Avatar f tn Physiologically, sleep paralysis is closely related to REM atonia, the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Sleep paralysis occurs either when falling asleep, or when awakening. When it occurs upon falling asleep, the person remains aware while the body shuts down for REM sleep, and it is called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis.

I had the sleep paralysis also where I was trying to move but could not and trying to say, "Help" but the words would not come out. It was frightening. I would often recite the Lord's prayer. My daughter though has also had the paralysis in her sleep, so not sure if it is PSTD associated alone as she did not have the abusive childhood I did.

Avatar f tn t think it has anything to do with that too. Is it normal to be awake while your body is falling asleep, going into sleep paralysis? And to have also experienced this once in my lifetime? Thought I"m only 25 so far, but the moment I felt my arms tingle and get heavy I started moving them around. my legs did get that feeling a bit but definitely not as much as my arms did. I'm going to talk to my doctor about it in the next couple weeks so I will see what he says.
Avatar m tn this would be more indicative of sleep paralysis. While not an uncommon occurrence in people, it is uncommon to have sleep paralysis several times a year or more, so you should mention this to your doctor, especially if you are experiencing other symptoms, like excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, brain fog, etc. Sleep paralysis has been linked to narcolepsy. Avatar f tn Unfortunately, there is no practical way to decipher between normal REM sleep and sleep paralysis. This is because in normal REM sleep you experience the same paralysis as in sleep paralysis; the only difference is your level of consciousness at the time. So there's no way to develop a sensor that an app could use to address this issue. This also may be of interest to you: I have a service dog whose primary task is medical alert.
510038 tn?1489983029 this happened while sitting in a chair, so not sleep paralysis but a similar sensation which left me feeling the same as you....confused and terrified. Talk with your Dr to make sure it is sleep paralysis or something else.... Refresh my memory, have you had surgery?
573569 tn?1278629655 There are other similar conditions that dont involve paralysis and are more experienced as a difficulty to become fully awake, where as sleep paralysis you are unable to move and think your awake, commonly waking up with high anxiety, which makes one feel alert. Sleep paralysis can also give feelings of impending doom. None the less you are not alone, both are fairly common.
Avatar m tn It sounds like it could be sleep paralysis to me. I do that all the time. I thought it was "night terrors." I'm fully aware of everything around me, can hear and everything but can't scream out, can't move, nothing. I learned it was common with narcolepsy. You need to go see your primary care doctor and/or get a referral to a sleep specialist.

Avatar f tn the strength of this command depends on how sure the body is that the mind are sleeping, this depends on how still you lie, if you lie very still the body is almost convinced that the mind is sleeping, and send out a very tiny signal which can easily be ignored by you and result in sleep paralysis with your mind awake, sleep paralysis feels almost like led on top of your body, and can easily be mistaken for someone pushing you against the bed. VERY SCAERY AND UNCOMFTABLE.!!!
