certain my sleep disorders were effectively treated, she encouraged me to work on sleep hygiene (good sleep practices). It took a long time to break bad habits.
